Jay and I had decided to head to the bar to hang with some of the guys from the firehouse. We were having fun, chatting as usual. Herman had hired a young boy, Freddie Clemente, who was trying to get his life back together and he was helping them out at the bar.
"So I heard from the grapevine that you two are moving in together." Gabby oscillated her eyebrows at us.
I turned to Kelly scolding him with my stare. "I didn't know it was a secret." He lifted his hands up defensively.
Jay and I both laughed. "It isn't, we are but we're still in the process so keeping things low profile until everything is settled," I told Gabby, Jay nodding next to me.
We had been chatting for a while and Hermann hadn't come back from the back where he said he was gonna go grab another box of beer. "Where's Hermann?" I asked Otis and Gabby.
"He's probably distracted in the back." Otis shrugged it off.
"I'm gonna go check on him, see if he needs any help," I told them patting Jay's leg before hopping off the stool.
I walked around the back calling Hermann's name but heard just a faint whisper, I sped up my step. I turned the corner and saw Hermann laying in a pool of blood clutching his side.
"Christopher!" I quickly ran to him putting pressure on his wound. "HELP!!! GABBY!" I yelled to everyone else. "Who did this to you, Hermann?" I asked him trying to keep him conscious.
"Freddie." I just managed to make out his name.
"Ok Hermann stay with me." I tried keeping him alert. Gabby and Otis ran in then.
"Oh my god." I heard Gabby as she quickly came beside me inspecting his wound.
An ambulance had been called and I'd taken the knife Freddie left as evidence, I called for the patrolmen to keep an eye out for him. Jay and I made a clear path for the Ambulance all the way to the hospital while I called Cindy letting her know what happened as calmly as possible.
______
Jay and I had waited a while in the waiting room, Hermann was critical but we knew there wasn't much we could do so we thought we would go get some sleep before tomorrow.
I got home and still had some of Hermann's dried blood on my hands and clothes. My breath hitched as I took a minute looking at my hands just praying Hermann would be ok.
"Babe?" I heard and turned to see Jay was now standing in front of me,
"Sorry what?" I shook my head getting out of my head.
"I asked you if you wanted some dinner" he repeated.
"Oh, no I'm not hungry I think I'll just hop in the shower and go to bed." I told him.

"Listen, I know you're worried about Christopher but you need take care of yourself." Jay pulled me in for a hug resting his head on top of mine. "I'll make dinner, you hop in the shower and come get something to eat when you're ready." he pulled away kissing the top of my head.
"Okay, thank you." I stood on my tippy toes and gave him a quick kiss before heading to the shower.
________
Jay and I had barely slept, thinking about Hermann all night. We had a quick breakfast before heading back to the hospital. Cindy had let us know Hermann was awake but still delicate.
We had only been there for a couple of minutes when Will asked to speak to Jay. Will had told us they had a couple of patients brought in from 51 from an apartment fire.
I was waiting for Will when my phone started ringing.
"Hey Mah what's up?" I picked up.
"Mouch just proposed to me." She told me.
"What?!" I was completely taken aback and made my way outside quickly. "Oh my God! That's amazing! Congratulations!" I added.
"I said no." Trudy then told me.
I didn't know what to say. "Oh...ok...uhmm... why?" I then asked.
"Well, he asked me in the middle of the firehouse, while his best friend is in hospital I mean...." Trudy scoffed.
Jay was calling me back in. I told him to give me a second.
"Trudy... I know you love him and he loves you... just think about it. I have to go, love you." I hung up.
I ran back inside to Jay. "Come here," He said bringing me to a less crowded space.
"What's wrong? Is Hermann okay?" I asked him worried.
"Yeah yeah, he's fine but Will asked me to check on something for a patient the guys from 51 brought in but they thought her injuries were suspicious-" He started.
"Hey, can I talk to you guys for a second?" Ethan had come up to us.
"Yeah, sure what's up?" I told him.
