《Jay Halstead x Reader Story/Imagine》(28. Through thick and thin)

I was in the shower getting ready to head to work. I heard a knock at the door before Jay walked in. "Babe, Will called me, he wants me to go in to take a look at one of his patients he thinks might be related to something in our realms. I let Hank know." He told me.
I poked my head out of the shower. "I'll come with you, give me 10 mins." I hurried things up.
__
I strapped on my duty belt and met Jay in the living room. "You ready?" He asked me'
"Let's go." I nodded grabbing my jacket. Jay opened the door for me and we walked down.
Jay drove us to the hospital and once we got there Will spotted us walking over. "Hey." He greeted us, giving me a quick side hug.
"So what's up man." Jay asked his brother after giving him a fist bump.
"Yeah, come with me." He pulled us to the center of the E.R where we wouldn't get in the way. "We've gotten numerous patients come in, Fentanyl ODs. I wouldn't have called you if I didn't think it was worth checking out." Will told us.
"I'll call narcotics see if they know anything." I told them stepping away to call.
I was hanging up when Jay walked over to me. "Ruz called, there's a suspicious package by the lake, they want us there." Jay told me.
"Alright let's go." We got in the car and I drove us to the lake." Once we got there Hank called Jay over and pointed for me to go with the rest of the group.
I met with them and Mouse started catching me up on what they knew when we heard a scream coming from further down the beach.
I started running towards it as did everyone else. There was a kid screaming, I approached him and knelt in front of him. "What's wrong?" I asked him as everyone else waited for an answer too.
He pointed at the water further down and we saw a body floating face down in the water. Jay and Adam ran into the water grabbing the body and pulling it out.
They turned it and we were all horrified to see the face bashed in. I quickly covered the kid's face bringing him closer to me. As if I would be able to protect his innocence.
—————-
We headed to the office and started investigating the fentanyl overdoses that Will asked us too as well as the body that we had just found. My desk phone started ringing I picked it up and it was the corner letting us know that she had a report ready I thanked her before hanging up.
"Sarge that was the corner she has a report for us." I walked into Hank's office.
"Ok, you and Halstead get over there." Hank told me. I nodded and headed back to my desk to grab my coat.
"Let's go, we're heading to the morgue." I told him, he got up grabbing his coat ready to leave.
Once Jay and I got there the corner let us know that these past few days had been overwhelming and that she had gotten multiple bodies with the same cause of death, fentanyl overdoses. What was strange however was that the body we found didn't die from the same cause which pointed to the fact that this could be unrelated.

Jay called the team letting them know what we found out. On our way back we came in through the garage. Mouse was working downstairs and he hollered for Jay.
"Can I talk to you for a sec man?" He called Jay.
"Sure." Jay let go of my hand.
"I'll meet you upstairs." I smiled feeling like this was gonna be a serious conversation judging by Mouse's expression.
I walked up to the office letting the team know a little bit more detail about what the corner told us before taking a seat in my desk and starting to make phone calls to my C.Is.
I was finishing up a call with one of my C.Is when Jay came upstairs and he looked furious. He threw his coat angrily on his chair before taking a seat.
"Is everything okay?" I asked Jay after I hung up.
"No, my best friend is a f*cking idiot with a death wish." He answered annoyed.
"What?" I asked confused but before he could answer Hank had walked out of this office asking for our attention.
He asked Erin and Jay to go with him to follow a lead. Jay got up and he picked up his jacket he sighed heavily and I could tell he was trying to shake the anger off. I furrowed my brows wondering what could've happened.
After I saw Jay had walked down the stairs and heard the gate open and close I decided to walk down to check on Mouse, see if he needed someone to talk to.
"Hey." I got Mouse's attention, he was staring at his feet sitting at his desk.
"Oh, hey." He sat up pretending like everything was fine. "D'you need something?" He asked forcing a smile.
"No, just wanted to come check up on you." I smiled walking around and taking a seat on a chair Mouse had to the side.
"Did Jay tell you?" He asked rolling his eyes slightly.
"No, he got called out but I could tell he was pretty angry." I told him.
Mouse pursed his lips, nodding and sighing. "I told him I was seriously thinking of enlisting back into the rangers...he didn't take it very well." He told me.
I sighed knowing that Jay was just worried for his best friend and I myself felling worried too but knowing that ultimately I would support Mouse in whatever decision he took. "Do you mind if I ask you why?" I asked instead of trying to defend Jay.
Mouse's eyes snapped up looking straight into mine, as if this was the first time anyone was willing to listen. "I feel like I was born to be a soldier you know?" Mouse was speaking passionately. "I thought I would be okay, now that Jay brought me in here to work with you guys, but seeing you guys, seeing Jay walk out of here every day and make this country better it sucks." Mouse sighed frustrated. "I mean that's what I want to be doing, I want to be out there saving people." he finished.
I almost felt myself tear up feeling Mouse's frustration. "I get it. And I think that's beautiful." I scooted to the edge of my seat extending my hand out for Mouse to take it. "Listen, I'm not here to justify Jay, I love him but his emotions tend to get the better of him. You're one of the most important people in his life and I know he wants you to be happy, he really does, but I know he's also afraid of loosing his best friend again." I told him.

