《How to Write Stories People Will Love》24. Read Big Magic

Very few things rock my world when I read them. Most of the time, when I read something inspirational, I'm like, "Okay, that's nice. What's next?"
One day, when I was wrestling with self-doubt and bemoaning the sad state of my creativity, someone suggested I read Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, by Elizabeth Gilbert. I said okay, and found it at the local library, not expecting much.
In short, it blew me away. Blew. Me. Away. This book completely upended the way I look at my writing. I was gunning hard at traditional publishing and stressing myself out, thinking if I didn't get a publisher, then my writing was worthless.
If you're a victim of this way of thinking, if you believe that your writing is only as good as the number of readers you have, then pay attention: You are placing a needless burden on your writing. Whenever we place such critical expectations on our writing, our creativity takes a hit. Muses are flighty things that come and go as they please, and they definitely do not like stressful environments. It's not about what writing can get you, it's about how writing makes you feel.
This literally changed my life. I stopped participating in pitch contests, which were distracting me from actually writing. (Pitch contests involve trying to convince agents to read your story, and possibly represent you.) I stopped researching agents (again, distracting me from writing). I stopped worrying over whether my manuscript was good enough. Because in this context, "good enough" varies from agent to agent, and your focus starts straying away from what was originally good enough for you.
This is just a small tidbit of what this book taught me. There is so much more. It was because of Big Magic that I joined Wattpad, for a more relaxed venue to share my work. I no longer stress out when I can't get my story right. I'll be sad about it, sure, but like all skills--including art--I know I'll get better with practice.

Big Magic inspired a lot of the "chicken soup" portions of "How To Write Stories People Will Love". I try to share its wisdom because I think it's important to remember why we write. To not let writing become this monster that haunts you. To avoid writing as a source of frustration, fear, or depression. We are writers. So let go of the expectations. Let go of "is it good enough", and just write. Find your voice. Find your joy.
Write because you love it.

Long War [Oldest]
It was a war. It was silent, so silent that few people ever noticed that it was happening, and long. So long that those who knew forgot why it ever started. Humanity had fought against itself... and lost. Prosperity, democracy and human rights were a thing of the past now, as the world fell into Sovereigns's hands - a handful of transnational corporations (and their CEOs) that monopolized the world economy. The resistance had been long silenced with the policy of bread and games. Now, over a hundred years later, something happened. One of the Sovereigns created a VRMMORPG like none other. A science fiction game, where players could explore the Galaxy... full of advanced technologies, bloodthirsty aliens and even magic. Was it a simple computer game, or... something else?

Villain as a Friend
What if your friend says that he wants to be a villain? Will you prevent your friend from falling into the circle of evil, or encourage him to do that? "I want to be a villain." My friend who has been accompanying me every day in my life said that. Only a few days after the launching of Realm Domination, a new VRMMORPG. At first, I thought he said that because he wanted to do role-playing in the game. But I didn't think he would truly be one of them. Become a real villain. He did some crimes like burning the village, murdering the whole cities, raping the women inside the elf forest, and do some massive magic sacrifice that needs mass murdering. Even if it's only in the game, I become to know my friend's true face is. I let him be for now because it's still inside a game. But it turned out to be worse than I thought.

Blurred Lines and What Crosses Them
During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
