《The Younger Agent - Natasha Romanoff x OC》Chapter 95 - The Metal Box

The roads that Natasha was driving through to reach the other side of the mountain range were incredibly twisty and turny, and Eleanor also noticed that they were rather thin. Not to mention the fact that there was no barrier. It wasn't as though she didn't trust Nat's driving, she was even driving slower than usual due to the wet roads, it just made Eleanor feel uneasy as she looked out of the car window and saw that they could easily just plummet to their deaths. Call it instinct mixed with general exhaustion.

Nat seemed to notice the discomfort of the younger woman beside her, "You good?". Eleanor nodded with a small grimace as Nat rounded another one of the sharp bends, "Mhm", she felt her entire body freeze until they were on a straight bit of road again, but felt like letting out a groan when she saw another series of turns ahead. A lot of tire tracks also painted the roads, leaving Eleanor confused at how the locals may speed down as if they are in some sort of race.

"I know, these roads suck", Nat agreed and gave Eleanor's hand a swift squeeze, though she had to quickly yank her hand back to place back on the wheel as the turn she was about to take was a lot tighter than it looked, both women making a wincing sound as Nat had to quickly slow down, getting way too close to the edge of the road than she would have liked to. "My bad", she shrugged it off and continued driving, meanwhile Eleanor looked at her as though she was crazy.

Thankfully, those roads soon came to an end and they were back on regular terrain, a nice wide road under the wheels, the mountain getting further and further away as they neared their destination. The car was filled with nice chatter, with Eleanor suggesting various ways in which they might be able to make the small home nice and cosy with decorations, and Nat adding in her thoughts too.

Just as Nat was going to tell her wife that putting a fire pit in the middle of it would in fact burn the place down and not give it a 'nice ambience', the words that the reporter was saying on the radio caught their attention. Unlike Natasha, Eleanor couldn't speak Norwegian, but she could make out the words "Sokovia Accords", "Avengers", and "Steve Rogers, Natasha og Eleanor Romanoff". The mood in the car immediately died down as Natasha pulled the car to a stop.

Eleanor watched as she slumped back into her seat and took a final sip of her coffee. Natasha said nothing as she looked right past Eleanor and out the passenger side window. The younger woman found herself frowning slightly, it was almost as though she had turned invisible in Nat's eyes, but she followed her wife's gaze and found herself staring at a small metal caravan/motorhome. They had arrived. She had been so caught up in her conversation with Nat that she hadn't even noticed that they were getting close.

However, Eleanor's attention was solely on Nat whose mood had depleted exponentially since hearing the reporter on the radio. "Nat, honey. Are you okay?". Her head slowly turned to look at Eleanor and she planted a small smile on her face, "I'm okay", she nodded softly, though Eleanor could see right through it.

"I know you're not, you looked like you had seen a ghost just now, what's wrong?". She was right, Nat suddenly did not feel okay, but she didn't want to feel like a burden knowing that Eleanor had been anxious about everything too, so just pursed her lips and looked down at her lap, shaking her head slightly to try and deter the conversation from being on her any longer. Though Natasha's reaction to the question only made Eleanor's concern rise.

But it wasn't like she could do much. When Nat didn't want to talk pushing her would only make it worse. So, she took a firm grip on Nat's hand and interlaced their fingers, "You're not weak, okay? It's all very overwhelming it's okay to not be okay, I love you so much, you can talk to me whenever you need, yeah? There's no pressure".

There was silence in the car again before Nat squeezed her hand and whispered "I love you too". Eleanor had thought that that was all that she would get from Nat, so went to let go of her hand to undo her seatbelt, but when Natasha's grip increased and she looked up again she knew better than to continue her actions and so settled back into her seat again.

"It's stupid. I was just... when we were talking again as normal, with no real mentions of being on the run I- I guess I just kind of let myself forget about it. It just seemed like we were going on one of our holidays again with all of our fun conversations with you saying stupid things to make me laugh", she gave a chuckle which made Eleanor shake her head as her lips scrunched together in amusement. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that as always you made me feel safe, and when that came on the radio the gravity of the situation hit me like a truck again".

