《The Younger Agent - Natasha Romanoff x OC》Chapter 84 - Troubles In Vienna

The two entered the UN building after being deafened by the huge crowds of people and reporters outside. Reporters always make them slightly nervous. The way that they shout statements and questions at them as they are just trying to get from A to B is intimidating. Especially if they say things that are false, as they can't correct them, which takes a lot of willpower. If they hear false information being yelled, they just have to tell the staff who deal with Avengers press and they sort it out. It's easy for the media to put words in your mouth and twist statements, so silent treatment is the best option.

Once inside, however, it was quite nice. Eleanor thought so anyway, she loved modern architecture, and the building was very modern. Nat had begun immediately searching for a place that would sell coffees, per Eleanor's request on the jet when she had nearly died at the hands of her wife's phone. But before she could really get her bearings and look around, they were recognised, and a member of staff directed them to one of the main areas of the building where the official business of the day would start.

Eleanor went to open her mouth to complain, but Natasha read her mind and interjected before she could so much as say one syllable. "I know, I know, we'll get your coffee later", she was disappointed having wanted to buy something that would cheer Eleanor up. But alas, the United Nations had different plans that were not overly appreciated. Eleanor tilted her head and tugged her lips down, acting to be in deep thought about the situation as they headed over to where they had been told to, and made a clicking sound with her tongue on the roof of her mouth, "Yeah, okay, but if I fall asleep during the main 'show', that's on you".

"How is that on me?!", Nat exclaimed as they reached their destination and continued walking forward, not really knowing where to go at that point in time. Eleanor shrugged and elbowed Nat's ribs gently, "Just is".

"Excuse me Mrs and Mrs Romanoff?", the voice of a member of staff sounded out before Nat could get a rebuttal in to defend her name. "Yes?", Nat answered as Eleanor made a small humming sound in response as she turned to look at the woman.

The staff member gave them a friendly smile which made Eleanor feel slightly better now that they were in a room full of important societal figures, "These need your signatures". She passed the clipboard over to Natasha first who signed it whilst Eleanor looked over to see what it was, not particularly wanting to sign over the parental rights to her firstborn child accidentally. She was glad to see that it was just a consent waiver, so signed it when Nat passed over the clipboard and then handed it back to the member of staff. "Thank you", Eleanor nodded.

At hearing a man's voice directly next to them, Eleanor practically jumped out of her skin, and Nat turned around smoothly. She had to hold back a smirk at Eleanor's reaction and wrapped an arm around her waist as she knew that she would likely be trying to internally regain control of her regular heartbeat. "I suppose neither of us is used to the spotlight". T'Challa, Prince of Wakanda.

"Oh, well it's not always so flattering", Nat gave a half-hearted smirk as she guided the two of them towards him. Eleanor followed along, though it wasn't like she had much of a choice, Nat's grip turned into iron when they approached the Prince, knowing that Eleanor would probably try and find an excuse to escape instead of talking to an authority figure.

"You seem to be doing alright so far. Considering your last trip to Capitol Hill", he looked between both women, Nat smiled ever so slightly, and Eleanor pursed her lips. Yeah, this crowd probably didn't have high expectations of them in legal situations. "I wouldn't think you'd be particularly comfortable in this company".

Eleanor shook her head lightly, "I am most definitely, definitely not". Natasha cleared her throat and looked at Eleanor then back to T'Challa, "What she means to say is we'll be fine", she lied with a smile. Eleanor nodded whilst looking up at the ceiling and mouthed 'right', probably not best to reveal how much they did not want to be there considering the importance.

But T'Challa just gave a small chuckle, clearly seeing that it was Eleanor who was telling the truth on behalf of the two of them, "Well, what she said makes me glad you're both here". Eleanor's face snapped back down from looking at the ceiling to look at the man in front, having not expected that. "Why? You don't approve of all this?", Natasha queried with a small smile.

"The Accords, yes. The politics? Not really. Two people in a room can get more done than a hundred".