Mouse squeezed my hand giving me a smile. We continued chatting for a bit, Mouse told me he had a minor charge that needed to be dropped for him to be able to enlist. I encouraged him to talk to Voight letting him know that he had done a lot for this team and that Hank would take that into account.
I was getting up to leave when I heard someone come through the door. "Hey." Jay greeted me before looking at Mouse angrily. "Here." He put a phone down in front of Mouse.
"Jay." I called him when he was gonna walk out.
"Did he tell you? Did he tell you all about his suicide mission." Jay asked me.
I shot him a look telling him to calm down. "This is what I want to do, save people why can't you just understand that?" Mouse got up coming towards us.
"You're doing that right now! Why can't YOU understand that!" Jay raised his voice also stepping forward. I stood in between them trying to calm Jay down.
"You know this isn't what I mean! I need to be out there, I can't just sit around all day!" Mouse argued.
"Oh yeah! You wanna go back! be my guest! Just don't expect me to come to your rescue once you've OD'd on the side of the street because it was all too much to handle." Jay kept walking forward.
"JAY STOP IT!" I pushed him back, completely shocked by what he said to his best friend. "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!" I got angry at him myself. "It's not his God damn fault that you're scared of loosing him, for heaven's sake he just want's to do exactly what you do and did! Why can't you just be there for him instead of making him feel like a sh*t person for wanting to help." I had to give Jay my peace of mind.
"y/n it's okay-" Mouse tried to stop me.
I turned to face Mouse. "No Mouse it's not okay at all. Listen if you want to enlist than do it for yourself and not for anyone else. I just hope you know you're a good man, a great man and a hero and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise." I turned back around glaring at Jay before storming off, bumping into Adam in the process.
_____
The rest of the day I felt angry from the heated argument between Jay and Mouse. But more specifically I felt really disappointed in Jay for speaking to Mouse that way, knowing damn well that he didn't mean it.
I heard Mouse and Jay argue a little more afterwards but I felt like I had gotten involved too much so I didn't want to over step anymore. After we were finally able to make an arrest the guys were going to head to Molly's.
"D'you wanna go?" Jay asked me.
"No, I'm going downstairs, I'm keeping Mouse some company." I answered him calmly but he could tell I was still disappointed.
"y/n I'm sorry." He apologized to me.
"I'm not the one you should be apologizing too Jay." I turned to face him before walking down.
Mouse was watching the Blackhawks game on his computer. "D'you mind if I keep you company?" I asked him getting his attention.
He turned pulling a chair next to his and opening a beer for me. "Thank you for today." Mouse turned and smiled at me after we had been sitting for a couple minutes.
I smiled back at him. He placed his arm around my chair in an amicable way. A couple seconds later Trudy walked in. "Mouse, here." She said passing a piece of paper to him.
Mouse took it and I looked at it with him, it was a document to clear Mouse of the charges. "How?" I turned to Trudy.
"I pulled a few strings with a few friends, good thing I knew in the morning, took a while." Trudy laughed. Both Mouse and I furrowed our brows.
"How did you know?" Mouse asked her thinking about how he had talked to Hank only a while ago.
"Halstead told me and I owed him a favor." Trudy winked before walking out.
Mouse and I turned to face each other sharing a smile for our person. "D'you wanna come over?" I asked him.
"I'd love to." We got up and Mouse shut everything off before we walked to my car. I drove us to Jay's and my place but we stopped for some beers, chips and tacos on our way there.
Once we got home I opened the door and I saw Jay sitting on the couch looking bummed out. "Babe, I hope you don't mind I brought a guest over." I told him.
Jay looked at me confused before Mouse walked in holding the pack of beers and the pizza. Jay's face lit up. "Man, I'm sorry." Jay got up.
Mouse smiled at his brother. "Thanks for everything man." Mouse set the beers down going over to give Jay a hug.
I couldn't stop smiling and almost felt myself tear up. "I'm gonna go to bed you boys have fun." I decided to give them space only walking over to give Jay a kiss.
"Thank you for keeping me in check." He whispered after I had pulled away from the kiss.
"Through thick and thin babe." I replied giving him another kiss before going to bed. I heard Jay and Mouse sharing stories and laughing all night, not even bothered by the fact that they were being loud. Just grateful for the great man I had the pleasure of sharing a life with.

8 155Points of Light - An Oral History of the Collapse
Humanity endures. The phrase is not only an informal slogan of the reformed United Nations, but a rallying cry the world over. Even in the face of extermination, we struggled, we fought, and we endured. But just how close did we actually come? In our darkest hour, how many steps separated our species from oblivion? And are we even safe now? Were the mistakes made by earlier generations really so obvious? Or are they only so blatent when we look back with the advantage of hindsight? If so, what horrors might be staring us in the face even now that no one has the foresight to prevent? Drawn from thousands of interviews, as well as uncorrupted contemporary recordings and source documentation dating back to the early 2000s; Points of Light is a definative look at the last half century of upheaval, prosperity and carnage. It tells the tale of what happened, how it happened, who was responsible and most importantly, what we might be able to do to prevent it from happening again. This is a rewrite of a previously started fiction under a pen-name. Chapters will be updated every two days at 6:00 EST.