Eleanor nodded in understanding and tried to shuffle closer in her seat though in the tiny car it was hard to, though Nat smiled at the gesture anyway. "First of all that isn't stupid, it's very understandable. Like I said this is a very overwhelming situation and we are going to have a lot of ups and downs in a short space of time, it's natural", she held eye contact with her to let Nat know that she was being completely serious, and she felt Natasha's body become less tense, so Eleanor smiled, "Thank you for opening up to me".

"Thank you for making me feel safe enough to, like you always do", Nat leaned forward to give her an Eskimo kiss which caused a few giggles to erupt from Eleanor's chest and she planted a quick kiss on Nat's lips before looking outside again. It was very small, but it was what was going to keep them away from danger, so Eleanor smiled and turned to face Nat again, "Shall we go?". Nat nodded and found herself grinning at Eleanor's excitement. Even after all these years she still found it amazing how she could make her feel better by even a single second of eye contact. She didn't know what she would do if she had to do this alone.

Whilst Eleanor unbuckled her seatbelt, Natasha took her coat off which caused another look of 'are you crazy' from her wife, not understanding the logic of taking off your coat to go outside, but she just left Nat to it. When they got out of the car immediately the two drew their guns, not quite trusting that there is no one around who had managed to track them. From opposite sides of the car, the two women made eye contact over it and Nat gave a short gesture with her head before moving around to Eleanor's side and walking forward, taking the lead.

Eleanor promptly followed whilst looking left and right, trying to spot any sudden movements. She held her gun tightly in front of her with both hands whilst walking at a slightly more sideways angle than normal, feet firmly planted with one foot in front of the other in order to ground herself if any conflict took her off guard. As she moved across the dry field that barely had any grass anymore, she also took notice of how quiet and calm it all seemed whilst trying to listen out for other sounds.

There were a few pieces of litter around, but not enough to suggest that it was a popular spot. Perhaps a few people who do long hikes occasionally pass through the area, but the lack of track marks and how weathered the litter looked made Eleanor draw the conclusion that it was indeed a quiet location like Mason had told them.

With the speed that they were marching across the field, the pair soon reached the door, and Natasha swiftly pulled it open. It looked nice and cosy on the inside, though there wasn't much time to take it all in as the two looked at each other and gave small nods before splitting off. Natasha went to the left and Eleanor veered over to the right. From the power of elimination, Eleanor guessed that Natasha had gone towards the bedroom, judging from the fact that all that she could see was the kitchen and living room.

She moved forward to check under furniture, making sure that there was no one hiding under anything ready to pounce at a moment's notice, but there didn't seem to be anybody there. She gave a few pieces of furniture a few kicks for good measure. If anyone was hiding then the sound of her kicking something near them would make them react enough that she would be able to hear them considering how silent the place was. But nothing came up.

Though she did start hearing Natasha's voice along with a male one, so clearly she had found Mason in the bedroom. If it was someone that she didn't know then instead of quiet voices Eleanor was sure that she would be hearing gunshots. "You good in there?", Eleanor shouted through and took a few steps towards the bedroom, seeing that Natasha was walking out with a small smirk on her face.

"Yeah, someone had decided to take a nap on our bed", she shrugged and moved forward into the kitchen. Though the word 'bed' had set something else off within Eleanor as she rushed past her wife to reach the bedroom, practically shoving past Mason who had just reached the doorway. "It's nice to finally meet you too", he stated whilst massaging his shoulder and continuing to follow Nat out into the main area.

"Oh right, yeah nice to meet you!", she again half-shouted before flopping down onto the soft double bed. It had been too many nights of napping in planes and cars. A bed seemed like an absolute godsend.

