《The Colour Seers》Chapter 9, Nicholas

They were weird dreams alright. There were two people fighting. Hardly. The girl had gorgeous deep blue and purple hair and it flowed in the wind as she said something to the brown haired boy on the ground. I tried to walk closer to them to see what she was saying to him but I couldn't move. The dream faded and changed to where there was a boy, a bit younger than me with blood coming out of a big cut on the side of his hip. There were people in black everywhere and the girl with purple and blue hair fired her guns at them while another girl with brown hair and the other brown haired boy from earlier dragged him outside the building. The boy who was dragging the other was visibly crying and trembling.
When I woke up a concerned Damon looked down on me. "Nick are you ok? You were sweating and tossing and turning all night". I looked up at him taking in how tired he was, I must have kept him up all night. "I'm so sorry. I had such weird dreams last night. They looked so realistic!" I revealed softly. I heard a small gasp and someone murmured something like 'it's finally happening' but I couldn't see anyone that was talking. He sat silently for a minute then talked "Well, if it really bothers you maybe talk to Dr Thender. She'll know all about it hopefully.". I nodded.
Breakfast was quick and light, a bowl of muesli and some yogurt and a quarter of a light green apple. While we sat around the table we talked lowly and ate quickly as the guards were going to come get us any second now. "Guys, remember, be polite and be cooperative at all times. In other words, just do everything they say to do without arguing please." Ashley said quietly as the guards walked in. "Stand up and follow me quickly. Anyone out of line will have a punishment come in quickly and effectively." the guard in front said emotionlessly, like he was oblivious to the fact that he was threatening to hurt children. Everyone nodded and followed him single file out the door. Ashley went first followed by Cameron, Lilliana, Malia, Julia, Damon, then me, Helena, Nathan and Jeremiah protecting us from behind.
The infirmary was a bit of a walk and we crossed into restricted territory. The infirmary and Mr Booshwaters room was there. It was strictly forbidden to enter unless with a guard. I only really come in here yearly for the check ups. This part of the camp was nicer than our part. It had heaps of colours though it didn't match at all. There were blue and yellow striped walls, red couches and brown floors. The roof lights were green and windows had a purply colour. But the infirmary was my favourite. Dr Thender had designed it all so it was full of light blues, pinks and whites.
As we stopped in front of the infirmary the nurse came out and quickly hurried us inside dismissing the guards. The nurse lived in here full time but was rarely seen outside her quarters and the infirmary. As we were escorted in, the doctor was fast to greet us. "Hey guys! How have you all been? I see we have a new person with us! I didn't meet you last year! Wasn't it Alex? Or was it Tasha? I can't remember. Anywho, I'm Dr Amalia Thender but you can call me either Dr Thender or Amalia, whichever you prefer!" she gushed. Helena looked confused but replied to the sweet doctor "I'm Helena, and I just arrived a week ago! Colour first". Dr Thender's eyes widened "Colour first young one. Let's get started. Helena first.".

It was after Helena that I was asked to enter. Highly unusual because she always saw me last. When I sat down Dr Thender was sitting at a huge shiny wooden desk with a blood red rug underneath it. Looking at me intently, the doctor only studied. After what seemed like a long time she talked. "So Nicholas, I see that Ms Ashley, Mr Nathan and Mr Jeremiah have recently been pulling out medical supplies for you, is everything ok?". I shook my head and quickly recounted what had been happening these past few weeks. She nodded quickly and wrote down everything as I spoke.
"Well, it looks like I must have to have a talk with the director then. You are human beings, you shouldn't be treated like any less." she said sternly as she guided me to the patient bed. "Just sit on that for me, yes and open your mouth wide" the doctor instructed. I opened my mouth wide as she checked my mouth and throat. After checking my heartbeat, blood pressure and fever she looked happy. "Looking good Nicholas! Though I'm still going to get the guards to crush some vitamin tablets into your food because you look a little on the pale side". I nodded happily with the lack of diagnosis.
"So anything else, maybe, you think recently, that has been maybe... strange... that's happened?" she asked cautiously. I nodded slowly thinking about my dreams last night. "Well, recently, I mean last night, I had these really strange dreams, they were so real it scared me!" I confessed, happy that I did. She nodded intently. "Can you tell me, maybe, a person or something you saw there?" she asked quietly. I continued "There was a girl, a little bit older than me, she had the most colourful hair I had ever seen! Dark blue and purple! Her and the boy were fighting, it looked so real, but when she beat him she helped him up, like the girl was training him! Then it changed to the same girl firing her gun at the people in black suits while a boy had blood coming out of him on the floor. Another girl with brown hair and the same boy were dragging the bleeding one out. The boy from earlier was crying and really angry.".
Dr Thender nodded intently as she listened to me speak. "She was right!" the doctor gasped after I had finished. "RIght?" I asked. "Nicholas, you are one of the only few colour seers in the world who have true sight!" she remarked, "Incredible!". "True sight as in the old lullaby?" I gaped. She nodded "It's not just a lullaby Nicholas! It's a prophecy. Every century, 5 colour seers are born with the true sight! The special seers a few centuries ago prophesied that in the next few centuries the group of the special seers, if they work together, can take down the evil in the government and can rule it! Make everything normal again. A government spy had heard it and that is why we were all put in camps, to separate us. But then you have the group that hasn't been caught, run by a fierceless ruler, they haven't been stopped or found, she takes in new colour seers, young and old.".

