《The Colour Seers》Chapter 10, Helena

I sat with my head in my hands as we all waited for news on Ryan. Not even I was allowed in. I had one mission, to get him out and to camp safely. For all I know he could be dying on that bed right now! My hand tingled as I looked down at it. On my palm, redness was rising up, someone was trying to contact me. I quickly slipped into the empty office next to the infirmary which was saved specifically for Amalia.
Finding the closest sharp thing, the scissors, I quickly sliced my palm open, my blood flowing up into a circle. "Took you long enough, '' my leader spat out viciously. "Sorry" I whispered, hanging my head low. "Look me in the eye when I talk to you!" she growled. Whipping my head up I stared deep into her brown malicious eyes. She was grinding her perfectly white teeth, "First I find out from Amalia Thender that many medical resources have been pulled out for Ryan WHILE you were there, then I find out that a supply truck has been driven of a hill, and then I find out from a dream, A DREAM, that Ryan had fainted, could possibly be dead while Amalia tries very hard to wake him up while YOU were supposed to make sure he was AWAKE, ALIVE AND BREATHING at ALL times. Yet every time I ask you to do something you fail miserably. I like you Helena but I swear to every damn god that if you fail this mission, I. WILL. PERSONALLY. END. YOU."
I whimpered at the angry blue and purple haired goddess in front of me. Nodding quickly I quickly disconnected the line. I would be so dead if I didn't do something. Just as I was about to leave Amalia's office a small spark appeared before a stack of paper on the doctor's desk went up in flames. Though they weren't natural flames, they were blue and purple. Nyx. I scrambled over towards the desk as the flames went out. Perched on top of the files was a crumpled piece of paper. I immediately recognised my lady's writing upon opening the letter.
A blood enchantment of health
Feed sick at least a teaspoon of blood from spell caster. To activate the spell, chant 'I call upon the old gods and new, heal him where his body must be anew. Take my health and transfer it to the new host. Only once.
Quickly scanning through it I folded it up and stuck it in my pocket before quickly rushing into the nurse's room, ignoring everyone's quick protests. I slipped into the room. Laying in the centre was Ryan, on a long, thin grey blue doctor's bed. I gasped. Ryan was worriedly white, the feeling of death creeping up on me. I rushed to his side. I turned and looked at the obviously shocked nurse. "Missy, you can't be in here" she sneered, trying to shoo me away like a pest.
I tensed up, "No. Lady, you listen here, get your little ass outside this room right this second or I'll chuck you out. You pick" I retorted equally as hard. The nurse glared as she flicked her hair over her shoulder and stalked out of the room. Amalia glared at me "What the hell was that for?" she hissed, "I need her!". I shook my head and laughed a little, "You absolutely do not need THAT. You need me." I retaliated. Looking at me sideways she noticed the paper in my hand and immediately stepped back, flinching in fear. "Blood magic..." she trailed off quietly.

I nodded as I took a quick step towards the ghost-looking boy. Taking not another look I opened my wound and shoved my hand into his mouth, the blood trickling into his mouth. Amalia instinctively tried to remove my hand as I cut off his airways with my bloody hand. "Drink you idiot" I murmured as I started the spell. "I call upon the old gods and the new", my body fell slack, I collapsed, "Heal him where his body must be anew". My voice shook. Darkness swept throughout the room, winds trying to escape, "T-take my health an-" I screamed as a pain pierced my body like a hot metal rod into my stomach. Whispers echoed around the room "finish it" a voice said strongly inside my head, "finish it or you and the boy will die". Nyx. I don't know where I found the strength but I continued.
"And transfer it to t-t-the new hos-t-t-t. Only... once". I gasped as a bright blue and purple light flashed throughout the room causing a blackout throughout the room. Shrieks were heard from outside the room so I think it wasn't only here. Shit. The nurse burst into the room to check on Ryan whose heart rate was going haywire. Amalia rushed over to my side as I shakily tried to stand up. My eyes stung with tears and my vision blurred. The pain seared through me, it was unbearable. Was this what he was going through? How did he not complain?
"H-help" I just managed to say. She nodded as she scooped me up and put me on a brown material armchair. Checking my pulse and breathing she brought me a glass of water. Giving me a worried glance she grimaced "Your vitals seem completely normal, there really are no physical problems with your body, whatever you're feeling must be psychological." I nodded slowly as I sipped the water. The machine flatlined, its ear screeching noise informing everyone in a 10 kilometre radius. There was a loud bang on the door before a blonde boy ran and flung himself onto Ryan's bed. "Ryan! Ryan!", his voice filled with pure sadness and desperation, my heart broke. I couldn't save him. It didn't work. I let out a shaky breath.
Tears continued to pour down my face, faster than I could wipe them. I couldn't save him. He was dead and it was my fault. Nyx was going to have my head, god, I couldn't even run and hide without her finding me. I'll be dead by morning. My sobs became louder and heavier, she was going to kill me. Ashley, who was now in the room, put a comforting arm around me as tears poured down her own face, she must have mistaken my sadness as sadness for Ryan. I continued crying, not bothered that she thought it was for a whole different reason. Ashley gave off a really maternal vibe, comforting to every poor soul in this room.
Like an angel of sorrow, she fluttered around the room offering comfort to each and every person. The darkness wrapped around her like a sheet. Ashley navigated the room as if she had done it a million times before. The intense suffocated the room, only the sounds of heavy breathing and the cries of us all. Even the sounds of sobs came from the nurse. The only source of light was the heart monitor unit. I watched the line continue in its straight course. For minutes I just stared at the device that had sentenced my fate. Like my mind wanted to play tricks on me the line ever so slightly started to crawl up sending small waves.

