《Jay Halstead x Reader Story/Imagine》(26. Grandpa)

My phone rang as I rushed into the bathroom trying to fix my hair for the 1000 time. "Babe can you please grab that." I hollered at Jay who was in the kitchen.
I heard the phone stop ringing. "Hey what's up? Alright, I'll let her know, she'll be down in a minute." I heard him hang up. "Trudy's downstairs." He told me.
"Ughhh!" I grunted at myself in the mirror mad that I couldn't get my baby hairs to cooperate with me resulting in me opting for leaving my hair down. "Alright." I patted my dress down, grabbed my dress, and walked out. "How do I look?" I asked Jay. My phone kept dinging, Trudy was spamming me with texts hurrying me down.
"You look beautiful and I'm kinda jealous Will stole me because I would've loved to accompany you tonight." He walked over to give me a kiss. My phone kept dinging so I silenced it annoyed at her ruining the moment.
"Thanks, Babe, I'll text you when I'm on my way home," I told him kissing him again before grabbing my phone and running out to meet Trudy.
____
I was in the kitchen helping Grandpa fix up the last few things. "Alright, the salad's ready, is there anything else you need help with?" I asked him after I set the bowl on the table.
"No that's all dear I'll just grab the wine." He walked over to the fridge. "Damn it." He sighed annoyed.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"I forgot to get the wine," he told me annoyed with himself.
"Dad! we need wine for dinner," Trudy commented.
"Oh don't worry about it Grandpa, I'll just run to the store and grab some," I told him grabbing my purse.
"No, you don't have to dear, I can drive." He tried to stop me.
"Grandpa, it's alright, you and Trudy start eating and I'll be back in no time," I told him, walking to the door.
I ran out and started speed walking to the store trying not to make too much time. I got to the nearest store but it was close. "Damn it!" I whispered annoyed to myself thinking about going back but I wanted Grandpa to feel like this dinner was perfect since we barely got to have family dinner together anymore.
I was walking back from the store after finally being able to find an open store and buying the wine when I started hearing an ambulance. I walked faster until I turned the corner and saw paramedics loading Trudy into the ambulance. I dropped the wine the glass breaking causing attention.
I started running towards the ambulance when someone stepped in front of me stopping me. "y/n! Where the hell were you? We've been calling you non-stop!" Adam was in front of me scolding me. I shoved past him wanting to get to Trudy but the ambulance doors had shut and it was already driving away.

Jay had now run in front of me. "Where were you? I thought you-" I could tell he was angry but just way more relieved at the same time as he pulled me into a tight hug.
I didn't hug him back but didn't pull away either keeping my eyes on the ambulance. "Jay, what happened?" I couldn't think of anything else other than getting to her.
"Someone attacked her, she was grabbing something from her car and someone attacked her and took her gun." Jay told me.
"I need to- I have to- I need to get to the hospital." I was a little speechless. I was used to this kind of thing but Trudy, Trudy...she was my mom. I felt paralyzed.
"C, mon let's go." Jay guided me to the car.
____
I had been in the waiting room waiting for Trudy to wake up, just still trying to wrap my head around what was happening. "Trudy! Where is she?" I heard Mouch's voice.
"Mouch." I ran to him, we hugged each other sharing our worry.
"Is she okay?" He asked, tears forming in his eyes.
"They haven't told me much but she hasn't woken up yet." I told him holding back a few tears myself.
"What the hell happened?" He then asked me.
It was the first time I started thinking about things myself. "I don't know I just went to the store to buy some wine because Grandpa-" I stopped talking, my mouth opened wide as the realization hit me. "Oh my god." was all I said before running off.
I ran past the front door where the team was talking to Ms.Goodwin. "y/n!" I heard Hank call me. "Where are you going?" He hollered.
"Trudy's dad, he...he was at the house." I turned to say before I kept running. I realized I didn't know where Jay had parked, I stopped for a second giving the team enough time to catch up to me.
"C, mon we're all going, you ride with Adam." Hank told me.
"Let's go." Adam told me guiding me quickly to his car. As we did Hank was calling patrolmen to get to the house to check for any signs of Robert.
We were only a block away. "We need the forensic team here at the location, there are signs of a break-in and a body." I heard a voice come through the radio.
It was like a blow to my chest, Adam parked the car and I ran out, Hank, Al, Jay, Antonio were all trying to stop me but I simply pushed past them until I got inside. I walked into the hall and saw a sheet covering a body. "Let me see the body," I instructed the patrolman closest to it.
"y/n, don't" Kev was behind me.
"LET ME SEE IT!" I shouted angrily. The patrolman bent down lifting the sheet off slightly. I saw Grandpa, all the color left from his eyes, his skin. I felt my knees give in, Kevin catching me before I hit the floor, everything after that was sort of blurry, I heard and saw people around me but it was all muffled like I was in a nightmare.

