《Silence - Adopted By Elizabeth Olsen》20.

"I'll be back within 20 minutes okay?" Mama says while caressing my cheek. I hum in response, too tired from yesterday to properly answer her. She asked if I wanted to join her to go some early morning grocery shopping, but yesterday took a lot of energy so I decided to stay in her bed.
After a few minutes of turning around in bed, I conclude that I won't be able to sleep anymore today. I reluctantly get out of bed, not wanting to be downstairs alone. But maybe I could surprise mama? Make her breakfast for when she comes back.
I get dressed for the day and run down the stairs with my newfound energy, wanting to prepare some sandwiches for the both of us. Mama bought me a stool so I could easily reach the counter, so I use it to take out some plates and get the bread from a drawer. I'm about to open the fridge when the doorbell rings.
I run to the door, expecting it to be mama who forgot her keys, but my heart sinks in my chest when I see that it's not her.
"Are you Casey Rogers?" One of the police officers asks. I nod my head slowly. Granny told me to never lie to a police officer unless I've done something wrong. I don't think I've done something wrong?
"Can we come in?" He asks this time, but he already walks past me before I can answer. Another officer follows him, offering me a sweet smile.
"Are you alone?" The first officer asks. Let's call him Mack. I like the name, Mack.
I nod my head in response, making him look intently at me. "Have you lost your tongue?" He grins. I open my mouth to speak, but no words come out.
"Casey we're here to take you to your new home." The other officer says kindly, crouching down to my height. But I don't want to go to a new home? I like this home.
"Is there an adult we can discuss this with?" She continues to ask. I shake my head, knowing I'm home alone. Why did Lizzie have to leave today? She never left me home alone before.
"Are you making breakfast yourself?" Mack asks, pointing at the kitchen counter where I was making breakfast. I nod with a smile, proud of the fact that I was making breakfast for me and mama.
"Okay kid, you can take one bag with you, we have to go." He says sternly. I start to panic, but the other officer calms me down. "I know change is scary, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing." She smiles weakly.
This is a bad thing, being away from Lizzie is a bad thing. My father warned me about this, for the men who will try to drag me away from my own home. I remember him getting arrested by police officers. They were very mean to him but he did nothing wrong.
"I lost my patience." Mack mutters before lifting me up and carrying me outside the door. I'm too scared to cry, to panic or to resist. I mentally change his name from Mack to Daniel. I like the name Mack, but I do not like this officer. I dislike the name Daniel, so it fits him.

When the door closes behind us my tears start to flow, they can't just take me, right? I try to remind every tv show I saw with officers in them, but I can't think of anything useful, still tired from yesterday and upset from today.
We're approaching the police car when a familiar voice shouts in our direction, making Daniel stop dead in his tracks.
"Get your hands off my daughter!" I shout at the police officer who is carrying a crying Casey. I stepped out of my car the second I saw a squad car parked in front of our door, but I never expected this.
He turns around and slowly puts Casey down. "Mama!" She screams, running into my arms with tears streaming down her cheeks. I wrap her in my arms, glaring at the police officer who gives me a serious look. I put her down carefully, opening the car door to the passenger seat.
"Are you okay?" I ask her, cupping her face. She slowly shakes her head, wrapping her arms around my neck. "Get inside the car." I mumble against her head, unwrapping her arms from my neck.
She looks confused at me. "But-"
"No buts. Inside the car. Now." I say sternly, not sure what the officers want but this feels like the best way to protect her for now. She slowly makes her way inside the car. Once I'm sure the door is closed and she is comfortable, I walk over to the police officers to give them a piece of my mind.
"Who are you?" The male police officer asks while crossing his arms. I don't care if he has a badge or a weapon, he tried to kidnap my daughter. "Elizabeth Olsen. Who are you?" I scoff, playing my famous card.
It's not a card I like to play, but I feel like this is as good as time as any. "The Elizabeth Olsen?" the female officer asks me softly. She seems nice and go women in uniform, so I keep my attention on the man standing in front of me.
"Yes 'The' Elizabeth Olsen. What were you doing with Casey?" I direct at the officer, crossing my arms while glaring at him. "Ma'am are you her legal guardian?" He asks with a confused look, making me drop my arms.
This is the moment where realisation sinks in. I am not her mother, she does not live with me and I basically have no rights since I'm just 'babysitting' her. "N-no." I mumble, barely able to answer his question.
The officers turn to look at each other before both looking back at me. Both of them seem utterly confused, but the female officer decides to take the lead. "Do you know who is?" she asks carefully.
"Mia something. I'm not sure if she carries the same last name as Casey, Rogers." I answer her as best as I can. "Yes, Mia Rogers was her legal guardian until she got admitted to a care facility. She willingly transferred the custody of Casey to a woman named Elizabeth Olsen." The woman continues.
Before I'm even able to comprehend what she just said, the other officer speaks. "She calls you mom, you call her your daughter and your name is Elizabeth Olsen. Are you trying to tell us you're not her legal guardian?"

