《How to Write Stories People Will Love》33. Develop Your Characters
Advertisement
, a loyal follower, recently asked me: "How do we design and develop characters, and sort out their personalities? What's the best way to understand our characters?"
When we don't project a character's personality onto a page, they seem like flat, forgettable, two-dimensional people. This might happen if you don't have a solid grasp of who your characters are and what they're like. So how do you do that? Here are a few ideas...
When you create a character using the personality of a friend or relative, you already understand what this person is like. You can predict their reactions and you won't have to rely that much on imagination to write them. Just make sure to you use a different name, haha!
Movies are full of well-rounded characters that seem real to us. Maybe you could borrow one. Someone else has already done the work for you. All you need to do is be consistent, and stay true to that personality.
You could take certain personality traits from different people and mesh them into one character. For example, maybe the character is charming and fearless like Han Solo, but curses a lot like Detective Morgan from the show Dexter.
If you do a search for "Meyers Briggs personality types", you'll discover a test you can take to determine one of sixteen personality types. A lot of writers like to use this as a base for developing their characters.
Do a search for "character development sheet" and you'll see numerous results. These worksheets make you answer questions about your character that help you figure out this person's personality. Try one!
Step into your character's shoes and start a stream of consciousness. Just start writing random thoughts while pretending to be that character. This won't go into your story, but will help you get into the role. I'll make one up right now, as an example:

I can't believe she said that. I mean, sure, there's a hole in my shoes and maybe they're a little scuffed, but I like them that way. It means they're comfortable. Okay, maybe sometimes dirt rolls into the shoe through the hole, and my socks get dirty. Oh man, I hate dirty socks. Which reminds me, I need to ask Mom to get me more socks. Then again... she's gonna tell me to throw away these shoes. Dammit. Maybe I should get my own socks...
There's really no point to these ramblings other than to get your brain to focus on who this character is and how she thinks. Do as much or as little of it as you like without worrying if it's any good, because it's not going into the story.

Small Chests Are Fine Too
It is an undeniable fact that good things come in small packages. More often than not, it is necessary to trim the fat in order to bring what really matters to the forefront. Having extra bulk may seem like a good idea, but in reality it is merely a crutch that will one day become a hindrance, as it is no substitute for personality nor ability. Indeed, often times it is the small things in life that brighten up our daily lives and constantly remind us exactly why we do the things we do. However, it is important to keep an open mind, for while bigger is not always better, there are also times when it is. This holds especially true when it comes to hopes and dreams, which have been known to require a suitably large container from time to time. And while dreaming big could potentially lead to massive dissapointment, one will never truly reach fulfilment if they think too small. A truth that one small woman with meager aspirations is about to find out. DISCLAIMER: This is a spin-off/side story of my main series, Everybody Loves Large Chests, which is also mandatory reading to understand this one. It runs parallel to the main plot, branching off from the chapter titled Upheaval 2, so there will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't reached that point.

Penance's Pursuit
This future sci-fi fantasy follows the progression of a few main characters as they navigate their unique spheres of life in the year 2242. The story focuses heavily on themes of guilt, personal failing, and penance. The conflict revolves around two main concepts: Man vs. Himself (Internal conflict) and Man vs Man (External conflict). The internal conflicts focus on many of the characters' inner demons and how each of them deal with the scars of the past. The external conflict centers around a mysterious criminal organization called Nexus that conducts human trafficking. There are three groups of main characters. The first group belong to a vigilante mercenary organization called Ab Aeterno. Titus, Venna, and Benjamin are Achilles team. This team is a part of Ab Aeterno's special forces branch which is designated Demon Stalkers. Their goal and mission is to perform assassinations, abductions, and destabilization operations on criminal organizations throughout the solar system. Their current mission places them directly in the path of Nexus. Titus interacted with them in his past and they seem to have unlimited reach, resources, and power. As the team faces this threat, old wounds will surface and dangerous connections to the past will emerge. The second group of characters are on the Mars colony. Randal Page is an analyst for a talent scout company on Mars. He is faced with the reality that the company he thought he was working for is in fact Nexus. His story centers around his coming to realize the duplicity of the company he works for and then his response to the startling realization of his own ignorant involvement. Also on Mars is a woman named FaRarra Njokko. She is a Nexus sex slave in a brothel on Mars and is known by the stage name of Stardust. She is striving to escape when her path crosses with Randal. The final main character is Preston Coretel. He is a monk with a mysterious and shady past. He is on the run from Nexus in more ways than one. He is seeking sanctuary on an abandoned monastery space station in order to avoid agents of Nexus and to atone for his previous involvement with Nexus.

SuperTraveler: Lost in Another World
Rejected by his world, a mulleted teen who lives his life as a caricature of his old man's glory days is forced to take care of a dragon's princess. These two normal people, at least normal unto their respective worlds, struggle to cope with becoming the monsters that a bunch of mad gods need them to be. Do they side with the insane god escaping the organic clockwork of Death, the god who wants to destroy that evil, or perhaps, a third option? Content Warning: This will depict substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, and will likely become an ongoing list of content advisories. This is going to be an adventure-centric story, not a battle fantasy. It's got elements of LitRPG and standard isekai, but not for the MC. He's got a different path to follow, one without power-leveling and harems.