I remember someone carrying me to a car, I was being driven somewhere but I didn't care where. Someone carried me, taking me to an elevator and it felt like in seconds I was at home, on my couch.
"y/n?" I heard my name and it was like I snapped back. I turned and saw Kelly was squatting down next to me. I looked around taking in my location.
"Where's Jay?" I asked looking around the apartment.
"He just left, he's gonna go help with the case, Voight wants you to stay home while they catch whoever did this," Kelly told me.
"No, no no I need to go help, I need to go help them Kelly." I got up looking around for my phone, my purse.
"Bear, you can't, you need to-" Kelly stood up and tried to stop me.
"NO KELLY!" I shouted regretting it immediately. I took a deep breath. "What I need to do is to get to work and catch whoever did this to Robert and to Trudy, because maybe, maybe if I had been there, if I hadn't left Grandpa would still be alive and Trudy...Trudy, she wouldn't" I couldn't stop myself from crying.
"Don't do that. Don't do that to yourself this is not your fault." Kelly walked forward engulfing me in a hug.
"I could've stopped it Kelly, if I had just stayed or if I had just turned back." I cried in his arms.
"You don't know that, for all we know you could've gotten hurt or worse if you'd stayed." Kelly tried to calm me.
Just like the night Shay died Kelly let me cry for a while, my head rested on his legs, after a while I fell asleep.
____
I woke up to the smell of bacon and waffles. "Morning." Kelly greeted me from the kitchen, I had stayed on the couch.
"Hey, did I-" I pointed at the couch.
"I didn't wanna wake you so I thought I'd let you sleep there, I took the bed." He told me.
I nodded walking over to the kitchen, Kelly had already served breakfast. I sat on a stool and he sat opposite me. I played with my food for a while just thinking about last night. "He got me my first car you know," I spoke.
"What?" Kelly asked confused.
"Robert, even though I wasn't really his granddaughter he always told me how happy he was that Trudy had taken me in. He used to tell me how much he had wished for a granddaughter and that it was like God had answered his prayers when I came into their lives. He was always there for me, he helped me get into college, into the police academy, he helped me get this apartment." I felt a couple of tears fall down my cheeks. "I always begged him not to give me his money, not to waste it on me but he insisted it was what made him happy." I tried to force a smile. "Trudy, Amy, and Robert they were my only family for a long time, they were the ones that were there for me day in and day out."
"Trudy's gonna pull through, I've never met anyone more stubborn to stay alive." Kelly comforted me.
I laughed thinking about Trudy's stubborn character, Kelly was right, there was no way she was gonna leave me here. My phone started ringing, I ran to grab it from the coffee table in the living room. 'Mouch' read the name.
"Hello?" I picked up feeling worried.
"Honey, she's awake, Trudy she wants to see you," Mouch told me. I felt a huge wave of relief flood over me.
______
I stayed with Trudy the whole time until she was being released, hearing updates from Voight, Erin, Jay, Al every couple of hours. I think the fact that I had so much desire to be there for Trudy during this was the only thing keeping me calm about not being able to help the team.
I helped Trudy settle at home before she told me to go home myself. Insisting that she was okay and that she would call if she needed anything. Reluctantly I agreed and went home myself.
I decided to fix myself some dinner when I heard the door open. "Babe?" I heard Jay's voice.
"In here." I hollered as I was pouring myself some hot water for some tea. Once he came in I set the kettle down and walked over giving him a hug and a kiss.
"We got the son of a b*tch" He told me.
I felt a wave of anger hit me like I wanted to go see this guy and give him what he deserved, but in the end, I was just happy, happy that some justice was going to be served, enough for me to simply appreciate this moment. "Thank you." I felt myself tear up as I leaned forward giving Jay a long kiss.
"I'm sorry I haven't checked up on you more- I just wanted to catch this guy." Jay apologized.
"Don't, don't be sorry, that's exactly what I wanted, it actually gave me peace of mind knowing that you were out there doing your best for Trudy, for Robert, and for me." I told him.
He smiled. "So you okay?" He finally asked me.
"I will be." I gave him a small smile. "How about we order some pizza and watch trash tv?" I then asked him.
"I would love that." His smile widened making mine do the same as he lifted me up, I put my legs around him as we made our way over to the couch.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
