《The Younger Agent - Natasha Romanoff x OC》Chapter 71 - Out Of Reach

Eleanor inhaled deeply to ready herself for the impact of the train and hopped up and down on the balls of her feet a few times to try and get some momentum. The roof of the truck did not have a lot of room to run to make that jump securely, so she needed all of the momentum that she could get.

Time was running out. Eleanor could spot the track diverging from the road very soon, meaning she would miss her chance "It's now or never", she mumbled before sprinting forward a few steps and pushing hard with one foot to send herself flying towards the train.

Whilst hurtling through the air, she pulled her limbs into her body to form a ball so that there was less chance of an arm being chopped off. She thanked her lucky stars when she felt the impact of flying through a window, and not hitting a metal door and bouncing onto the tracks for an untimely death, Natasha would have killed her if she died.

The thanks soon turned into holding in a groan of pain when she landed on the floor and felt the glass cut into her thighs when her limbs unravelled themselves from her body at the tumble into some chairs. There were some gasps and shouts around her when the ringing in her ears died down, the passengers of the train clearly not happy to see yet another person barrelling through the vehicle.

"Sorry! My bad", she half-yelled as she shakily stood and brushed the glass off of her legs and arms that were protruding from her skin. She ran forwards through a few carriages to reach the one that Steve was in, but as soon as she opened the door to Steve's carriage, she saw him flying towards her from a blast impact.

Her eyes widened and her body reacted on auto-pilot. Looking up she saw that there were some metal bars on the ceiling for luggage, so she jumped up and grabbed on, lifting her legs up to avoid being hit by Steve completely.

It worked, but when more blasts were shot, the train shook and she landed on the floor directly on her back between Steve and Ultron. She jumped up and smiled at the bot who was looking at her as though she was the most annoying thing on the planet. She couldn't damage him, but she sure was pestering him.

"Hi!", Eleanor smiled and waved, confusing both Steve and Ultron. Distraction complete. With the two looking at her like she was crazy, she ran to a pole that went from floor to ceiling, and swung herself around, booting the side of Ultron's face. Surprisingly, he went flying into the wall of the train and roared in anger.

Eleanor's eyes widened at the brief victory as Ultron flew back up again and Steve swung his shield at him. The victory was very short-lived, Ultron managed to blast Steve in the side, rendering the shield useless. He got thrown to the back of the train carriage, allowing Ultron to train his attention back on Eleanor.

"Hey, I don't have a big vibranium frisbee to hand so maybe we can make a deal?", Eleanor smiled with sarcasm lacing her words, further angering the already livid bot. Mission accomplished.

He groaned and flew forward to pick her up by under one of her arms with his hand, and tossed her like a ragdoll into the ceiling above Steve. They both grunted when she landed on top of him and bounced onto the floor. "Ow", she rubbed her head and sat up next to Steve. Looking around she could see that their half of the carriage had been cleared of terrified passengers, which was one less thing for them to worry about.

"I'm going in. Cap, El, can you keep him occupied?", Nat spoke through comms, clearly having caught up to the now unoccupied truck with the Cradle in it.

"What do you think we've been doing?", Steve panted as he aggressively stood up and held out his hand to help Eleanor up as well.

"Thanks", she breathed out as she tried to hold back the black spots from completely taking over her vision. There had been far too many blows to the head for an average human to take. Nonetheless, she tried to shake it off and jumped into a defensive stance at seeing Ultron approach, though it felt futile as he could just toss her around again.

But that was their job, a distraction.

"Okay, package is airborne", Clint spoke into comms. Did he mean that the jet now had the Cradle, or that the Cradle was in flight? "I have a clean shot".

"Negative. I am still in the truck", Nat replied. Eleanor nodded, so the truck was in flight. Question answered. When she dodged another blast from Ultron, what Nat had said finally kicked in.

"You're in a flying truck?!", Eleanor yelled as she jumped hands first onto the floor over a row of seats to yet again avoid the blasts.

"What the hell are you-".