By the end of her speech my mouth was wide open. "There... are colour seers that are not in camps?". She nodded. "I actually have no means to work for the government anymore since the leader of the rebel camp has my children and I can live freely among them but the people in the government don't know that and it's better like that! It's amazing there Nicholas! You never judged and it's like a whole little town! I still work here so every year I can go look for the last special colour seer because the leader has the other three with her!".
Her? More like me? Town? Dr Thender was free? "Doctor, that's amazing!" I gushed. I was glad she was free. She nodded giddily. "Nicholas, I think I found someone! I love him so much! We have been dating for a few months now!". My smile grew, she had been without someone for years now. "That's so good! I'm so happy that you've found someone again!" I laughed out. She nodded "And, Nicholas, I'm with a child!" she squealed. I jumped up and gave her a hug! "That's... WOW!" I was overjoyed! She nodded "I plan to tell him this afternoon when I get let off and can go home in peace." I was over the moon. She had another man and was pregnant! Amalia Thender was like another mum to me and I was so happy that she was.
"Anywho, back to before, Nicholas, you are special. Don't ever doubt that. You have many obstacles ahead of you, some tricky, some that may seem impossible, but remember you are powerful and have us. We love and believe in you.". A tear slid down my cheek as I gave her one last hug and walked out of the room. "Oh and bring Ms Ashley in here please" the doctor called out as I closed the door. "Ash, you're up next" I said once I got in the waiting room. Ash nodded and went inside. I sat next to a grumpy Damon and a red faced Helena. "Wanna talk ab-", "NO!" they both shouted. With a defeated sigh I slumped into my seat.
After continuous doors opening and closing we had to get our yearly vaccinations. We were given the privilege of getting yearly flu shots because the people working at the camps couldn't afford to get sick. I remember a few winters ago when it rained too much and we didn't have glass on the windows and everyone was sneezing then. We got lots of hot food. It was one of the best times ever! As we lined up to get needles I could see the younger ones getting scared. I walked over and put my hand on Malia's shoulder, "Just like every other year Jules, Lia, you've had one before, there is nothing to be afraid of. I will be right next to you the whole time.". The girls nodded as I faced the younger two.
"You guys are going to see very pointy things in the nice lady's hand ok. She won't hurt you and the needle won't hurt you either. I promise, and after, I heard if you don't cry she gives you a... lolly!" I reassured them. Their eyes went wide when I mentioned lollies, since it was something we got maybe once every month if the whole month went without no one having an incident, which was rare since the guards and Mr Booshwater liked to pick fights for no reason. "L-l-lollyyyyyy?" Lilliana asked excitedly, her beautiful little eyes lighting up. I smiled and confirmed the little one's thoughts. She giggled as Cameron looked weirdly at me "Lolly?", I nodded quickly forgetting his parents taught him differently "Candy, the nice lady will give you candy if you don't cry". He smiled "I must not cry" he repeated as if a mantra.
Two by two we were escorted into the vaccination room where Dr Thender and the nurse were preparing the needles. Damon and I decided to go last so we could help the younger ones while they got theirs. First Lilliana and Malia went, the little one holding tightly her sister's arm as if she were her lifeline. Making my way over to Lilliana I gently picked her arms and let her relax into my arms. Soothingly I patted her hair and started to tell her a story about the mythical rainbow which was supposed to hold every colour ever. While I was telling her the story Dr Thender had snuck up and gave Lilliana the shot, the little one not even noticing.
After doing it I put her down, "Well done Lil, here is you lolly, it's called a lollyPOP!" I exclaimed and handed her a plastic stick with a small blue round hard candy stuck to it. "How do I eat it?" her pink little lips pouted. Looking at the doctor for help she mouthed the word suck it out. Turning back to the little angel I replied "You suck it". She nodded and popped it into her mouth skipping back to her sister. After getting everyone through it was officially mine and Damon's turn.
Once I sat down the doctor looked at me "Just sit still and it will be over in a second ok?" I nodded as I felt a small prick in my arm. It felt funny as I could feel the liquid. I laughed inside a bit before I stood up to get off the chair. As soon as I stood up the whole room spun. I stumbled before Damon caught me in his arms. His voice was fuzzy as blackness tinged my sight "Nicholas! Nicholas! What's wrong with him?!" Damon shouted at someone. I heard footsteps as I slowly shut and opened my eyes. "Stay awake Nick, please, for me" Damon's thick voice whispered as I felt people grab me everywhere.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes
