《The Devil's Love》Playing with Fire: Chapter 15: Anton

Sarah had closed the doors to me, keeping me out of the bedroom. I was being a pest apparently, distracting her from getting ready and with such little time left, she needed to be distraction free. So I waited in the lounge room, completely ready.

My eyes could not leave the door knowing that she was going to come through it at any moment and didn't want to miss it.

Annoyingly, someone knocked on the door. I got up from the lounge reluctantly, wishing that I could tell the person to go away. Maybe I might.

I thought that until I opened the door and saw Hemoi standing in front of me. Telling an elven prince to go away wouldn't go down too well. Not so much because he was an elf or a prince but the fact that he had a fae warrior for a wife, one that would gut me for the fun of it. Alvarie would take great pleasure in the burdensome task, I'm sure. Especially knowing that it wouldn't kill me, she would revel in the fact that once I had repaired myself, she'd get to have her fun all over again. No one ever feared for the prince's life when she was around.

"Your highness, to what do I owe this pleasure?"

Alvarie lingered in the background, her knowing smile exuding as she watched me.

"We were on our way to the room, did you realize you're cutting it fine?"

"I did, however, Sarah is still getting ready."

Hemoi raised an eyebrow at me and looked to my side. I turned and saw Sarah standing behind me.

"All done." She said softly.

"Well then, don't be long. You might be the devil but that does not excuse tardiness to a wedding."

He turned, taking his wife's hand and continued down the corridor.

"Anton?"

Sarah tilted her head slightly as she looked at me, I was still staring. Unable to turn away from her now that we were alone.

"You look divine."

A light pink blushed across her cheeks as my fingers trailed over the soft material of her dress. A pretty red dress that was a pale coloring with large outlines of white flowers.

"We should go," I said reluctantly. "Apparently it is rude to be late to a wedding. I suspect that our reasoning that I couldn't tear away from you and your beauty would not be sufficient."

She grinned as I kissed along her jaw and down her neck.

"I do like your hair up, exposing your delicate neck for me to kiss with ease."

Hearing William and Eliria talking dragged me from the moment, one that would have us in trouble very soon. Taking Sarah's hand we moved through the opened the door and saw them assisting Nicolas along the corridor.

"Is he still drunk?"

"No, quietly freaking out." William returned.

With a nod of understanding, I shut the door and we quickly moved past them.

"Are you going to be like that?" Sarah asked with a naughty smirk.

"That is highly likely. The fear of screwing up the most important day of our life together is enough to make the strongest tremble with fear."

Or the sudden realization lives were about to change. Even though our life together was just beginning, I was quietly freaking out. I'd already realized that I was going from a single status to a relationship status and that after an eternity of doing as I pleased without consequence was about to change, I was obviously a little anxious.

I worried that I would not be able to keep her happy, that maybe after a hundred years together she would be bored of me. There was no fear for my own thoughts or fidelity, I could never detract from her. But I worried for Sarah, I didn't want the heartache of finding out about her indiscretions.

As we entered the function room where the service was being held, I found the worst of my fears in front of me. Elias Pelegrinni, a vampire elder that was more than just a leech of blood. He was a leech of women too.

"Master Dremain." He offered so suavely as his eyes left me for Sarah. "And friend."

With a smile that could have women dropping to his feet to beg him for a moment in his bed, he whisked Sarah's hand away and kissed her knuckles.

"Sarah." She said with one mighty frown.

"Sarah, this is Master Elias Pelegrinni, a vampire who does not understand boundaries."

"Being a gentleman, Anton. It's not a hard concept to understand, I'm sure you've figured it out."

Sarah pulled her hand away, looking a little uneasy. I knew she still had a lot of reservations about vampires and having one being the charming man in front of her must be difficult to deal with.

"You, a gentleman?" Augustus chipped in. "I find that hard to believe."

Elias huffed and walked away, leaving us with an easier situation. Augustus was seemingly hot and cold but he wasn't a sexual predator like Elias was. Or at least I didn't think he was. Being that I rarely saw him, I couldn't honestly say either way. Of course, I wasn't an idiot. I would not leave Sarah alone with any of the elders, they all had a sophistication about them that could lure any woman into their bed.

"Sarah, this is Master Augustus Valerii."

My words were cut short as I looked at his friend and frowned.

"Augustus, how is it that you have a Solanite for company?"

"A farcical set of events, I can assure you." He said dryly. "She does not speak anything other than the native language so feel free to say whatever you please, she will have no idea what you are saying."

All I could think of was the Solanite councilor that was sitting in front of me at the interview.

"I must speak with you about this."

"Agreed." He returned. "Maybe you'd like to deliver her back to her own realm, save me from having my world destroyed by..."

He stopped and looked at the woman. She had incredible beauty and I wondered why he was being so stand-offish towards her. True to the Solanite beings, she was tall with an athletic frame. Long black hair fell over her shoulders, a dark mocha skin that had darker markings under her eyes. And the eyes, if it weren't for the councilor I wouldn't have seen such stunning eyes in a long time. They were bright orange, thoroughly amazing.

"Yana, this is Anton. Devil."

Augustus held two fingers at the top of his head, trying to indicate the horns to her. Her eyes widened at me and then she frowned.

"Damond." she said with a slight sneer of her lip.

"Yes, that's right." Augustus grinned with a slight chuckle. "Damond."

"Great, thanks for that." I huffed. "A little context would be nice."

He shrugged as if he didn't care, the smirk growing a little wider.

The door opened again, Nicolas looking a little more coherent.

"My lord."

"Nicolas, you're looking rather hungover."

"Yes, lesson learned, no repeat performance."

Sarah pouted as she looked at him.

"Aww, last night was fun."

He nodded, looking a little pale.

"Go and find something to distract yourself with," William said as he pushed Nicolas past us.

"Yes, I think we all should. Augustus, please make sure you make time to have that discussion with me."

"Of course."

Taking Sarah's hand and entering the room, I could feel the eyes upon us and the whispers that they tried to keep low enough that I could not hear, but I could.

She is not a demon. Since when did the devil fraternize with the humans? Smell how good her blood is, so pure.

The words burned into me, no more so than one that asked another of how much they thought I was paying Sarah like she was an escort. My head turned with fury to the offender who instantly shrank back into her seat when she realized I heard her. Then all whispers stopped.

We found our seats and before she sat down Sarah pulled me closer. Her hand slid around my neck, lacing her fingers through the ends of my hair.

"Pay no attention to their jealousy," she whispered in my ear. "Let them talk as they want, it will make no difference to who we are."

I nodded solemnly, taking her hand into mine as we waited for the service to start. Knowing that she heard them made me angrier. If the service wasn't about to begin, I would have dragged them out and made them apologize under threat of a really great view of the pit.

I could offer them a holiday in hell. Maybe roasting a rockin' tan by the lake of lava on the fiery rock ledges and when that became too much for them, maybe a dip into the lava for a refresher from that roasting will be right up their alley.

With Sarah looking through the little order of service booklet, I turned to the worst offender. The one that inferred Sarah was an escort and shot her a view of what could be. Direct into her mind, a vision of what would happen if she didn't shut her jealous mouth.

Her eyes connected with mine in shock, fear ripping through her features. I turned back to the front, satisfied that I had taught the rude thing a lesson.
