Jay had gone back to work about 2 weeks before I did although I wasn't able to stay off work for much longer so I went back in one week early to help with some paperwork while the team went out.

Once Ethan gave me the all-clear on my fieldwork I was back in with no hesitation. Today we were going to a demonstration, where teens were protesting against a case of police brutality.

We mostly stayed on the down-low observing everything play out, everyone was spread out until we noticed another group, consisting mostly of neo- nazis, approaching.

At first, just arguments started out with some shouting and shoving until everything got a little more aggressive and it was time for us to step in. I recognized Brianna Woods and saw her get knocked down. I quickly made my way over helping her up and using my body to shield her from the crashing bodies around us.

"C, mon." I shouted over all of the screaming trying to get us out of there.

We were being pushed and shoved everywhere and it was proving harder than I thought to get us out of there. "Y/n!" I heard someone call my name.

I looked up and saw Jay approaching us. "Get in front of her!" I yelled at him.

He stepped in front of Brianna and extended his arm back. I held it and he began making a way for us while I watched Brianna's back getting her out of there.

"You alright?" I asked her once we had put some distance in between us and the whole chaos.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She just had a cut on her forehead. We walked through the parking lot to get to our car when I saw a pair of feet from under a car.

I pushed Brianna behind me. "Jay." I pointed forward and pulled out my gun and he saw it too.

"Stay back." He told me as he pulled out his gun-making his way towards the person.

I looked around to see if anyone was still lurking. Jay shook his head letting me know it was a body. "Sarge, we got a body up in the parking lot," I called it into the radio alerting the team.

Turns out Brianna knew the victim so Jay and I were told to keep an eye on Brianna while we were able to make an arrest. Jay and I were walking Brianna home having a chat with her. I was walking next to Brianna and Jay was by my side slightly behind us.

We heard a car screeching and I grabbed a hold of Brianna instinctively as we all turned to look at the source of the noise. We saw a car window was rolled down and I was just able to make out a black object sticking out as the car rushed in our direction.

"GUN!" I yelled as I pulled Brianna with me to duck behind a car using my body as a shield once more to protect her from the bullets that started flying towards us. I pulled my gun out and started shooting back with Jay.

"Stay down!" Jay yelled to Brianna.

"Did you get the plate?" I asked Jay as the car had already turned the corner.

"I think so." He grabbed his radio and started calling it in as I bent down to check on Brianna.

"Alright, c, mon let's get you home." I picked up a shaken Brianna holding her close to me.

Jay stayed close wrapping his arms around us both as we made our way to Brianna's apartment. We got in and Brianna went to her bedroom to change while Jay and I stayed in her living room waiting for her.

"You okay baby?" Jay asked me.

"I'm fine." I opened my arms and spun showing him I was unharmed.

"Alright." He laughed pulling me close to him and giving me a kiss.

"Aww." We heard Brianna behind us and we both pulled away quickly.

"Oh sorry." I said as Jay cleared his throat.

"No please, you guys are adorable, I figured there was something more between you two." Brianna laughed.

"Oh yeah?" Jay asked. Brianna started making a cup of coffee for us.

"Was it that obvious?" I laughed.

"Yeah I mean the way you two look at each other, wow." was all she said.

Jay and I turned to look at each other smiling. "What does that mean?" Jay continued asking taking the cup of coffee Brianna handed to us.

"It's like I knew people said that some people are like soulmates...never actually believed it until I saw the way you look at each other. It's like every time you look at each other the whole world disappears, you're the only ones that matter, your each other's world." She told us and Jay and I couldn't help looking at each other feeling just that.

"That's beautiful," I admitted, a smile not leaving my lips.

"She's right though...you're my whole world," Jay smirked at me.

I felt myself blush slightly. "You're my whole world too, but let's stop being sappy or people are gonna hate us." I laughed putting my arm around his waist and leaning against the couch.

Brianna was telling her about Jamal and really just unbottling everything which Jay and I completely understood. My phone then started ringing. "Excuse me, guys." I walked away.

"y/n?" I heard Hailey's voice.

"Yeah what's up?" I asked

"We got a lead but we need you to bring Brianna in." She told me.

