《The Player Broke My Leg》Chapter 6

"Female Caucasian, approximately seventeen years of age," said the female paramedic as they rolled Hattie through the emergency room doors. I was rushing along side them and my eyes never left Hattie. "Broken tibia, possible concussion, and a shallow laceration on the left arm."
"Is she going to be okay?" I asked as I held onto the railing of the stretcher.
"We're going to do the best we can," said one of the nurses as she glanced at me. "You're gonna have to stay in the waiting room."
"What?" I asked in disbelief. "No, I'm going with Hattie. I have to be there."
"Sir, listen. The doctors are going to do what they need to," she says as she stops me from walking any farther. My hand slips off the cool metal and I watch as they all go through a set of double doors. "Why don't you just go have a seat. One of the nurses will bring you out some paperwork that you can fill out for your friend. Is there anyone you can call?"
I nod my head. "Yeah."
"Alright," she says as she gives me a warm smile. "I'll let you know when there's an update.'
I walk over to the waiting room area and find it completely empty. My hand was shaking as I pulled out my phone. There were multiple text and calls from the guys from the lacrosse team asking where I was, but I ignored them.
I clicked 'Elenore Page' and immediately braced for her to yell at me, but her phone went straight to voicemail. I tried a dozen times, but nothing.
"Elenore," I said with a shaky voice. "When you get this, call me back. Something happened to Hattie and you should come to the hospital when you hear this."
I hang up the phone and let out a sigh. Since her mom didn't answer, I wasn't sure if I should call her dad or not. He was still her father and maybe he'd know how to get a hold of Elenore, but I decided against it.
I dialed my mom's number, hoping she would answer. On the third ring, there was an answer.
"Hey sweetie. Did you just leave?" She asked as she referred to the trip.
"No," I say as I tried to keep my voice steady. "I'm at the hospital right now. Hattie..." I try to say, but I hesitate.

"What happened to Hattie?" She suddenly asked with a voice full of worry.
"She had an accident," I tell her. "I tried calling her mom but she's not answering. I don't know what to do mom."
"Well her mom is on her way to Italy right now," she says. I could her her moving frantically from my end of the phone. "I'm leaving work now, okay? I'll try to get there as fast as I can."
"Thanks Mom," I say as I hang up the phone and place my head in my hands.

The sound of beeping caused me to wake up, which was strange. There was nothing in my bedroom to make that sound.
When my eyes opened, everything was blurry and spinning slightly. I groaned as I tried to sit up, but a sudden sharp pain caused my to cry out slightly.
"Hattie, don't move, okay," I heard a voice say. I looked my side and see Emily standing next to me. She had a soothing hand on my shoulder that calmed me.
"We're am I?" I asked as I looked around.
"The hospital," she tells me as she brushed the stray hairs off my face. "Do you remember what happened?"
I thought about it for a moment, and nothing came to me. "No."
Emily nodded. "You fell out the window, remember?"
"The window," I said to myself, and everything came rushing back to me. "That jerk."
"Jerk? Who are you talking about?" Emily asked.
"Jasper. This is all his fault. If he hadn't broke into my room and stole my stuff, I wouldn't be here right now," I say a I push myself up while ignoring the pain.
"He did what?" Emily asked in confusion.
"He broke into my room, stole my underwear, and threatened to take it to the lake with him," I tell her.
"Are you serious?" Emily asked me.
"Yeah. He recorded it all on his phone," I explain to her. "He has been constantly harassing me since the day you guys moved in. There's even videos on YouTube of it if you don't believe me."
"Okay, okay. Settle down Hattie. I believe you," she says. "Try not to move. Your leg is broken. The doctors just reset it and they'll be here soon to put a cast on."

"Broken?" I questioned as I look down at my leg. Sure enough, it was placed on top of pillows and was all black and blue. "Does my mom know?"
"No sweetie, she's still on the plane. We probably won't hear from her until tomorrow," Emily says as she pulls a chair up to the bed and sits. "Do you want me to call your dad?"
"No," I say quickly. The last thing I wanted was for him to have a excuse to weasel himself back into my life. "I don't want him here."
Emily let out a sigh of relief. "Good because I don't have his number."
"That's reasonable," I tell her with a chuckle as I look down at my leg. "There goes my plan for getting a full body tan this summer."
"I'm sorry, sweetie," Emily apologized.
"Don't be. Now I have an excuse not to do any physical activities," I say with a laugh, a laugh that was cut off short when the door opened.
Jasper stood my the door with a cup of coffee in his hand. His eyes widen when he saw I was awake. I didn't want to look at him, so I focused my eyes on my leg. Emily seemed to notice the tension shift in the room.
"Hey, Jasper," Emily says as she turns to face him. "Can I see your phone for a minute? Mine died and I need to call your dad."
"Yeah," he says as he walked over with his hand in his pocket. Jasper handed her his unlocked phone with a smile before taking a sip of his coffee.
"Thanks," Emily says as she looks at me and gives me a quick wink. I didn't know what she was up too, but after a few taps on the phone it all fell into place.
"Prank time," rang clearly from the phone, causing Jasper to immediately choke on his coffee.
"Mom? What are you doing?" Jasper demanded as he tried to grab his phone back.
"What I need to," she snapped as she smacked his hand away. "Now you go stand in the corner unless you want to tell me about this video."
Jasper stood there with his mouth wide open in shock. His eyes darted from his mom to me as if he was trying to figure out what to say to get him out of this mess. I couldn't help but to bite my cheek and smile. After all these years, Jasper is finally going to get his.
"That's what I thought," Emily said as she went back to the video. As she watched, I kept my eyes on Jasper. All the blood drained from his face.
At the point where I fell in the video, Emily gasped and covered her mouth. She immediately put the phone down and stood up in front of Jasper. Emily was around my height, so her neck was craned upwards to look at Jasper. Jasper, though, was looking at the ground so he would meet his mother's eyes.
"I am very disappointed in you. Do you realize what you have even done?" She scolded him as she motioned towards me. "Hattie could have died. Do you realize that?"
"I'm sorry," Jasper said to her, but still refused to look at his mom.
"I am not the one you should be apologizing to. Hattie is the one you should be saying that too," Emily says roughly as she grabbed him by the chin to meet her gaze. "Look at her. She's in the hospital because of you. How does that make you feel knowing that you caused this?"
"Mom, please-," Jasper tried to beg but she cut him off.
"Your father and I will talk about a punishment for you. Until then, you are grounded. That means no phone, no video games, no computer, no television, and sure as hell no lake."
"But the guys are expecting me to be up there tonight," Jasper countered.
"That's too bad," Emily said to him. I had to keep myself from laughing at Jasper, and that was hard work. "Hattie and Elenore have been nothing but good to us since the day we moved in, and this is how you repay them."
Jasper remained silent. He knew it was over and that he was caught. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door and a woman probably in herb early fifties entered the room.
"Hello, I'm Doctor Braxy. Are you ready to get your cast?" She asked with a warm smile.
"Um...sure," I say as I smile back, but only one thought ran through my head.
This was going to hurt.
