Josh looked at himself in the mirror. He was dressed unusually; he never would have worn the clothes he had on, but Brendon said that it was vital that they changed themselves as much as they could. That's why Josh was standing in front of a mirror, wearing ripped jeans and a Nirvana t-shirt. He didn't even know any Nirvana songs.

A knock on the door brought Josh out of his trance. He walked over and opened it to reveal Tyler, who was holding an empty backpack. He was shaking. It seemed he never stopped.

Josh smiled instead of talking when he was handed the bag. He watched Tyler turn to leave, and then as he hesitated in the hallway. He had only been staying with Josh for two days, so he still had no idea how to navigate the apartment. Josh figured that he subconsciously wasn't letting himself- if he grew to know the apartment, that would mean accepting that he was living there. Josh knew Tyler didn't want to do that.

They still hadn't signed the marriage papers. They were putting the activity off. They had done everything else they needed to except finalise it. Josh has gotten a visa and he was nearly a citizen. He just needed them to marry so he could get his green card. They were supposed to go to school that day, though, so they needed to sign them soon.

Josh walked out into the living room where Tyler was watching TV. He sat down next to the boy, who flinched. At least he didn't freeze like he used to.

"We need to sign the papers," Josh said gently.

Tyler nodded. "I know."

Josh checked the time on his phone. "We only have, like, twelve minutes until we have to leave."

"Okay," Tyler sighed. "We'll do it now."

Josh stood up and made his way to the kitchen with Tyler in tow. Sitting on the bench was a stack of papers, just waiting to be signed. Josh picked up a pen and quickly made his way through it, barely even reading it. He handed Tyler the pen, but his hands were shaking so much that he couldn't even write.

"It doesn't mean anything," Josh said gently. "Remember that. It's just a piece of paper."

Tyler nodded and took a deep breath. He signed it and put the pen down. He leant against the bench, his eyes closed, and took a few moments to even out his breathing. Brendon had already signed it as a witness, so they were done.

It was a while before Josh spoke. "I once went to Australia," he said, "and I saw this show when I put the TV on. There was this reality show, Married at First Sight. Strangers get married."

Tyler hummed. "Like us."

"Like us," Josh repeated.

They both stared at the papers for a while before Josh picked them up. He folded them into a large envelope and placed it in his bag. He needed to send it to his father to prove their marriage.

He turned to Tyler when he was done. "Do you drive?"

Tyler shook his head. "I don't have my license yet."

Josh clicked his tongue. "I've got mine, but America's crazy. You drive on the wrong side of the road and your wheel is on the left instead of the right."

"Isn't it like that everywhere?" Tyler asked.

"No way," Josh scoffed. "America's weird. You do everything differently. Measurement, driving, spelling. Weird."

Tyler smiled, just slightly. "I never really thought of that."

"Different countries, different systems," Josh said with a shrug.

"It's weird," Tyler said, "to think that we're -well, I'm- the odd one out. The rest of the world uses centimetres and metres and we used inches and feet. The rest of the world drives on the left and we drive on the right."

"School's different, too."

Tyler raised his eyebrows. "Really?"

"Of course," Josh said. "School's different, like, everywhere. Not many places have middle school."

Tyler nodded. "Well, I knew that, but it's still weird."

"Only Americans think that," Josh chuckled.

Tyler laughed too before looking down. His smile faded and he looked back up, his eyes glassy. "We're really married, huh?"

"Yeah," Josh replied, his voice weak.

"God," Tyler whispered. "I keep expecting to wake up."

"I'm sorry," Josh said sincerely.

Tyler shook his head. "It's not your fault."

With that, he walked away, probably to his room. Josh looked at the envelope containing their marriage certificate and let out a shaky breath. He blinked away his tears and swallowed the lump in his throat before grabbing his backpack and calling Tyler's name.