Once the numbers started to go up and the waves became bigger, I stared in shock. "Is... anyone else seeing this?". I was gobsmacked. How was this possible? He has been dead for 5 minutes straight. It was quite rare for someone to revive after 3 minutes if dead clinically. Amalia quickly ran to Ryan's side as Aiden scrambled off the bed making way for the now panicked doctor and nurse. The lights flickered suddenly, turning back on. Sighs rang throughout the room as the nurse and doctor continued their work. They must have had a backup generator for the heart monitor, those were really rare to come by these days.
"I need a ventilator now! Last cupboard on the right, Jeremiah please." Amalia rushed quickly propping Ryan up. Even scrambled out of the way to let past a tear-stricken Jeremiah. It must have been hard for him because from what I had heard from Ash. She said that Jeremiah and Ryan had a very close father-son relationship, even though Jeremiah was only 8 years older then him. I heard heavy footsteps approach the infirmary as Ryan was hooked onto the ventilator. Ashley and Nathan looked up worried at the same time, also hearing them. Sensing trouble they ran outside to try to calm the situation.
I followed them quietly, knowing they would immediately send me back. Limping, I made my way around the corner, carefully staying in the shadows of the corners. I heard the camp director's annoying voice. Buttocks? Bumwater? Can't remember. "Where is he! I know he was the one who caused this black out! That little rat is always out to get us! Let us through! He must be punished!". Ashley was quick to intervene with the director's little monologue, "But sir, it wasn't him. I promise. He could never have done it. It-it-it was me!". I stifled a gasp, Nathan on the other hand did not hold back. "Lies Ashley. Sir, we don't know who did it! We promise!" he begged but I heard Ashley's small screams as they took her in.
I may only be here to get Ryan in and out safely, but Ashley has only ever been nice and kind to me. I couldn't let her take the blame and get hurt for something I did. I knew the punishments at the camps were severe, only very very few actually coming from the camps. Once you went in you did not come out unless someone on the outside tried really hard. We had a spy in here for years, a guard, shot recently when he was contacting a failsafe person in the camp. That's when Nyx said enough was enough and sent me in.
I dragged myself around the corner staring at the director in the eye. "It was me," I said firmly. The director smirked "Not very disciplined kids, yes CS199? You're the new one aren't you? The big CS1000. I read your file, you were found on the outskirts of the town whispering into peoples ears about all the majestic colours you could see, scaring each and every one of them. How could a girl so puny and small do something so smart and complicated?". The guards around him snickered and sent a taunting sneer my way, as if daring me to reply. "Well you big bum, just cause I'm a girl doesn't make me incapable of anything less than you and your incompetent airhead goons. I can do whatever I want and you idiots can never stop me" I fought back.
The guards looked at me shell shocked with my response. The director looked like he was suffocating, his face an ugly shade of purple-red and his body shaking. "YOU DISRESPECTFUL INSOLENT LITTLE GIRL. I GAVE YOU SHELTER AND FOOD, WELL MORE THAN WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DESERVE-" I cut him off "Blah blah blah. Whip me I dare you" I sneered, spitting on the ground in front of them. I was yanked backwards, screaming when my hair was pulled harshly. Nathan ran over immediately tackling the guard as Ashley brought me into the safety of her arms.
Loud footsteps were heard around the corner as a red eyed Jeremiah came around. "What is the meaning of this?" he yelled, sending a disapproving look at Nathan, who was trying to stop the blood flow from his nose. "They were attacking Helena! You just wanted me to sit around while she screamed in pain!" he yelled back, pushing Jeremiah in the chest. Jeremiah pushed back, "And last time I checked, was in charge!". "CS323 and CS433, stop yelling at once or all 3 of you can get punished!" Booshwater injected into the conversation. In sync both boys froze and fell quickly and quietly back into place.
"CS1000, you are coming with me!"

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse. Born in an arcology, she was assigned a job in the megacorporation that raised her almost as soon as she could work. Despite the stability of her corporate life, she wanted something more. A chance to claw her way up the rigid social and financial ladder to make something of herself. A chance that wouldn’t come naturally to someone as familiar with dark alleyways and the glint of steel as she was with office work and corporate niceties.Book One is up on Kindle Unlimited as of 7/6/22 - https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B0B2X3L8H5

A Prose of Years
For decades, spiritualist Evert Kallstrom and his team have joined in humanity’s millennia-long fight against the beasts. Wielding their weapons and their ki, they fought and killed these great threats to civilization. And yet, despite their efforts, humanity was losing traction in the war. In the last fifty years alone, more cities had been overrun than in all of known history. While most thought the great beasts natural, a few knew the terrible truth. They were the product of a dark lord, who desired neither fame nor wealth nor power. Instead, his sole purpose was the genocide of humanity. While their peers dithered, a small faction of the strongest mankind had to offer—including Evert Kallstrom and his team—set out towards the Deadlands to find and confront this dark lord. After weeks of travel, twenty-one spiritualists found themselves approaching an ancient fortress wherein rested a being known only as the Eastern Guardian. All they found was death. But death has other plans for Evert. Evert bolts awake in his 16 year old body near his hometown, decades in the past. He is confused, poor and weak. But with grit, sweat, and years of experience, he won't let the future repeat itself. That level of strength won't be enough by itself (it wasn’t last time) and victory is hardly assured (he’ll need to reach farther and higher than he ever did), but Evert refuses to squander a second chance. [Other tags: First Person POV, Hard Magic, Faulty Memory] Volume 1 is complete and has been fully released. My current intention is not to write any sequel volumes. That said, I have also released appendices (SPOILERS) that cover the worldbuilding and future story-that-never-was. Comments suggesting fixes for grammar, misspellings, etc. appreciated. Note: If you came here from Candlelit Lives, these stories have nothing in common.