As she began stretching out and cracking all the bones that needed to be cracked due to being stuck in cramped spaces for days on end, she heard Natasha and Mason in the background talking about all the fake identities he had managed to wrack up for them. Though she couldn't find it in herself to get up quite yet, but when she heard Nat exclaim "Fanny Longbottom? What are you, twelve?", the younger woman chuckled and slowly got up to make her way through to the kitchen, slowly plodding along as Mason started explaining about generators and septic tanks.

Though she came to a standstill a few steps back from the kitchen entryway when she heard Mason say the words "Are you okay?", with genuine concern coating his words. Eleanor really didn't want to eavesdrop but even in the bedroom she was able to hear them, it really was a small caravan, so she took a few steps back and stood waiting for the conversation to be over. Eleanor knew that it was likely that Nat wouldn't open up to him, but if there was a small chance of that happening then Eleanor didn't want to be the one who accidentally interrupted that.

"Why wouldn't I be?", Nat asked in her neutral tone, not showing many emotions, but anyone who knew Natasha would know that her words are a cause for concern. "I hear things. You know, something about the Avengers getting divorced". At his words, Eleanor swallowed harshly about the reminder again.

"Ugh. It's fine. We're actually better on our own", Nat sounded confident in her words, but she was good at making people believe that she was okay when she wasn't. It's her way of surviving dating back to the beginning of her life. "Are you sure?".

"Yeah, I got El".

"Okay, but you can talk to me, you know? That's the way the whole friends' thing works", Mason tried to push again, but at this point, it was clear that Natasha was not budging. "I know, I have friends", she spoke again but more quietly this time. "People who call me don't have friends". Ouch. It was harsh but true. The only reason that they called him is because the whole world was out to get them and they would be arrested on sight. Plus most of their friends were in prison.

"And I don't pay you to worry", Natasha deflected. It was clear that the conversation was now over, so Eleanor drew in a deep breath and made her way out, walking slowly so as to not startle anyone seeing as how the tensions were so high. Mason was walking towards the door when Eleanor entered the room, and Nat turned to face her with an unsure look. The younger woman gave her a sympathetic smile, one which Nat mirrored showing that she knew that she had heard and that it was okay.

With her arms crossed Nat made her way towards the door whilst Mason began to walk away from the caravan, and Eleanor followed her, placing an arm around her waist. Natasha leaned into Eleanor's side and smiled softly before noticing a box filled with letters and other miscellaneous items on the floor by the door. "What's this junk?", she tapped the box with her feet.

"Oh, just some mail and personals from the Budapest safe house", Mason turned around with his hands in his pockets. "Budapest?", Nat replied but pronounced it differently from how the two English people in her presence say it. Eleanor chuckled at 'Budapesht', as they had this conversation a few times in the past.

"Yeah. Budapest", he nodded back. Nat squinted her eyes slightly, "No, it's 'Budapesht'".

"Budapest", Eleanor and Mason spoke simultaneously, as Nat started repeating her way of saying it. Even though Eleanor knew that Natasha was right, she still like to annoy her by arguing back whenever any pronunciation debates came up. "Whatever, I knew you weren't going back there so I've got someone else in the flat now".

"Sorry you went through all the trouble, I would've told you to chuck it", Nat looked down at it again before looking back outside at Mason who had turned to walk off again. "Well, if you don't want it throw it in the rubbish", he looked back with a smile, and Eleanor gave him a little wave.

Natasha closed the door and immediately turned into Eleanor's hold, latching herself onto her tightly. Eleanor gently tubbed circles onto her back and held her just as tightly for a few minutes before pulling away, "Let's get a drink then unpack, yeah?", she suggested with a smile knowing that unpacking would be a good distraction.

Nat hummed in agreement, "Okay, you make the coffees and I'll bring the car over". Eleanor smiled and walked over to the kitchen but not before shouting "Be careful!", out to her wife, still wary of the fact that they may have been tracked over there. Though deep down Eleanor knew that it would be okay, and as she looked around the small place that they would now call home, she let out a breath that she didn't know she had been holding.

"This isn't so bad".