"Unless you want to do a three-person tap dancing routine", Eleanor dipped her head and raised her eyebrows briefly, before hearing the voice of another man coming up behind them and standing beside her and Nat. King T'Chaka laughed at the joke and patted her shoulder, "Or if you want to move a piano". The two men greeted each other before the King of Wakanda turned back to the two women, "Mrs and Mrs Romanoff", he nodded.

"King T'Chaka", both said simultaneously. In any other situation, Eleanor would have yelled 'Jinx!' and forced Nat to buy her a soda. "Please, allow me to apologise for what happened in Nigeria", Natasha continued as Eleanor nodded along, suddenly feeling like her throat had closed up. King T'Chaka was one of many to speak out about the way that the Avengers were functioning when it was uncovered that Wakandans had died in the building explosion.

"We are working tirelessly to make sure that nothing like that ever happens again", Eleanor managed to speak without faltering like she had thought she was going to do. "Thank you", the King looked between them, "Starting with the Accords, yes?", he gave a light smile when both women spoke words of agreement. "Well, thank you for agreeing to all of this. I'm sorry to hear that Captain Rogers will not be joining us today".

"Yes, so are we", Nat gave a tight-lipped smile as her frame tensed, a reminder that the team was no longer really a team.

The conversation was interrupted by a man speaking over the PA, which Eleanor was grateful for. The King and Prince of Wakanda seemed delightful, but with everything that was going on, she just wanted to get this over and done with and go to a home that didn't feel much like home anymore but was all that they had. "If everyone could please be seated. This assembly is now in session".

"That is the future calling", T'Challa looked around the group, "Such a pleasure", he focused on Nat and Eleanor who nodded and smiled before walking away to their seats. Eleanor let out a breath she didn't know that she was holding, which prompted Nat to make sure that she was okay when they took their seats. "Yeah, I'm all good", she smiled and rested a hand on Nat's that was resting on the table in front of them, "What about you?".

Nat bit her lip whilst in thought before putting a smile on her face that Eleanor could see right through, "Yeah I'm good too". The younger woman knew better than to pressure her to open up in the middle of a United Nations meeting, so just squeezed her hand before their attention turned to what was happening at the front as the King made his appearance again.

"When stolen Wakandan vibranium was used to make a terrible weapon, we in Wakanda were forced to question our legacy. Those men and women killed in Nigeria were part of a goodwill mission from a country too long in the shadows. We will not however let misfortune drive us back. We will fight to improve the world we wish to join. I am grateful to the Avengers for supporting this initiative. Wakanda is proud to extend its hand in peace...".

Both women were listening intently to T'Chaka's words, but heads snapped to face T'Challa when he interrupted the conference by running up onto the main stage and yelling "Everybody get down!". Panic immediately swept through the room as people mumbled with uncertainty as they hurried to get under their tables. Nat's eyes widened as Eleanor's eyebrows shot up, and instinct took over them. Eleanor dragged Nat's arm to the floor as she crouched to take cover, and Natasha pushed her into a lower crouching position by pressing her front to Eleanor's back to shield her with her own body.

The sound of the explosion was deafeningly painful, and when the glass shattered and flew over to the people under the tables, Nat's grip increased as she pushed herself further into Eleanor. Though the younger woman appreciated it, she was utterly terrified of Nat getting hurt herself, but with the titanium grip that her wife had there was no way on Earth she would be able to move her to get her further under the desks as well.

A few coughs were let out whilst the smoke was settling as the aftermath of the explosion began, and Eleanor managed to wriggle her way out of Nat's grip to turn around and see if she was alright. She cupped Nat's face with both hands and searched her eyes intently, "Are you okay?". Nat nodded and pressed a shaky kiss on Eleanor's forehead, "I'm okay".

Eleanor sighed and brought her in for a hug, "Don't ever use yourself as a human shield again, please", she pleaded as she buried her face into the crook of Nat's neck, who promptly put a hand on the back of her head to bring the younger woman in closer. "No promises, детка", she whispered causing Eleanor to shake her head but with a small smile on her face.

