《The Millionaires Pursuit》Chapter 30

That same afternoon, Erik found himself driving towards Rosaline's parents home. Rosaline was seated in the passenger seat beside him and was currently directing Erik as to where he should drive. Although Erik had driven previously to Rosaline's home, he didn't bother correcting her as he was almost positive it was her nerves that were making her become forgetful. Apart from meeting her family, Erik was intrigued by the idea of seeing where Rosaline lived and perhaps even her bedroom. For a long moment, he wondered how she had decorated her room as a child and if the same patterns and furnishings still existed in the room. Had she maybe changed the colour of her walls or thrown out all the stuffed animals that children we often known to play with? Something told Erik that Rosaline's bedroom was likely to still resemble much of her childhood. He smiled at the thought and glanced over at Rosaline sitting next to him, so that he might be able to catch a glance of her everlasting beauty.

"I love you, Rose." He admitted, whilst entwining their fingers together on his lap.

"I love you too, Erik." She sweetly replied, with a beautiful smile.

Upon hearing her response, Erik returned his vision to focus on the road in front of him. It calmed him to know that their minor quarrel experienced over breakfast was for the most part behind them. The last thing Erik wanted was to have potentially met Rosaline's parents when he himself was unsure of where they stood in their relationship. Luckily, Rosaline had opened up to Erik and confessed her love for him in a way that made him not only feel assured of their commitment to one other, but it also gave him hope for a future together. Before Erik could become anymore distracted by his own thoughts, Rosaline's voice broke through the silence.

"It's just up here on the left." She indicted to a double story brick house, using her hand to point for good measure.

Erik followed her instructions and decided to park against the side curb, rather than the driveway. He didn't want to give her parents any further reasons to dislike him, even if it was in reference to something so juvenile as finding a parking spot. Stepping out of the Audi, Erik opened up the back door to retrieve the bouquet of pink flowers for Rosaline's mother and a bottle of Irish whisky for her father. He hoped the small gifts would be enough to evoke a peaceful and civil atmosphere throughout the family gathering. Clutching Rosaline's hand in his own, he offered her a bright smile before he began walking along the pavement that led towards her family home. After walking the short distance, Erik pressed his pointer finger against the doorbell and held his breath as he waited for someone to greet them. In no time at all, the front door opened and revealed a tall, thin man with dark brown hair that was matted with flecks of grey. Immediately, Erik knew this man was Rosaline's father and probably the most important person he had to try and impress for the sake of Rose.

"Afternoon Rosaline, please come inside the both of you." The older gentleman spoke, before stepping aside to allow Erik and Rose to enter inside.

Once inside their family home, Erik watched as Rose gently hugged her father and placed a loving kiss against his cheek. She then turned towards Erik and motioned towards him whilst speaking with a proud, yet small smile etched onto her face.

"Dad, this is Erik Silverstein my boyfriend. I've wanted you both to meet for a long time now."

"No time better than the present I suppose. I've been anxiously waiting to meet you myself Erik, my name is Conrad Covault." He introduced himself with a firm shake.

Erik gripped the older mans hand and returned the welcoming gesture with gusto. He smiled politely and offered him the bottle of whisky, just as he and Rosaline were asked to join him in meeting the rest of the family. So far, Erik was feeling particularly calm and relaxed. Rosaline's father hadn't been obnoxious or cruel in anyway and instead seemed rather friendly. Of course, they had merely exchanged pleasantries so anything was still likely to happen. Having walked through a long and narrow entryway, the three of them finally found themselves in the company of a room full of people. Sitting around a large, wooden table were the other members of Rosaline's family. In quickly scanning the guests, Erik's eyes landed on a petite woman whose eyes were already focused in on him. She didn't smile, nor speak but merely stood from her chair and approached Erik with an air of confidence and judgment.

"You must be Erik, I take it? I'm Iris Covault, Rosaline's mother." She introduced herself, whilst keeping a strict eye on him.

"It's lovely to finally meet you Mrs. Covault. Rosaline has told me such beautiful things about you." Erik charmingly replied, while handing her the flowers.

"I'm sure she has." Iris replied unconvincingly, before shuffling to move the flowers out of sight.

Meanwhile, Rosaline's brothers were silently observing the interaction between Erik and their mother from the dining room table. They were both forewarned about acting judgmental or critical, however after seeing Erik for the first time, both brothers couldn't help but telepathically agree that they sensed trouble. Nevertheless, they both stood to greet Erik, just as their mother left his side.

"Good to meet you, I'm Nickolas and this here is William." The eldest Covault brother introduced the three men, before offering Erik a seat at the dining table.

Erik kindly accepted Nickolas's offer, but not before sending Rosaline a sweet smile from across the room. He knew that she was probably feeling more tense than he was at the current moment, but thought that perhaps by smiling her way he would help to ease her worries. His heart warmed when he saw her smile bashfully in return, however his own smile was soon wiped clean off his face when he saw the look of distaste on William's face. Rosaline's younger brother was clearly unimpressed by their tender exchange, even if it were only an innocent smile. Of course, Erik knew only too well what her brother was probably thinking about with what likely went on between Erik and Rosaline when nobody was around to witness their affections. The notion must have suddenly entered in though William's mind as Erik noted his sour expression. Just as Erik was about to start praising Rosaline for the exceptional woman she is, in front of her brothers no less, the eldest Covault brother suddenly spoke up. What Erik hadn't anticipated however, was the amount of venom that dripped from each word. In that moment, Erik knew nothing could have prepared him for what was yet to come.

"I must admit Erik, when my sister first told me she was dating a thirty-five year old millionaire I wasn't sure I quite believed her. But now that we've officially met, I guess the only question that I care to understand is why a man of your caliber would want anything to do with her. So tell us, what is it exactly that you want with our Rosaline?"
