Family

Leneghan was born in Manchester, the eldest of two children born to Lisa Leneghan (née Stiller), a fashion designer and David Leneghan, one of Hollywood's most popular actors and movie directors. Her mother is known for her colorful, creative designs and these played a very important part in women's fashion. Lisa Leneghan later founded her own fashion house, named Álainn, which translates into beautiful in Irish. Her father is known for his many movie roles and for directing various movies. Her brother, Griffin Leneghan, is known for his roles as Mike Wheeler in the Netflix series Stranger Things (2016) and Richie Tozier in the adaptation of Stephen King's horror thriller It (2017).

Leneghan's parents died in a car crash in late October 2018. At the time, she and her brother were only 20 and 15, respectively. She has since then taken over her mother's fashion empire, only to pass it on to Riley Lorne months later saying she was "much more suited to handle it" than she was.

It was her first major acting role since she was a child. Leneghan auditioned for the horror film Ma (2019) while at university, and got the role despite initially believing she had made a mess of her audition. In Ma, she portrays Maggie, whose friends befriend the main character who soon begins terrorizing them. Leneghan got the scripts for Booksmart (2019) and Five Feet Apart (2019) while filming Ma. She was initially asked to audition for the main character's crush in Booksmart, but auditioned for the character of Hope instead. Late in 2019, Leneghan said in an interview that one of the reasons she was eager to take the role of Stella in Five Feet Apart was because she read the story a year prior and loved it immediately.