When everyone else around them began to stand in order to make their way out of the building, the two women followed suit with their arms linked and tried to regain their bearings. As they looked around with ringing ears and sore eyes, they spotted T'Challa cradling the deceased body of his father. Eleanor's heart broke for him, the action being an all too familiar one. Though there wasn't much time to dwell, as moments later the emergency services were evacuating them out of the room, and to the safety of the outside world.

With arms still linked, the two women followed the crowd outside, taking note of the damage done on every floor. Eleanor couldn't believe her eyes as she looked around and saw the masses of destruction done to the building, thinking of how many casualties there would be. She looked back over to Natasha's side profile for comfort, who had a determined look on her face as she practically marched out of the building, wanting to get the both of them out before the building collapsed on them which was a likely possibility.

By the time they had gotten outside, there were already masses of tents to treat injuries and house the soldiers and guards that were now on site. It was surreal looking around and seeing people standing guard with a range of different heavy-duty guns. The two weren't phased by guns, having used them a lot in their line of work, but seeing the multitude of guards standing around in case of another attack wasn't nice to witness. When one who looked to have some authority walked past, Eleanor stopped him to try and find out what was going on, an attack on the UN was not something to take lightly. "Hey, uh what exactly is going on here?".

He looked like he wasn't going to give up any information, but at seeing two Avengers standing in front of him, he faltered slightly and sighed, "A bomb planted by James Barnes outside of the building". Both women's eyes widened, this had been the first Winter Soldier incident in two years, and with HYDRA gone they were confused about who would have ordered it. "There's a task force being set up to bring him in, until then we just need everyone to try and stay calm", he nodded before walking off to his initial destination.

After looking at each other with solemn faces, both scanned the area to find a place to stay until it was all over, as most places had been taken, but after a few minutes of aimlessly wandering around, they saw a bench next to T'Challa's and decided to take it. They cautiously walked towards him so as to not startle him in his vulnerable state, and sat down. Natasha was nearest to T'Challa and Eleanor was squished into her side as Nat had dragged her into her when taking a seat. "I'm very sorry", Nat spoke to the shellshocked man.

He looked at them with blank eyes as he played with his father's ring, the two women weren't too sure what to do. Eleanor offered the smallest of smiles as reassurance that everything was going to be okay, though she wasn't sure that she could keep telling herself and others that. Recently, everything had been going to shit.

"In my culture, death is not the end. It's more of a stepping-off point. You reach out with both hands and Bast and Sekhmet, they lead you into the green veldt where you can run forever".

"That sounds very peaceful", Nat continued, and Eleanor stayed silent whilst she pondered his words. It did sound very calming and probably brought comfort to a lot of people who believed so. "My father thought so", T'Challa placed the ring on his finger, "I am not my father".

Eleanor frowned slightly, his words seemed more significant than a differing of beliefs. "T'Challa... the task force will decide who brings in Barnes", she warned, sensing that he wasn't revealing his entire thoughts on the situation. "Don't bother Mrs Romanoff, he stood and clenched the fist with the new ring on, "I'll kill him myself". Natasha looked to be at a loss for words, and Eleanor gulped slightly as they watched him walk away. Revenge was never a good thing, it usually ended with more people getting hurt, usually the ones seeking revenge as they can't think straight whilst angry.

"I have a bad feeling about all of this", Eleanor muttered whilst staring at the back of the now King of Wakanda. Natasha absentmindedly nodded as she looked ahead in thought before nudging her shoulder against her wife's and giving a half smirk, "It's all gonna be okay", she spoke in a quiet yet authoritative tone, and Eleanor puffed her cheeks out as she let out a puff of air, "Yeah, yeah it will be".

Natasha smiled and was about to say something else, but was interrupted by her phone ringing. "Who is it?", Eleanor queried as Nat went to answer.

"It's Steve".