"Just be ready, I'm sending the package to you", Nat interrupted Clint.

Ultron turned his attention back to Steve, and Eleanor was glad to be able to take a breather from jumping around the train trying to avoid blasts like an insane game of whack-a-mole. She watched rather helplessly as Steve took hit after hit from Ultron's punches.

She had to do something. "Time for another piggyback", she mumbled and made a move to run forward. Though before she could even move one step a blue flashing light sped past her and directly into Ultron, sending them both flying across the carriage.

Looking over to Steve she could see that Pietro Maximoff was standing in front of him defensively. The corners of her lips tugged up slightly at the help, but her face dropped when she saw red tendrils dragging the luggage bars down to form an 'X' to stop Ultron from reaching the two. Wanda was there too.

Eleanor looked over to see her standing in her half of the carriage, the 'seeing your nightmares' situation didn't cross her mind too much at that moment, she was just glad for the help.

Wanda looked over to her slightly wide-eyed at seeing that she had also trapped Eleanor in the part of the carriage with Ultron in. Though she seemed to calm ever so slightly when Eleanor gave her a nod of thanks, clearly not holding a grudge for accidentally trapping her in next to a killer robot.

"Please, don't do this", Ultron turned to Wanda.

"What choice do we have?". Ultron's reply to Wanda was turning around to blast through the metal, forcing Steve and Pietro to leap out of the way. Luckily, the two managed to avoid it, but unluckily, Ultron smashed his way out of the side of the train and flew away.

"I lost him!", Steve yelled whilst jumping over some seats to reach the front, "He's headed your way!".

Eleanor felt her heart drop as she rushed forward to stand next to Steve. Nat was still in the truck.

Another thing to worry about appeared as the pair looked down, the train driver was injured and unconscious at the control panel, and the tracks were coming to an end soon. "Does anyone know how to drive a train?", Eleanor yelled as she tried to examine the board of switches and buttons.

She could pilot a jet but couldn't seem to figure out these controls.

"Nat!", Eleanor heard Clint yell, immediately her focus moved from the impending death of a train crash to what had happened to her wife.

She took a step back from the board, about to yell something into comms, something along the lines of 'What the hell is going on?', but the train proceed to crash onto the street and smashed its way through a street market with no sign of slowing down.

The impact caused her to lose her balance and she had to grab ahold of a pole nearby to stop from somersaulting down the train aisle.

"Cap, you see Nat?", Clint's panicked voice came through again, and Eleanor once again felt her heart drop to her stomach.

"If you have the package, get it to Stark! Go!". Eleanor looked at Steve incredulously at hearing him dismiss Natasha's safety like that.

"Do you have eyes on Nat?", Clint reiterated.

"Go!".

"No, do not go, where the hell is Nat, Barton?!", she yelled into her own earpiece whilst the train continued its journey of wreckage down the street. She didn't get a reply and hazarded a guess that Clint had been forced to follow the Captain's orders.

"Civilians in our path", Steve spoke to Pietro, who swiftly ran outside using his superspeed to move people out of the way. "Can you stop this thing?", he then turned to Wanda.

Eleanor looked out of the front window before Wanda could respond and saw that they were approaching a brick building. The likelihood of dying on this thing was looking higher and higher. "Building!", she yelled to get Steve's attention.

He moved in front of her and moved her to the side as he lifted his shield to try and take most of the impact of the debris flying through the window. She grunted when her back harshly hit the wall, but her eyebrows shot up when Steve was hit with something metallic and was thrown backwards.

Wanda seemed to look ahead at the two desperately, most likely feeling very out of her depth. But the challenge needed to be taken on, the train needed to be slowed down. More red magic flowed out of her hands and into the floor of the train, Eleanor couldn't help but watch in awe as she heard the wheels being stopped, the screeching sound of them against the concrete getting increasingly louder.

The train slowly came to a halt, leaving the three panting from pain and exhaustion. With death no longer on the horizon for her, the reality of the situation with Nat kicked in, and she glared at Steve whilst he and Wanda stepped off of the train.

