《The Younger Agent - Natasha Romanoff x OC》Chapter 42 - On The Road Again

It didn't take long at all to complete the walk to the mall, their apartment was situated in the middle of a populated part of the city, so there was easy access to anything really, a mall being one of them.

They did spot a few cars that they recognised to be SHIELD owned driving around, which was an issue, so they had to keep their heads down whilst walking, Captain America was quite recognisable, but hopefully in everyday, modern clothing he'd blend in.

It took them exactly eleven minutes to get inside the mall from their apartment, and now that they were inside, Steve was being absolutely useless. His pace was uneven and he kept looking around with slight panic on his face. He did not look like the average guy out on a shopping trip. He looked like a guilty man on the run, which is the opposite of what they wanted him to look like.

"First rule of going on the run is don't run, walk", Nat tried to casually get him to take a chill pill as they walked past the fountain.

"If I run in these shoes, they're gonna fall off".

"Did no one teach you how to tie your laces?", Eleanor joked from beside Nat, earning an elbow to the arm.

"Yes, they did, these just aren't exactly appropriate attire", Steve shrugged as they stepped up onto the escalator.

"They're perfect for mall trips", Eleanor reasoned, they just needed to look casual, there was nothing to be complaining about.

The Apple Store was relatively close to the escalator on the top floor, so they made a beeline for it. Once a laptop had been selected, Steve handed the drive over to Nat, "Wonder which one of us got the intel that Fury wanted", Eleanor quietly pondered with a smirk, clearly looking for competition. They had handed over two USBs but had only been given one back.

"We shall see", Nat smirked in return before getting back to business, "The drive has a level six homing programme, so as soon as we boot up SHIELD will know exactly where we are". The reason for being in the mall and not one of their homes.

"How much time do we have?", Steve was still looking around the place, looking very on edge.

"About nine minutes from...", Nat plugged the drive into the laptop, "Now".

"Let the race begin", Eleanor muttered.

Nat was tapping away at the keys at a fast pace, "Fury was right about that ship, somebody's trying to hide something". She opened a file, making Eleanor narrow her eyes slightly at the file name, it was one she recognised.

"That's the file that had the extra protection I had to bypass to download", she mumbled looking at the information on the screen before her eyes widened slightly, "That means I win".

"Whatever", Nat scoffed with amusement as more things loaded up on the screen. "This drive is protected by some sort of AI. It keeps rewriting itself to counter my commands".

"Can you override it?", Steve asked as he trained his attention on the screen as well.

"The person who developed this is slightly smarter than me", she glanced at Steve before looking back at the screen, "Slightly". Eleanor held back a laugh knowing that now is not the time to bruise her girlfriend's ego.

"I'm gonna try running a tracer. This is a programme that SHIELD developed to track hostile malware. So, if we can't read the file, maybe we can find out where it came from". Eleanor absentmindedly nodded along at Nat's explanation to Steve, she was familiar with that tracer, having used it before a few times.

"Can I help you guys with anything?", an employee with an amazing beard and long hair came up to them. Eleanor turned around with a sweet smile, "No, thank you". She needed to get his attention away from the laptop.

Nat grabbed ahold of Steve's shoulders as he stood closer, and put on a big smile and her voice raised an octave, "My fiancé was just helping me with some honeymoon destinations", she grinned before immediately turning back to the laptop.

"Right. We're getting married". Eleanor nodded along as Steve sounded very unconvincing.

"Congratulations! Where are you guys thinking about going?", the employee smiled. Eleanor hoped that he would have left, but no, the dude had to be friendly.

Steve looked back to the file as it highlighted New Jersey on the map, "New Jersey".

Eleanor scrunched her face slightly as that didn't sound like a great honeymoon place. "Oh", the employee stopped and a look of realisation spread across his face when he looked back at Steve. Oh no. "I have the exact same glasses". Eleanor had no clue how he didn't recognise him after fully staring at his face but she didn't question it too hard, relief taking over instead.

"Wow, you two are practically twins", Nat drawled out whilst keeping her attention on the laptop. Eleanor reached behind her and smacked Nat's arm for making fun of him. Luckily the employee didn't notice.

"Yeah, I wish", the employee obliviously chuckled as he reached his hands out towards Steve, "Specimen. If you guys need anything, I've been Aaron".

"Thank you, Aaron!", Eleanor sweetly smiled before they turned back to Natasha.

"You two gettin' married, huh? What am I here? The maid?".

"Exactly", Nat smiled, still not moving her eyes from the file.

"You said nine minutes, come on".

"Shh, relax", Nat drew out softly. "Got it". Eleanor saw a proud little smirk on her face as the exact location came up on the screen. Wheaton, NJ.

Nat and Eleanor smiled slightly, before noticing Steve leaning in with more of a sombre look on his face, "You know it?", Nat hazarded a guess.

"I used to. Let's go". He pulled the USB out and started walking off, so Nat and Eleanor hurried after him and out of the shop, hurrying towards the escalator.

"Standard tac team. Two behind, two across, and two coming straight at us", Steve looked around clearly spotting the people that were after him, and now consequently them. "If they make us, I'll engage, you two hit the south escalator to the metro".