"Okay, we'll be there in 10." I hung up walking back to Jay and Brianna. "We need to head back to the precinct, they need us." I let them know

At the precinct, the team explained to us the plan they had come up with which involved Brianna helping us get Gaines caught, and to do that she had to use her relationship with Jamal.

We went to the location and we set up, making sure Brianna knew the safe word before getting started. We all knew that Jamal didn't actually love Brianna but getting her to accept that wasn't as easy. Things started out pretty smoothly until Gaines started to suspect.

"What are you doing here?" Gaines asked Brianna getting agitated.

We started moving in but Gaines acted faster than us, taking Brianna hostage into a bar full of people. I admit I started getting pretty nervous, Jay and I had developed a nice relationship with Brianna and I wanted her to be safe.

"Sarge I can go in, unarmed try to talk to Gaines," I suggested.

"What? No way!" Jay quickly protested.

"Send her in." Woods ordered.

"We can think of something else-" Hank started arguing back.

"No...that's my baby in there! Send her in! That's an order." Woods yelled.

I went to the back of my car to get suited up, but carrying no gun. I hid a knife in the back of my jeans but that was it. "What the hell are you thinking?" Jay walked over to me as I buckled everything on.

"I'm thinking about all of those people in there Jay, about Brianna!" I argued with him.

"He could kill you in there!" Jay was really angry.

"I don't know if you knew this Jay but in our job anyone could kill us every day." I brushed him off.

"Don't joke about this! You can't do this!" Jay lowered his voice practically begging me.

"I'm sorry Jay...but it's not your call." I finished walking off to the bar.

I was able to start a discussion with Gaines but noticed there was no way he was gonna let down his guard down. "Okay, so how about this you let Brianna go and you take me?" I suggested.

"STAND DOWN!" I heard Hank in my ear but I ignored him.

"Why are you any different?" He asked me.

"Brianna is just a regular citizen, I'm a detective, everyone outside knows me, I matter more to them so you'll be able to get a better deal." I continued chatting to him.

"Walk to me slowly." He instructed.

"Okay." I started walking towards him, discretely reaching for the knife in my jeans. I gave Brianna a light nod letting her know it was okay.

"Y/N STOP!" I heard Jay in my ear.

"Okay on the count of three." I hoped the team got the message.

"1." Gaines started

"2." I continued.

"3." We said at the same time. As soon as he let go of Brianna I launched myself at him knocking the gun out of his hands but not before he took a shot.

"I'M GOING IN!" I heard Jay's concerned voice in my ear.

"NOW!" I yelled to the team. "EVERYONE GET OUT!" I yelled at the people while trying to keep Gaines down.

He turned around trying to pin me down but I slashed the knife across his hand cutting it. He was about to grab me again when I felt someone knock me to the side pinning Gaines down.

I got up and saw Adam and Kev had a hold of him and were cuffing him. I got up dusting myself off and noticed Brianna was leaning against a chair holding her shoulder. I ran to her. "I got shot." She cried.

"You're gonna be okay c,mon." I put pressure on her wound walking out with her. Her dad ran to us taking over my spot and guiding her to the ambulance.

Jay ran to me. "Are you okay?" He asked me. "Did he hurt you?" He looked down at my bloody hands.

"You were right Jay, I shouldn't have done this, Brianna got shot and it's all my fault." I tried to walk past him to follow Brianna to the ambulance.

"Hey." He stopped me. "I was wrong, you did exactly what had to be done...she's gonna be okay thanks to you." He reassured me.

I wasn't convinced this was the case. "I have to go check on her." I walked past him but I felt him follow after me.

"y/n?" I heard Brianna call me from the back of the ambulance.

"Yes honey I'm here." I stepped up so she could see me.

"Thank you for saving me, again." She smiled. I couldn't help but smile with her thinking that maybe Jay was right.

"Call me if you need anything okay, I'll come visit you in the hospital." I winked at her.

"Okay. And Jay." She called him.

"What's up?" He peaked his head in.

"Marry her already man." She laughed.

"I'm trying." He shrugged laughing with her.

Jay helped me off the ambulance. "Try harder mister." I giggled giving him a kiss.

"Oh trust me I will." He put his arm around my waist walking with me to the car.
