《Jay Halstead x Reader Story/Imagine》(55. Ties that bind)

I was back at work today and more determined than ever to have a longer working streak this time since I had the worst luck with injuries and being forced to take time off. It was a good day to get back, Hank had planned a sting to try to bust a gun runner, and Kim and Adam were going undercover to try to make a deal.

We all suited up and drove to a warehouse where the whole thing was going to go down. Kim and Adam drove to the front while the rest of us stayed out back in case things went south and they needed back up.

The room was completely silent as the bust was starting, we were all listening in through the mics. It seemed like everything was going well until there was contact from the buyer wanting to search Kim and Adam for weapons.

"He felt my vest." We heard Kim through the mic.

I gripped my gun a little tighter ready for some action, a tingle ran through my body, I'd been away from this for too long, a part of me embarrassed to admit that I loved the thrill of this. Just as Adam gave us the go-ahead to move we heard gunshots.

We all took cover as we watched Davis open fire on Kim and Adam but the action didn't last much as Jay was easily able to get a shot and soon after we were already packing up to head back to the precinct.

Although I enjoyed being able to get a few shots in I had to admit that I still had that urge for more action, I wanted to get my hands dirty.

____

I was stripping off my vest at the back of the car when Jay came to join me. "You alright?" I asked.

"Yeah, you?" He helped me with some of the straps.

"Yeah, didn't realize how much I missed this. I don't know if that makes me a good cop or a psycho." I shrugged. I knew Jay wouldn't judge me.

He laughed. "I get it, we wanted the job for a reason, and I know damn well it wasn't to sit around and eat donuts as we're beautifully portrayed in movies." We packed the last few things in the trunk and he shut it.

I nodded in agreement as we got in the car. I drove us back to the district.

Back at the precinct, we tried getting some more information about the guns, and the runner. Jay was able to find a gun show where Davis might have purchased the guns from and there was another gun show soon so that was our main lead for now.

Hank assigned Jay and Kim to go undercover at the show, Hailey and I would stay close by as an extra pair of eyes on the outside and the rest of the team would park further away just listening in.

____

From the outside things were looking good, nothing was out of the ordinary and it seemed as though Kim and Jay had everything under control inside.

Kim made contact with two men who caught Jay's attention. "I want 10 pieces but I need to see the merchandise." Kim was very convincing.

"Alright, they're out back." One of the men spoke.

I had a bad feeling about this but I trusted Kim and I was going to let her play this out. I could hear Jay was chatting with a security guard.

"I'm gonna move, it'll look suspicious if we're both standing here," I told Hailey before Kim walked out with the suspects.

Hailey nodded. I made some distance, standing in an alley and putting my phone to my ear pretending to be distracted in a heated discussion with an imaginary person at the other end of the phone.

I kept a discrete eye on Kim as she walked, followed by two men. I could see the men getting suspicious of Hailey. Kim played it cool, calling Hailey over and now Hailey had joined them in going outback.

I moved again trying to get a better view of them. There was a truck and the girls were waiting. In a matter of seconds, the girls were held at gunpoint and shoved in the back of the truck, the men driving off quickly.

"BURGESS AND UPTON HAVE BEEN TAKEN!" I quickly yelled into my mic as I drew my gun trying to get a shot at the vehicle.

I saw Jay and Kevin running out back but I knew it was no use, I ran back to the car quickly, getting in and driving towards where I saw the truck drive off to. The tires screeched as I took a sharp turn.

"y/n what are you doing?!" I heard Jay in my ear but the sound was cut off as the distance became larger.

I took out my phone and speed-dialed Voight as I managed to catch up to the truck. "You got eyes on the truck?" He asked.

"I'm on them Sarge, it's got no plates but they'll catch on eventually they're taking a lot of turns," I spoke back keeping my eyes on the road.

"Alright, we'll track your phone, stay on them but if you see them grow suspicious drive away, we need to keep the girls safe." He instructed me.

"Copy that." I hung up.

The men took a lot of turns but eventually found their way onto quite a lonely highway surrounded by trees. I knew that they'd figure out I was following them pretty soon and if they decided to stop there was nothing I'd be able to do except keep driving.

It felt like I was behind them for forever until eventually, they came to a halt on a patch of grass on the side of the road. I knew that now I had to keep on driving or I would put the girls in more danger.

I kept my eyes forward as I drove past the car, only able to take in a few features of the men and see Hailey and Kim shoot me a pleading look.

The road was flat so I would have to keep on driving for a while in order for me to disappear out of sight and for the men to drop their suspicions. After covering some distance I noticed an almost hidden road to the right, and I decided to take it. I took out my phone to call Hank but there was no signal. "Sh*t" I cursed to myself.

I wasn't sure what to do anymore, the men could have gotten back into the car and kept driving and would soon catch up to me and realize I was onto them, or they had stayed back and decided to rough up Kim and Hailey right there and then. I didn't have more time to think before I heard a car approaching. In a split-second decision, I reversed my car deep into the trees.

A couple of seconds later I watched as the car Hailey and Kim were in drove past and only a few meters away turned into the woods to the right. They hadn't seen me but luckily now I had a rough idea of where they were going to land.

I couldn't take the car, it would make too much noise and alert the men of my presence. I grabbed my gun and a pocket knife that I tucked into the back of my jeans. I walked into the woods quietly but quickly in the direction I saw the car drive to.

