A flicker of confusion passes Jake's face, but he soon covers it with a polite smile. "Jake Fletcher, ma'am." He moves all three drinks to one hand so he can shake my mums.

"Lovely to meet you, Jake. Are you one of Amber's friends?"

I cringe, "Something like that." He responds.

I pass the drinks out, keeping hold of my own blue slush. "Hey Amber, can I talk to you a sec." Jake says. I nod and follow him. He walks around the pool and stops on the other side, me close behind him.

"Funny how your mum can speak perfect, fluent English, whilst you struggle to form a sentence isn't it?"

I cringe and hang my head, "Sorry."

He nods, "Well, guess I'll have to do this again." He shoves me into the pool.

But this time, I see it coming. I grab one of his wrists and pull him in with me.

We both go into the pool at the same time.

"You really need to stop doing that." I say punching his shoulder.

"It's so weird hearing you speak English."

"Well, don't get used to it."

"Oh yeah, why's that?"

"Because you're going to leave me alone."

"Wouldn't be so sure about that."

I sigh in frustration and leave the pool. Stupid boys with their perfect smiles, and their great bodies.

I hear him jogging up behind me. "So, is your name actually Amber?"

"Yes."

"Are you my age? 17?"

"Yes."

"You like swimming right?"

"Yes."

"You're on the top floor, same as me?"

"Yes."

"You like blue slushes?"

"Yes."

"What's your favourite colour?" I stop abruptly, making Jake nearly walk into me, and turn around to face him, not accounting for how close that would make us. I swallow, and try to ignore the fact I could feel his breath on my face.

"What are you doing?"

"Trying to get to know you."

"Why?"

He shrugs, "Because I want to."

"Well, we don't always get what we want."

"I'm quite good at getting what I want."

"Do you realise how much of a prick that sentence made you sound."

"You're right, it sounded better in my head, but that's beside the point."

"What is the point?"

"That I want to get to know you."

"I figured. I just don't get why."

His smirk fades and he looks out over the hotel. "This holiday might not be as mind-numbingly boring if I have someone to hang out with."

"Look around," I gesture around us, "there are plenty of other people you can hang out with."

"You kind of chose yourself as soon as you spilt your drink on me."

"My God, it was an accident."

"Then I guess fate chose you." He holds his hands up. "Nothing to do with me."

I roll my eyes, turn back around and begin to walk back to my family.

I'm about to sit on my sunbed when an arm comes around my shoulder.

My mum looks up and smiles at me, and who I presume is Jake stood behind me.

"Hey Mrs..."

"Bloom." My mum fills in.

"Mrs Bloom! Lovely to see you again, do you mind if I steal Amber from you for a while."

My mum's smile brightens; clearly delighted I've made a 'friend' and obviously choosing to ignore my scowl. "Of course! No problem." My mum winks at me and I look over to see my nana and grandad beaming. I flush bright red, happy my dad has chosen to stay quiet, I don't know how much more embarrassment I can take.

"Thanks Mrs Bloom!" Jake steers us both away from them and waves at my mum.

"What the hell was that?" I say as soon as we're out of earshot, shoving his arm from my shoulders.

"It was me getting what I wanted using my incredible charm and irresistible good looks."

I scoff and follow him as he leads me to the arcade.
