《The Younger Agent - Natasha Romanoff x OC》Chapter 64 - Mistakes and Misunderstandings

A smashing noise was heard from nearby which startled the group of heroes. Turning around to look out of the window they saw a bot flying away with something that was glowing blue. It didn't take long for it to click in everyone's minds what that was. Eleanor's eyes widened in realisation, the bad night just got even worse.
"The Sceptre!", Thor bellowed and took off in flight himself, smashing through one of the side windows in pursuit. They watched helplessly as the God chased after the weapon, but there was nothing that they could do other than wait and try and figure out what was occurring from inside of the Tower. The Sceptre was not a good thing to lose, at all.
When they had gotten their heads around what had just occurred, it was decided that it would be best to get 'Ultron' into the lab and discuss things further there, instead of in the social area of the tower. Plus, Eleanor was coated in liquor and Natasha wanted to get into some comfier clothes, so whilst the bot was moved they rushed to their apartment.
Both decided on a basic tee and hoodie, but Eleanor opted for sweatpants, unlike Nat who went for leggings. They also quickly disinfected and bandaged up the small cuts that Eleanor had obtained from jumping onto fragile glass shelving. They weren't big cuts but an infection wasn't desirable, especially when it was so avoidable. Whilst Eleanor completed the final steps Natasha said that she would go down to the lab and give the others a hand.
Eleanor nodded before being left alone to finish wrapping her arms, it didn't take long. For a split second, once the comfy clothes were on and the bandages were done, she almost forgot that she needed to go and deal with whatever was going on in the lab. With the adrenaline levels from the fight on a decline, the tiredness and aches were kicking in. She was so ready for bed.
But with loud sighs, she made her way over to the lab. The tension in there could be cut with a knife. Small conversations were happening, but it was quite obvious that the main part was being left for her arrival. Though Tony was silent as he leaned on the table with the broken bot on, which was odd, she was expecting him to be rambling something about how this wasn't supposed to happen.
So when she walked into the room, all eyes were briefly on her before Bruce cleared his throat and made a start. "All of our work is gone, Ultron cleared out. He used the internet as an escape hatch".
Eleanor continued making her way to the back of the room where Natasha was situated at a laptop, scouring through their databases. From the back, she was able to see everything that was going on, including Maria pulling glass out of her feet with plyers. Ouch. That looked painful. However, she also noticed that Thor had still not returned, once again she had been expecting the opposite.
"You okay?", Maria silently mouthed to Eleanor when she felt eyes on her suddenly, the younger woman nodded and gestured upwards with her head to ask Maria as well, who tilted her head a few times as her response of 'Could be better'.
"Ultron", Steve muttered, sounding greatly unhappy with the fact that Ultron existed, which was a mutual feeling amongst the group.
"He's been in everything. Files, surveillance", Nat turned back around to the group and crossed her arms, "Probably knows more about us than we know about each other". Eleanor exhaled deeply with her cheeks puffed out, it usually isn't great having your enemy knowing so much about you. This would be a hard fight if it came down to that.

Clint also suddenly looked on edge, his first thoughts were likely going to his wife and kids. Hopefully, there was nothing on them within the giant database that the Avengers had.
"He's in your files, he's in the internet", Rhodey now stepped forward clutching his injured shoulder, also looking less than enthused that this situation even existed. "What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?".
Maria looked up and paused fixing up her feet, "Nuclear codes".
"Nuclear codes", Rhodey confirmed. The situation was looking direr and direr with each passing second, if nuclear attacks were launched by this thing there would be nothing that they could do to stop it. "Look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can".
Eleanor couldn't help but notice how quiet Tony was being still, considering it was he and Bruce that created this bot hellbent on their extinction. Yet, there was still no explanation provided.
Natasha had been frowning since Maria had mentioned the codes, "Nukes? He said he wanted us dead".
"He didn't say 'dead'. He said 'extinct'". Steve had a fair point, someone who uses that word probably won't be careful with how they go about their actions.
"He also said he killed somebody".
