《The Colour Seers》Chapter 5, Nicholas

A bunch of small talk and clanking woke me up. I looked around as a sharp pain shot up my spin. "I don't know what much else we can do for him, he's taken too much trauma to the back recently. We are going to have to get him excused by Booshwater because he is on strict bed rest for the next few days." Ashley furiously whispered to a distressed Jeremiah. Pain shot up again as I turned around to face Nathan plucking something out of my back. Looking at my pained expression, he smiled sheepishly "My bad, sorry, I didn't know you were awake.".
Nodding I turned back to Jeremiah who was in my face. "Can you tell us what happened Nich?" he said worriedly but softly. I wracked my brain for what could have happened in the past day that I could know about that hurt me. Last thing I remember was going to sleep. After I voiced these exact thoughts to the older kids sitting around me, they looked puzzled. "Maybe you could tell me what happened?" I asked quietly looking at the three of them.
After trying to see into my soul Ashley began her story. "Well, we don't know much except Helena wanted to talk to you and after a few minutes she screamed and she had a bloody and bruised face and you were unconscious with glass shards in your back and around your body.". I gasped, had I actually done something to hurt the new girl? As if reading my mind Jeremiah held my hand and rubbed it as if to sooth me "We don't exactly know if you had done anything to her or if she did it to herself but we just have the irking question why she would do it to herself?". Nodding, I layed back down.

I sat gingerly and waited for about 5 -10 minutes as Nathan pulled the glass out of my back. Squirming, I quickly jolted in surprise when I felt a third hand on my back. Damon's face appeared next to me as I calmed down. "You scared me!" I strangled out. Laughing he jumped onto the bed making me bounce with the after effect. "Wellllllll, I brought you..." he whispered off, "A MUFFIN!". Screaming he whipped a crushed chocolate muffin out from under his shirt.
My stomach grumbled as the chocolatey smell wafted up my nose. Unconsciously licking my lips I leaned in towards Damon when pain tore up my spine. I screamed as tears poured down my face. Ashley and Jermiah ran behind me to inspect the damage with Nathan. Gasping, Ash's delicate hands caressed my back. "What is it Ash?" Damon luckily asked for me. Stuttering she let out, "The... the glass is lodged in his spine, it requires proper medical attention, otherwise we could paralyse him.".
I let out a strangled gasp as I absorbed the information. What could have possibly happened that there is glass in my spine?! Just as I was about to talk Damon shoved the chocolate muffin into my mouth. "Eat it" he stammered as I started chewing on the muffin. Multiple flavours overwhelmed my mouth, what was in this muffin? There were things I hadn't tasted in ages, honey, mint, chocolate, syrup, strawberries. "What... is... this?" I asked, trying not to spit out the scrumptious dessert.
Laughing Damon replied, "Welllllll Helena was able to get us into the kitchens and you should have seen the amount of colour emitting from that room! Green, red, blue, yellow, purple! It was spectacular! There was so much food! The strawberries were so red! And delicious!". Pretending to swoon my best friend fanned himself. Laughing I gently stretched my arm out to ruffle his hair. Another thought popped into my head, "When am I going to meet- wait no, re-meet Helena?" I asked curiously. Jeremiah's eyes widened, "Now I guess, Ash go get little Miss Sunshine". I tilted my head to the side. Little Miss Sunshine?

The door opened and a goddess appeared in front of me. The girl's brown eyes stared intensely into mine, her chocolate brown locks pulled up into a ponytail. Her full thick lips were a luscious natural red and her eyelashes full and black. Her sweet voice melted the air "Nicholas!" she gasped, running up to me hugging me squeezing me tightly.

When the mercenary lifestyle grows incompatible with the Kingdom of Evandis, he and his merry band of misfits set off west to seek those with a better proclivity for warfare and with much deeper pockets. At his side: a wandering barbarian who teeters on the edge of savagery, a girl who would have a heart of gold if she didn’t pawn it off to the nearest fence, a wannabe knight who is absolutely overcompensating for something, and the last person in the universe who should be anywhere close to magic. But, as most mercenaries find, the right decisions are quite an expensive luxury, and the wrong ones happen to pay very well. Then again, what are the value of morals to a hungry wolf?
