《The Millionaires Pursuit》Chapter 36

Only after Erik and Rosaline had finished eating their breakfast, did the two lovers retreat into the bedroom located upstairs, so that they could change into some warmer clothes. True to his word, Erik had organised to have snow gear purchased for him and Rosaline ahead of time. They each began by pulling on thermal t-shirts and leggings, before moving onto layering their bodies with several outer garments. Rosaline had just finished zipping up her large snow jacket when she expelled out a harsh sigh.

"Remind me again Erik why I need to be wearing five layers of clothing? I can hardly breathe with all of this material on me." She remarked in an exasperated tone.

"Because sweetheart, I don't want you catching the flu or worse. I understand it's hot inside with the heat on but trust me, you'll still be freezing once we get outside." He replied with a knowledgeable look.

"I suppose you're right." She muttered, whilst fidgeting with the zipper on her jacket.

Erik observed her strange mood and immediately crossed the room so that he could properly assess her distress.

"What's wrong?" He quietly asked her, while softly griping her chin in between his fingers.

Rosaline met Erik's gaze and gave him a saddened look before opening her delicate mouth to speak.

"There's something you should know, before we go out into the snow today." She timidly began.

"Tell me." Erik cautiously replied, whilst guiding the two of them to take a seat on the edge of the bed.

"When I was sixteen years old, my family and I went on a snow holiday together. We had so much fun skiing and sledging and drinking hot chocolate by the fire at night until one afternoon when I had an accident." Rosaline solemnly admitted.

Upon hearing her grave confession, Erik felt a knot form in his heart. He had never imagined that someone as courageous and fearless as his Rosaline had encountered an injury of any sort. She hadn't mentioned anything prior to going on this trip with him, but Erik supposed she wanted to bury her fears in the past and not allow them to get in the way of living her life to the fullest.

"It wasn't serious or anything, I hadn't broken any bones but I did experience a minor concussion which reasonably made me afraid of going out in the snow again. I still holidayed with my family every other winter, but I never had the strength to get back on my skis and ski down a mountain. I just couldn't do it and I'm not sure I'm entirely ready now either. I just though you should know that." She continued, with an obvious look of hurt across her face.

Erik didn't waste a second before placing a comforting arm around Rosaline's shoulders. She leaned into his touch, as Erik placed a loving kiss against her temple. He whispered words of affection, before pulling away from her in order to scan her eyes. Despite her words, Erik saw a woman who was a whole lot stronger than she thought she was, which was why he chose his next few words very carefully.

"Rosaline sweetheart, you're already the strongest woman I know and that is regardless of the fact that you experienced something as tragic as this. Can I ask you one thing about the incident though?" Erik mindfully asked.

"Sure." She obliged.

"Why didn't you tell me about this once we arrived in Glasslea? You know I would have changed our plans in a heartbeat if it meant you would avoid being tainted by your harmful memories." Erik kindheartedly suggested.

"I know you would have but that's exactly why I wanted to stay, to not only enjoy the trip you put together for us but to finally be able to replace those somber memories with new and exciting ones." She asserted with newfound confidence.

Erik was stunned for a brief moment before his mouth inevitably caught up with his mind so he could declare his upmost respect and love for her once again.

"How did I ever get so lucky to end up with someone as decent and good as you?" Erik asked himself, while continuing to stare at Rosaline.

"I promise you sweetheart, if there is anything you aren't comfortable with doing today I want you to tell me right away and we'll leave immediately. I don't want you putting yourself in a position that might cause you unnecessary stress, you've already been through enough." Erik sympathetically told her.

"I know that Erik and I appreciate you being so understanding about this, but I need to do this for myself. If not now then I might never overcome my fears." She insisted with a determined look.

"Alright then sweetheart, but know this, I will be right beside you ready to catch your fall, should you find yourself in a dangerous predicament." Erik bargained.

"I wouldn't have it any other way." Rosaline replied, while leaning in towards Erik to place a tender kiss against his lips.

Over the course of the next hour, Erik and Rosaline had driven towards the ski slopes and had acquired all the necessary equipment. Although Erik had somewhat interrogated Rose about going through with this, she had made it clear that she wanted to ride down a small ski slope by herself. With one final meaningful kiss shared between the lovers, Erik descended down the slopes and was currently waiting for his beloved to join him. He watched on as she stood frozen for a long minute, before ultimately taking a leap of faith and skiing down towards him. Erik couldn't wipe the triumphant smile off his face as he proudly witnessed Rosaline effortlessly ski down the slopes. It seems that in the time she didn't ski she hadn't forgotten how to manoeuvre the skis, which was precisely part of the reason why Erik was so overcome with joy. Just as Rosaline had come to a stern stop beside him, she dropped her skis in the snow and ripped off her mask before doing the same with Erik's and claiming his lips in a fierce yet passionate kiss. Erik didn't hesitate before gently stroking her slightly cold and rosy cheeks.

"I have never been more proud of you than I am now." Erik admitted, once they had parted from one another.

Rosaline seemed as equally impressed with herself yet blushed under Erik's close gaze nonetheless. She whispered a few word of gratitude before reclaiming their lips in a slow and sentimental kiss. After spending another few hours or so engaging in various snow related activities, Erik and Rosaline decided to call it a day and retreated back home where waiting for them was a cosy couch that required their upmost attention.

"I'm happy with takeout tonight if you are?" Rosaline tiredly proposed, given the long day she and Erik had spent outdoors.

"So long as you continue to stay in my arms for the rest of tonight Rose, I don't mind what we're eating." Erik earnestly replied.

With that thought in mind, Erik ordered two gourmet pizzas which were delivered in little to no time at all. He and Rosaline had enjoyed the food in front of the television, watching a cheesy romantic comedy which neither was too interested in watching. The truth was, both Erik and Rosaline were overly exhausted, both physically and emotionally with the events in which they had encountered throughout the day, which was why they found themselves retreating upstairs earlier than expected and falling asleep in the familiar warmth of each other's body.