"I- No I see her as my daughter but legally we're... Nothing." I state, feeling defeated and confused.
"Ma'am, is it possible for you to come with us to the police station so we can discuss this further?"
"Yes. I mean no. There's nobody to look after Casey, I don't want to leave her alone." I say hesitantly, looking back at the car where Casey is seated.
They both look at each other, having a silent conversation before slowly nodding.
"She can come with us."
I tap my fingers on the metal table standing in front of me. I look up from my lap to see the mean officer looking through a file. He slowly turns it around, pointing at the bottom of the paper.
"Is this your signature?"
I look intently, seeing that it is indeed my signature. "Y-yes." I answer, confused as to what my signature is doing there. I did not sign for anything.
"And your legal name is Elizabeth Chase Olsen?" He continues to ask, looking at me with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes?"
"Is that a question or an answer?"
"An answer. That's my full name." I reply a bit more confident this time.
"And the girl in the room beside us is Casey Olivia Rogers?" The other officer steps in, pointing to the wall behind me.
"Her second name is Olivia?" I question myself out loud. The officers look at each other, obviously judging me.
"I mean yes. The girl that was with me is named Casey." I clarify, wanting to get this whole situation over with as soon as possible. Whatever this is.
"Are you sure that's Casey? Could it be someone else?" The other officer asks.
Someone else? What is that supposed to mean.
"Someone else? What are you suggesting?" I ask both of them, slightly raising my voice.
"We're not suggesting anything, we're merely asking you questions." The female officer answers calmly, probably noticing my agitated state.
Of course, I'm on edge. They're asking the next question the second I answer the previous one and it's making me very uncomfortable.
"Do I need to call my lawyer?" I question them, what seems to be the wrong move.
"Have you done something wrong?"
"No. I- I don't know? I'm confused." I sigh deeply, going with my hands through my hair. What the hell is going on here? I just want to get back to Casey, cuddle her to sleep and watch ridiculous movies with her.
I still need to tell her that I'm an actress. I think she knows about Scarlett? I mean she has the pieces to figure it out but has she figured it out? What if I never get to tell her?
"Miss Olsen, your attention please." One of the officers snaps me out of my thoughts.
"Sorry, go on." I mutter, trying to focus on a file that is put in front of me.
"Let me explain. Mia Rogers, Casey her grandmother, admitted to abusing Casey daily. She has been diagnosed with a mental illness by a specialist. Apparently, she couldn't remember doing it, but when she saw the wounds on Casey's body, she put two and two together."
"Before she went to the police station to confess, she filed a change of custody, handing the attending officer a file with your name. This file."
I look at the piece of paper laying in front of me, reading over it carefully. It's a motion to transfer full custody of Casey Rogers over to me. And it's approved. But there's one thing I can't put my finger on.
"But it has my signature?" I ask the officer more than I state. I did not sign this, I didn't sign anything this last couple of weeks except for some mail my assistant send me. Did Mia- No she couldn't have copied my signature she is an old sweet lady.
An old sweet lady who has been abusing her helpless granddaughter for years.
"So you did not sign to take custody of Casey Olivia Rogers?" The female officer steps in.
"N- Yes I did."
I almost said no, but I want custody of Casey. If I just say yes, I'll have it right? Is it truly this simple?
He leans over the table, looking into my eyes closed before scoffing. "Take the girl away." He mumbles to his colleague who nods and is about to open the door.
"No. No please don't take her from me, I'm just trying to understand what is going on." I say, standing up and pacing around the interrogation room. I don't understand much of this situation but what I do understand is that I need to do everything in my power to keep Casey.
"Did you sign this file yes or no." The officer shouts, clearly frustrated by this situation as well.
"N-no." I answer softly.
"Okay." The officer answers, sitting down for the first time since we arrived here. He seems calmer, less annoyed.
"Her father is getting released from prison tomorrow." He starts, making my heart shatter. I'll- I'll lose her? I'm barely able to contain my tears, biting down on my lip as the officer continues.
"He was originally accused of abusing his mother, Mia. But after obtaining this new piece of information we looked over the case. Mia has been abusing her granddaughter since Casey was two years old. After her father found out, he went to defend Casey and threatened his mother. Who in her turn, got him locked up. Until now."
"So he'll take custody of Casey?" I manage to ask through my tears. The officer gives me a sympathetic look, slowly shaking his head.
"He made clear that he didn't want anything to do with Casey. According to him, prison changed him and not in a good way. He wouldn't want to put that on Casey."
"So who is going to take care of her?" I ask him utterly confused.
The two officers look at each other before the female officer approaches me and crouches down in front of me.
"We're hoping you."
