Last time on Blind Hope
Blake looked down at the ground, bouncing on his toes. Why was he standing there? Oh, right. He was going to wait for Vivian. That seemed like so far away now. "Do you want to go somewhere, or?"
"No. I was just going to walk around." Hope started to move away slowly, but stopped, turning around.
"You hurt her, and I'll hurt you." Blake didn't bother responding because Hope had already started to walk away.
~~~~~~~~~~
Hope managed to find her way to a couch and sat down, curling her legs underneath her. She could smell people walking by her and closed her eyes, leaning backwards. She needed to get used to the sounds and sights of the people. It wasn't like she could go home.
Why can't I go home?
Our parents don't want us, remember?
Yes, but... Viv acted like there was something else... Hope's brows scrunched together as she dove back into her memories. There was something there, but she couldn't remember it...
"WATCH IT, MORON!!" Someone shouted. Hope dove off the couch and hit the floor, covering her ears. No one payed attention to her. "CAN'T YOU SEE I'M WALKING HERE?"
"Oh yeah!? Well how about NOT EYEING MY MATE!?" Hope shivered at the malice in the two voices and remained hidden behind the couch. She tried to move, but her leg hit the table, and suddenly memories started to come back to her.
"Eyeing your mate!? I have my own mate WHO ISN'T A HAG!"
Glass shattered everywhere in Hope's mind, all the wounds that had healed coming back as if they'd never left.
"HOW DARE YOU--"
Bruce's screaming, angry voice flashed back.
"NO, HOW DARE--"
Breathing was labored.
"YOU LOOK LIKE A MONKEY--"
World spinning.
"SHE LOOKS LIKE A HIPPO!"
Blackness.
"Gasp!"
"You don't say 'gasp,' idiot!"
"Knock it off!" Blake shouted, looking around the room. Quite the crowd had gathered to hear the two idiot wolves fight. Some had popcorn. Others were laughing. No one noticed Hope, passed out in the corner. "What's going on here?"
"He was eyeing my mate, Alpha."
"Was not!" The two wolves started bickering again, and Blake growled, shutting them up.
"Take your stupid fights outside or better, just don't have stupid fights. And for heaven's sake, mates don't eye other mates, Johnson." Everyone disbursed, still giggling. "Has anyone seen Hope?" Everyone looked around in confusion, the name unfamiliar to them. "Never mind." Blake looked around the room and saw a pale hand lying on the ground beside the couch. "Ah, crap." He rushed over and picked Hope up. Several gasped, looking on curiously. "This is your Luna's blind sister, Hope! How did none of you notice her!?" Blake took off running for the hospital.
Charles, bring Vivian to the hospital.
What's wrong!?
Just do it! Blake snapped, looking down at Hope. He'd promised Vivian he'd also watch out for her, but the moment she stepped away, Hope was unconscious. Hope groaned right as they reached the hospital.
"Ah, ouch." Her arms wrapped around Blake and she looked around desperately. "Where am I?"
"You passed out. I'm taking you to the doctor." Hope groaned and shook her head, struggling to get out of his hold.
"No. No, I'm fine." Blake maintained a firm grip and let the doctor's take Hope from him.
"What's wrong, Alpha? Is this the new Luna I've been hearing about?"
"She is not!" Vivian snapped, panting as she wrapped her arm around Blake. "I'm the Luna, and she's my sister." Blake grinned down at Vivian's jealousy, but Vivian refused to acknowledge him. Blake chuckled to himself. The doctor nodded and gave apologizes as he took Hope to an open room.
"Well, on first glance, nothing's wrong."
"Thank you, doctor." Hope smiled in his general direction and motioned to herself. "Nothing wrong."
"But, of course, I've yet to examine your insides." The doctor looked between a glaring Luna and a glaring patient and swallowed hard. Just who had the authority here?
"I want to leave." Hope said sternly, standing. "I simply relieved a bad memory, or rather... had them come back... I'm fine." Blake breathed out and nodded. Vivian looked at him in disbelief, but then the doctor nodded as well.
"Sorry, Luna. It's the patient's treatment..." He left before anyone could get angry at him. Hope looked down at the ground. Blake kissed Vivian's forehead, and she leaned into his touch. He left the room and Vivian crossed her arms.
"Hope, you passed out."
"Bruce pushed me into a table, and Emily defended me. What is going on with my family?!" Vivian realized immediately what had happened and sat beside Hope. "And they killed your parents! I'm so sorry..." Hope sobbed and leaned into Vivian. "I'm so sorry."
Vivian gently stroked Hope's hair as they rocked back and forth. Tears fell down Vivian's cheeks as she slowly urged Hope to sleep. Vivian closed her eyes and sighed. People said Hope held her back. People said Hope was a burden. People said a lot of things. But she couldn't bring it in herself to hold any of it against Hope. Because at the end of the day, Hope would be there for her even if it cost her life. "Everything will work out. Just hold on a little longer, Hope."
~~~~~~~~~~
Blake sat at his desk going over some paperwork when Charles walked into the room. "Hey. I heard Vivian had a run-in with Rachel? I heard it might be a little rocky on that front?" He seemed nervous.
"I don't think. They'll come around." Charles nodded, but he looked skeptical.
"Right." He sat down and put his feet up on Blake's desk. Blake looked up out of the top of his glasses and raised an eyebrow. Charles just grinned and locked his hands behind his head. "This is nice."
"You know what else is nice-" Blake began, glaring. Vivian walked into the room and nodded at Charles.
"Hey." She looked at his feet and then back at him. He grinned back at her. Vivian scoffed and went to Blake. "I took Hope back to her room." Her eyes locked with Blake's. "Has anyone ever said that you're handsome in glasses?"
"PDA!"
"Charles, we didn't do anything." Vivian laughed and set on Blake's lap. He inhaled sharply as Vivian settled into him. She knew exactly what she was doing and was loving teasing him. "So what were we talking about?"
"The King," Blake cleared his throat and focused on anything other than the closeness of Vivian to his nether regions. "He always goes around once a year and checks up on the packs personally. It's that time of year, and we expect him tomorrow, actually." Vivian rubbed her fingers through his hair. "And, um. I was just thinking that, um. ooh."
Charles burst into laughter and fell out of his chair. "Ooh," he mimicked. "Can you hear yourself!?" Vivian giggled and lay her head on Blake's shoulder.
"What is it, Blakey?"
"I was thinking," he continued, clearing his throat and ignoring his Beta rolling on the floor. "I was thinking we could use this time to make Hope's situation known." Everyone stopped messing around, and looked at Blake. "There would be no better time." Vivian nodded.
"Yeah. That would be best," she responded softly.
Charles eventually left, but not before teasing Blake mercilessly. Blake finished up his duties and carried Vivian to their bed. He gently brushed her hair out of her face, and kissed her nose. "Night, my angel."

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