Eleanor had never felt such a level of anger in her life, she was seeing red. She watched as Wanda went to comfort her brother who was on the verge of collapsing from over-exertion, and stepped off when Steve approached the twins.

Ignoring the pain that was radiating across every muscle in her body, she walked forward. It took her a few moments to reach the trio who seemed to be having a heated discussion. The crowds of people rescuing the passengers and getting them away from the train crash were preventing her from reaching them sooner, but she eventually reached the Captain's side, and she had no plans of holding back.

When her march over to him ended, the twins looked at her confused, they had no clue what had happened to Natasha, and even if they did they didn't know the group at all, so wouldn't know the effect that it had on Eleanor.

Steve turned to face the smaller woman just as she delivered a hard punch to his stomach. It made him wheeze for a second, but he was a super-soldier so he could take a punch. Wanda's eyes bulged and Pietro awkwardly looked down as Eleanor began yelling at the man through gritted teeth, "What the hell is your problem, Rogers?".

"What are you talking about?", he took a step back whilst massaging the area where she had punched him, it had hurt more than he cared to admit.

"That murder bot kidnapped my wife, and all you could tell Clint to do was to continue flying away?! Now we have no idea where she is you asshole!". When Steve's face hardened, Eleanor briefly looked over to the twins who were seeing one hell of a show.

Her jaw clenched when she made eye contact with Wanda, but yelling at the girl for traumatising them all was the least of her worries right now. "We had to make sure that the Cradle got away, we will find her".

"You best hope we do Rogers, or so help me God I will personally make sure that your days are numbered", she shoved past Steve making sure to barge him with her shoulder, sending him stumbling slightly as she headed into the city where the agreed-upon jet collection point was.

The twins and Steve sheepishly followed behind, not wanting to incur the wrath of Eleanor any further. She felt tears prick her eyes, but she was too angry with the people behind her to let them fall. But when she continued thinking of all the worst-case scenarios and how she might never see Nat again, she came to an abrupt stop whilst staring blankly ahead.

The twins kept their distance as they looked at the woman on the verge of a breakdown, but Steve sighed softly and stepped forward. Eleanor didn't notice the movement behind her, so when Steve gently placed his hand on her shoulder to check in on her, she flinched and whipped her head around to face him.

The anger that resurfaced snapped her out of the chain of intrusive thoughts, and she shrugged him off. "Get off of me", she mumbled and continued walking, seeing the jet slowly landing in front of them a few metres away.

As they neared the vehicle, the hatch opened, revealing a sympathetic-looking Tony, and a guilty-looking Clint. With heavy steps, she entered the jet and was met with Clint immediately rushing forward to apologise. "Not your fault", she murmured with a small smile and allowed him to wrap an arm around her shoulder.

Tony sat in the pilot's seat and got the jet into the air. Steve and the twins sat awkwardly towards the back of the jet. Steve didn't want to enrage Eleanor further, and the Maximoffs simply felt out of place.

That ride back to the Tower was the worst time of Eleanor's life. She stared at the Regeneration Cradle that had been planted in the middle of the jet, and her thoughts kept wandering to how that damned box was the thing that had been the cause of her wife getting kidnapped.

Usually, Eleanor loved her job, but when she was reminded of both hers and Natasha's mortality and how fragile it is, it made her begin to think that it wasn't worth the heartbreak that one of them will feel if one of them crosses that line. Of course, there was no backing out now, the fate of the world was resting on the group's shoulders. She understood the gravity of the situation, but still couldn't help but feel unimaginable levels of anger towards the world that her wife had practically been a bargaining chip for receiving a cradle.

She found herself getting lost in her thoughts, but was brought back into reality when Clint's arm that was still wrapped around her gave her a small squeeze of reassurance. Exhaling a shaky breath, she looked away from the cradle and instead to the front window of the jet.

Eleanor didn't know if her wife was alive or dead, but the one thing that she did know is if it was the latter then she would rip Ultron apart piece by piece.