____

Finding Hailey and Kim was proving harder than expected. It looked as though these two guys at the gun show were completely off the grid. But what had me even more worried was that we hadn't heard anything from y/n after the signal in her phone went out far into a secluded highway.

For all I knew she could've been spotted by the men and being held hostage...again. I was all too familiar with this feeling, but it seemed like each time it got even worse. One of these days our luck was bound to run out, I gripped the small box in my jacket a little tighter.

I tried keeping my emotions in check, I trusted her, she could handle herself, she was smart and she would find a way to get the girls to safety. Adam got a call from Kim, asking for money, we knew the guys were still with them.

It looked like we had a lead but something told me that we were a long way away from getting to the girls.

_______

I walked quite a good while into the woods, I used my knife to carve crosses on trees here and there for the team once they were able to locate us. Just as I was losing hope of finding any signs I heard two male voices, arguing. I picked up my pace still making sure I was being as silent as possible.

I was able to make out a small cabin and two men by the front door. I hid behind a tree out of sight but was able to peek to have a good look at what I was dealing with. I could see two windows leading to a basement and I was almost certain there was no one else in the cabin except the two men outside.

I scoped out the area for a while. I saw there was a small hut beside the cabin, there was wood, lighter fluid, and matches.

One of the men eventually drove away, I waited for silence before I ran towards the house, avoiding the windows. I got low on the ground and took a peek through the basement windows, Kim and Hailey were both tied to separate poles in thick chains. Hailey looked busted up.

I tapped on the window silently to alert them of my presence and I saw Kim's face light up. I brought my index finger up to my lip. 'Where's the man?" I mouthed.

Kim signaled to her ear and the door. He was coming back. I watched as the door opened and I hid quickly. I peeked again. I gestured for Kim to create a distraction while I went out front. I knew that I wouldn't get another opportunity like this, and between the three of us, I knew we could take this guy.

I grabbed the lighter fluid and doused the hut, then took a match and dropped it inside the hut. It started burning. This would be enough for the team to see us if it didn't burn us all down.

I quietly made my way around the house and to the front door which to my luck was ajar. I slipped through, I walked down the hallway trying to be as silent as possible. I saw the basement door. I took a deep breath.

The guy's back was to me. I pointed my gun directly at his head. "CHICAGO PD PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" I yelled.

It took me by surprise as the guy turned grabbed the gun and pulled me down the stairs before I could shoot.

We wrestled, he managed to get a few punches, across my face and to my sides. He was trying to take a hold of the gun but I kept a tight grip on it. "KIM MY BACK!" I tried alerting Kim of the knife.

Luckily I was close enough and she was able to slip the knife out of my jeans while I kept fighting with the guy. I threw the gun to the opposite side of the room and I was able to throw a hard kick at the man's crotch sending him backward. Hailey tripped him with her legs and used them to hold him in a headlock.

At the same time, Kim had picked up my gun and pointed it at the man. Hailey wouldn't release him though.

"HAILEY LET GO! I GOT HIM!" Kim repeated a couple of times until Hailey finally did. I would've helped Kim except for the fact that I was still winded from the punches I took.

____

The team had come into the house. Antonio cuffed the man and led him outside, Adam and Jay then ran in through the door. Kim was cutting Hailey free while I tried catching my breath.

"You okay?" Jay basically skipped all the steps as he made his way to me.

"I'm fine, you should've seen the other guy." I tried to laugh it off but it hurt to laugh.

"I did. C, mon." Jay couldn't help but smile. He put his hands on my hips and helped me up.

"How did you find us?" Hailey asked Adam.

"There were some crosses on the trees-" Adam started.

"Oh good, you saw those." I panted as I straightened up.

"And then we saw the smoke, was that you too?" Adam smiled at me.

"Yeah." I laughed.

"Thank you." Kim squeezed my hand.

"Sorry I didn't come sooner." I did feel bad for the way Hailey had taken a beating, Adam scanning her injuries.

"Hey, you saved us, he would've killed us." Hailey shot me a grateful look. I nodded forcing a smile.

______

Jay helped me up the stairs and to his car. I took a seat on the back seat while Jay grabbed a cloth and cleaned up some blood on my lip. He ran his fingers through my hair and his fingers ran over the swollen spots on my face very softly, I saw the pain in his eyes as he did.

"Hey, this is the job we signed up for right." I winked.

"Right, but this part will never get any easier." He cupped my cheek.

"I promise I'm okay." I took his hand off my cheek and kissed his palm.

"I forgot to give you this, I was supposed to give it to you this morning but I forgot." he pulled out a small box from his glove compartment.

I furrowed my brows confused. I opened the box and I saw a beautiful cross necklace.

"Jay it's beautiful." I admired the necklace.

"I just thought, with your luck, I guess it could give me some peace of mind to feel like you've got someone looking over you all the time. I know it's silly but-"

"No it's not, thank you, I love it." I got up pulling him by his jacket closer to me. He leaned down to kiss me.

"I mean I did kind of put a tracker on it so..." He started joking making me laugh.

"That might not actually be a bad idea," I admitted and he laughed with me.

"Yeah well don't tempt me." He hugged me closer to him as if he would lose me if he let go.

We stayed like that for a couple of minutes until Hank told us to wrap up and head back to the precinct. Yes, our job was crazy, it was hard and painful at times, but God did we love it. And at the end of the day having each other to come back to in the end made the job even more worth it.