"There wasn't anyone else in the building", Maria replied to Clint, confirming Eleanor's train of thought from before the fight kicked off. None of this seemed to be making sense, and the only people that could provide an explanation were in fact not doing so.
Though Eleanor's hopes were coming to life when she saw Tony had stepped into the middle of the room, hopefully now some light would be shed on whatever the hell was going on. Arms crossed and head tilted in anticipation, she watched as Tony gestured forward with the device that he had tried to contact Jarvis with before the fight.
"Yes there was", a glowing orange ball appeared in the middle of the room following the forward motion with the handheld contraption. But it was a ball of chaos, strings of orange were scattered everywhere, it looked as though a bomb had been set off within it.
The Avengers all knew this ball to be their trusty friend, Jarvis. Usually, Jarvis wasn't so scattered and formed a complex, uniform sphere. Clearly, this was Ultron's kill.
"What? This is insane", Bruce walked forward and held his arms out to the width of the broken ball, almost as though he was cradling a dead body.
Eleanor couldn't help but feel a sudden sadness wash over her. Sure, Jarvis was an AI and Tony had the means to build more AIs, but Jarvis had been helping the group for months. He was a part of the team. Seeing his usual form in such chaos was a kick in the stomach.
"Jarvis was the first line of defence. He would have shut Ultron down. It makes sense", Steve thought out loud.
"No. Ultron could have assimilated Jarvis. This isn't strategy. This is rage", Bruce corrected Steve whilst trying to figure out what had happened simultaneously. So, Ultron really was out for blood. Natasha shifted uncomfortably in her spot next to Eleanor, this was all a lot to try and take in. Just a few hours ago they were celebrating a win and saying farewell to a friend, now they were in the midst of something unknown, but dangerous.
Eleanor usually had a lot of patience for Tony and his antics, but she just felt frustrated that this was going on and none of them knew about it. Trying to create an AI to the level that Ultron was is risky, and clearly, it was a risk he thought that he could take without so much as a word about it. Even though his intentions may have been good, this whole thing seemed reckless.

There wasn't much time for the group to absorb this information about Jarvis, as Thor himself marched in with anger, throwing everyone's train of thought off of the tracks and into a ditch. Eleanor went to shoot him a small smile to say hi, but when she saw the rage radiating off of him she decided not to, and instead concern was etched onto her features.
The concern increased tenfold when Thor marched through Jarvis' corpse and lifted Tony up by the throat. "It's going around", Clint voiced, so he clearly was just as frustrated.
"Come on, use your words, buddy", Tony choked out. Everyone in the room seemed to take a step forward but held back slightly. Thor clearly didn't need to be aggravated further so hesitancy was felt by all to go near him.
"I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark". The tone of voice that Thor spoke with scared Eleanor more than his current action of throttling Tony. It came out at a normal volume, and smooth. His voice didn't falter at all. People out of control tended to yell, Thor was clearly very much in control of his actions and intent to hurt.
"Thor! The Legionnaire", Steve moved forward to get the answer that they all wanted to hear now that the God was back.
He threw Tony down, sending him stumbling slightly, but he still looked at the man with pure rage. "Trail went out about 100 miles out, but it's headed North. And it has the Sceptre. Now we have to retrieve it, again". There was a collective shaking of heads around the room at hearing that the Sceptre had been lost. There was no telling what Ultron would do with it.
"Genie's out of that bottle. Clear and present is Ultron". Natasha once again spoke, and Eleanor absentmindedly nodded along, it would indeed be hard to get the Sceptre back from the thing that shouldn't have even existed in the first place.
"I don't understand", Dr Cho had leaned over the bot and then turned back to the group, "You built this programme. Why is it trying to kill us?".
"Yeah, I'd quite like to know why your murderous lovechild is out to get us as well", Eleanor looked between Banner and Stark with an eyebrow raised and a very fake smile resting on her lips. Tony had his back turned to the rest of the group so couldn't see her, but could definitely sense the malice in her words. Bruce just looked around guiltily.
