"i'm gonna boycott the oscars." haley said, entering elias' trailer the next day. she was surprised to see that he and timothée were playing a video game. the three of them had moved back to staying at their studio trailers as filming wrapped up.
"amazing," elias said drily, still focused on the screen. "wait, what?"
"look at this shit!" haley thrust her phone in front of the two boys, whose attention immediately shifted to her screen. "they aren't gonna award the editors and original score creators and hair and makeup people on air anymore. if we let on with this, then they're probably gonna remove all those categories in the future." she explained.
"that's actually very smart of you," timmy remarked, setting down his controller. haley flopped onto the space beside him on the sofa and accepted a little kiss he gave her on the cheek. "i'm sure lots of people would back you up, if you spoke first. and," he added, "you're one of the top bets to win best actress, one of the youngest among the nominees this year, and i'm sure your fanbase would cheer you on."
"you really think so?"
"i'll stand behind you, whatever you say."
To combat slumping ratings, the are undergoing a radical slimming down, with eight awards to be presented off-air during next month's telecast.
In a letter sent Tuesday to members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the group's president, David Rubin, said that the awards for film editing, production design, sound, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score) and the three short film awards for documentary, live-action and animated short will be presented at the ceremony before the live broadcast begins on ABC.
Now, instead of starting the ceremony and broadcast all at once, the Dolby Theatre ceremony will begin an hour before the telecast does. The presentation and speeches of those early, eight winners will be edited and featured during the three-hour live broadcast, which Rubin emphasized would still provide each winner their "Oscar moment."

However, the announcement didn't sit well with many people, particularly this year's Best Actress nominee, Haley Leneghan. The star of this year's biggest box office hit, The Story of a Pretty Woman, took to Twitter to share her opinion regarding the 'slimming down' of the popular awards show.
"@TheAcademy," Leneghan said, in a Notes app screenshot, "what do you call this? I know that the Oscars ceremony is TV and intended for entertainment, but don't you think it's essential to give credit where it's due? That's the whole point of this award show, so if you're concerned about numbers or viewer stats, I suggest you bury that in your asses. The many actors, actresses and directors are just faces in front of the movie, but these amazing, brilliant editors, hairstylists, makeup artists, animators, designers, musicians and more deserve as much recognition as anyone else. As an actress, I've seen plenty of behind-the-scenes of the creative process, and I know how hard these people work tirelessly to help films become what we all know them as. Because of this, I have decided not to attend this year's Oscars unless changes will be made. and encourage my fellow actors and actresses to do the same."
Bury that in their asses. Powerful words.
So what do you think? Will Leneghan be an Oscars no-show if this keeps up? Remember, she's one of the most likely Best Actress bets this season. Will that impact the Academy's voting process? We'll have to wait and find out.
It's been only four days after Haley Leneghan's viral tweet, and the Academy has already backtracked.
For those of you who didn't know, Leneghan released a powerful message on Twitter just a few days ago, condemning the Academy's choice to award eight Oscar categories off-air. Since then, plenty of celebrities backed her up by either retweeting her post or sending out messages of their own that similarly called out the controversial choice of the people behind the yearly prestigious award show.

Some actresses and actors that have shown support for Leneghan include Zendaya, Dylan O'Brien, Tom Hanks, James McLean, Aurora Chase-Jackson, and more, who all stated their similar beliefs.
Today, four days later, the Academy has backtracked and released an apology on Twitter, stating that the screen time for this year's comedian Ellen DeGeneres would be reduced, using the extra time to award the eight categories that were previously to be awarded off-screen, but this time, on air.
Though Leneghan stated in her message that she would attend the ceremony only if the Academy changed their previous announcement, she and her representatives declined to comment when asked if the turnaround would guarantee her appearance at the awards show.