Eleanor rolled her eyes slightly, that is the opposite of what they wanted to be doing right now if they wanted to make it to New Jersey without being chased all of the way there. "No, we aren't drawing attention to ourselves", Eleanor started.

Nat continued, "Yup, shut up and put your arm around me, Steve, laugh at something I said". Eleanor was doing a fine job of looking inconspicuous, it was Steve that they needed to make look normal because he was struggling a bit.

"What?".

"Do it". He complied, wrapping an arm around Nat and fake laughing as they walked past an Agent. Eleanor had her head down slightly but did a visible cheesy grin with a small nose scrunch so that it looked like she was amused by whatever her 'friend' said as well.

Now it was time to go down the escalator, Nat got on first, Steve at the back, and Eleanor in the middle. It went well at first until Nat and Eleanor spotted Rumlow on the adjacent escalator. "Shit", Eleanor muttered.

"Kiss me", Nat turned to her.

"What?", Steve leaned over, sounding very confused at the current developments.

"Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable", Nat continued before pulling Eleanor in by the collar of her shirt and pushing her lips onto hers. Eleanor wasn't complaining, she liked kissing Natasha.

Steve looked down so that Rumlow wouldn't spot him if he still looked their way even with the two in front of him having a makeout session.

After Rumlow had passed, Nat pulled away, the two gave each other soft smiles before Nat turned around, "You still uncomfortable".

Eleanor shook her head, "Nope!".

"I am a little", Steve said making Eleanor turn and laugh lightly.

"You didn't enjoy the show?", Eleanor teased as they stepped off of the escalator.

"I did", Natasha happily chimed in with a smirk as she took ahold of Eleanor's hand.

"That's not exactly the word I would use". He sounded a bit frustrated, but that made sense, it was only hours ago that he felt completely lied to by the two women, and now he was having to work with them as they continued their, in his opinion, ill-timed jokes whilst on the job.

The trio kept their heads down as they walked through the lower level of the mall, still unsure of the exact whereabouts of all the potential Agents around. But they did get out without being spotted, somehow.

The next issue was finding a car to get to New Jersey. Natasha's Corvette was still at the hospital so they couldn't go there, and Steve didn't have a car. It wasn't like they could call a taxi to do the three-hour drive, they didn't have that much money on them, and they didn't want to use their cards, a huge digital footprint. They might as well dip themselves in neon paint and dance around the front of SHIELD. They could go home and grab some cash from the huge stash that they have hidden, but with Agents patrolling the city to find them, they didn't want to keep going back and forth from their home, scared that it would be found out.

"How are we gonna get there?", Eleanor voiced as they made their exit and started walking into a less populated area.

"I don't know, they've probably taken the car", Natasha sounded completely bummed out. She really did love that car, and even though Eleanor took the piss out of her for it at times, she did feel bad.

"You'll get another one, I promise", Eleanor squeezed her hand, "Besides, there's no fucking way I would have sat on that centre console for three hours".

"I would have loved to see that", Nat laughed knowing that she would have done random turns and harsh braking all of the way there.

"I'm sure you would".

Steve seemed to have no interest in the conversation taking place, it was like he was still trying to freeze the two women out, he had no choice but to work with them, but that's all this was, working with them. So, he wasn't going to actively participate in messing around with them.

"I can get us a car", he stated simply.

"Oh?", Natasha whipped her head around to face him, "How?".

"We just need to get to a quieter area, then leave it to me".

Eleanor frowned slightly but told them to take the next right as it was a relatively quiet area. They walked for another three minutes before Steve spotted a blue truck and stopped. He looked around, checking for people, and walked to the driver's side front door. At this point, Natasha and Eleanor had clearly deducted what he was going to do. Steal a car.

They both knew how to hotwire a vehicle, but as there seemed to be no one around, they looked ahead at him curiously, wanting to see if he was able to do it. Surprisingly, he managed to get the lock open, earning some impressed nods from the Agents. He got in the car and opened the passenger side door, and the back door from the inside.

Nat immediately got in the front, leaving Eleanor to get in the back, "Why am I always in the back?", she grumbled as she did her seatbelt.

"Because you never try and stop me from getting in the front", Nat shrugged.

"Would it work if I did?".

"Oh, God's no".

Eleanor flicked the back of Nat's head and quickly leant back into her seat as Nat immediately turned to try and punch her. "Ha! You missed".

Nat glared at her, before narrowing her eyes and smirking slightly, but turned to face Steve as she heard him huffing with frustration.

He had pulled a panel out from below the steering wheel and was attempting to start the engine by crossing some wires over, it seemed that he was having a tough time doing so. "You alright?", Nat asked.

"Yeah, almost got it". It took a few minutes but he did manage to get the truck started.

He pulled out into the street and began their journey to New Jersey, hopefully, it wouldn't be completely awkward or Eleanor might have to barrel roll out of the car to escape.

"Can we put some music on?", Eleanor requested after five minutes of silence.

"No, I don't like the new stuff", Steve stated with an 'I'm putting my foot down' voice. Eleanor crossed her arms and leaned back to look out of the window like a pouting kid, a three hour awkward as hell car journey was bad enough without complete silence. Nat frowned slightly at Steve before turning and looking out of the window herself, regretting not getting in the back with Eleanor, at least then they could have spent the time annoying each other with little games. Oh well. Zero hours down, three to go.