That guilty look soon turned into a hardened expression as he frantically shook his head to get Tony to shut up, as the man had suddenly started laughing after being questioned.
"You think this is funny?", Thor turned to him.
"No", Tony spoke as he turned around to face the group again, "It's probably not, right? This is very terrible. Is it so... it is... it's so terrible", he chuckled again at the end. It was clearly from nerves and disbelief but to the already angered group of people in the room, it was just increasing that.
"This could have been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand".
"No", Tony interrupted Thor before he had finished speaking and stepped towards the God, "No. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It is funny. It's a hoot that you don't get why we need this".
"Tony, maybe this might not be the time", Bruce chimed in for the first time in a while. The tension and frustration in the room was getting unbearable, it really didn't help that everyone was exhausted at this point.
"Really? That's it?", Tony again turned to Bruce, the man was like a yo-yo, "You just roll over, show your belly every time somebody snarls?". Eleanor shrugged ever so slightly that it was barely noticeable, for a man who could turn into a giant punch monster when angry, tense confrontation avoidance was probably a good technique.
"Only when I've created a murder bot", Bruce softly retorted, and even though Eleanor could not stand the guy, she couldn't help but feel the need to stifle a laugh at his words in that tone. Nat turned to her at seeing her shoulders shake slightly and almost smiled herself but her attention was yanked back to the centre of the room.
"We didn't. We weren't even close. Were we close to an interface?". Bruce responded by shrugging one of his shoulders and tugging the corners of his lips down in a way that says 'not sure, but seems like it'.
"Well, you did something right. And you did it right here. The Avengers were supposed to be different than SHIELD". Steve walked forward, making Eleanor internally grimace at the reminder of SHIELD being HYDRA.
"Anybody remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole? Saved New York?".
"No, it's never come up", Rhodey sarcastically responded. Eleanor rolled her eyes at Stark bringing that up for brownie points in this situation. Natasha too thought that it was a rather inappropriate time, so turned her head away in disbelief.
"A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing 300 feet below it". A silence filled the room as Tony looked ahead in brief thought. "We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the livelong day, but that up there, that's... that's the endgame. How were you guys planning on beating that?".
Eleanor hated to admit the fact that Tony had a point, there was no way that they could keep holding off alien attacks if that was required of them. But there had to be a better solution than this.
"Together", Steve answered, which was reminiscent of the Battle of New York. Just like back then, Eleanor didn't see this as a completely sufficient enough answer but she let it slide.
"We'll lose", Tony stepped forward.
"Then we'll do that together too". There was again an awkward silence whilst Tony's eyes flitted about the room in front of him. "Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's start making it smaller".
Eleanor and Natasha turned to each other and gave each other small smiles to make each other feel slightly better, though they didn't reach their eyes. Which didn't go unnoticed, but there was no time for a check-in or even rest. They had to follow the others out of the lab and through the busted social area to get up to one of the meeting/work rooms. The night was going to be filled with looking through paper copies of different files if they weren't able to get their hands on their data again.
It was going to be a long one.

Will release on a minimum weekly schedule. -After a backlog of chapters, posting will slow, but in the interim you can expect a chapter a day up until roughly 25 chapters. -This story at times will potentially carry some heavy moments, but the tone is intended to be lighter overall. -There are invisible game-like elements in this story, but nothing so concrete as a dedicated gamelit novel. -I personally have some issues with anxiety, so I may or may not interact with the community a lot. I'll try if anyone has questions, but I can't guarantee that it'll be consistent. -MC is a non-human lead, and will never actually become human. Romance will potentially happen between side-characters, but not with the MC. -MC IS NOT THE ONLY VIEW POINT. I have to put that out there because people sometimes hate alternate PoV's in a story. None of them will be filler, and they'll be there only to give a little bit more nuance and meaning to the world that the MC has stepped in, or is about to be imminently important. I'll try to keep them down, but this also helps to prevent me from burning out getting trapped in one view. -Most of all, I hope that this story is enjoyable to you, and that you have a great time reading it! -Written by Michael Adams, Cowritten/Edited by Summer Kent