"Come." He said taking us to the doctor's lounge away from the crowd. He closed the door behind him.
"Is everything ok?" I asked.
"I don't think so. I was treating a patient, Jessica Pope had a chemotherapy overdose, Natalie was treating another patient the same thing, Will too and there's just been another patient brought in with the same symptoms." He started.
"Ok...that's odd," I commented.
"Mass suicide maybe?" Jay suggested.
"Doesn't look like it, we only have one patient that looks like suicide, Jessica Pope." Ethan told us.
"I'll call Voight, and run a background check on Jessica Pope" Jay told us stepping outside.
"Can you do more background checks on other patients? any other information that you could give us? Doctors that treated them, place, etc? " I asked Ethan after Jay stepped outside.

"We're doing that right now, I called Sharon and she's coming down see if she can get clearance for further information." He told me.
"Ok, please keep us updated," I told him and he walked away to keep treating patients.
"What's up?" I asked Jay after I met him outside.
"Voight wants me to go to the scene, Severide's there and he's collected some things that weren't burnt." He told me.
"Ok, I'll stay here, see if Sharon can tell us anything else," I told him.
"yep, see you soon." He said giving me a quick kiss.
"Hey, be nice to Kelly," I told him before he could walk off.
"Yeah yeah." He smirked.
_____
Jay and Kelly came back pretty quickly while I was talking to Ethan and Sharon.
"What do you know about Jessica?" Goodwin asked Jay.
I walked over to give Kelly a quick sidehug and he just held me there with his arm around my shoulder tightly.
"Not a lot at this time." Jay answered her, looking at Kelly and I for a quick second.
"That's all that was salvaged from the fire." Kelly added pointing at the evidence bag Jay was holding.
Dr.Charles started taking a look at the bag and Erin came in. "No signs of foul play, all evidence is pointing to suicide she told us." We all nodded.
Dr.Charles kept looking at the evidence bag. "How are you?" Kelly whispered to me kissing the top of my head.
"All good." I smiled up at him. "You?"
"Excuse me guys." Jay pushed past Kelly and I walking away.
I furrowed my brows and went after him. "You okay?" I asked him grabbing his arm gently.
"Yeah, hmm...I still get a little uncomfortable seeing you like that with the guy, I mean you guys did kiss and go on a date." he was honest with me.
"Jay, it was one time...and there's nothing going on between us you know that." I tried to reassure him.
"I know I know...I'll get over it eventually." He gave me a forced smile before walking away since Will was calling him.
I decided to walk back to the waiting room to see if Cindy needed anything. While I walked past Hermanns's room I saw Cruz was inside talking to him crying. I couldn't imagine how he felt, probably feeling like it was his fault for bringing Freddie into the bar. But if I knew Hermann well enough I knew he didn't blame him.
"Hey Cindy, how are you doing?" I asked her as I sat down next to her, Mouch on the opposite side of her.
"Hanging in there sweetie." She gave me that sweet smile she never failed to have, not even in the hardest of times.
"He'll be ok, he's as strong as a horse." I squeezed her hand supportively.
"I know he will." She smiled again.
"Mouch, you okay?" I then asked him and I think he knew there was a hidden question in there.
"Yep...Uhm I'm okay." He answered me with his usual confused tone.
"Things will sort themselves out, just give it time." I winked at him and he smiled.
We then heard beeping in Hermann's room making us all run over. I noticed the numbers on his monitor were going down fast. "WE NEED HELP IN HERE!" I said pressing the big red button behind Hermann's bed.
Connor along with multiple doctors rushed in. "We need to take him to surgery now!" Connor told the nurses and they began wheeling him out. I held Cindy while she started crying.
There wasn't much else we could so we sat back down in the waiting room. Mouch then took Cindy to eat something in the hospital's cafeteria and I stayed with Cruz. I didn't even notice when I started drifting off to sleep.
"Babe." I heard someone whispering while shaking me slightly. I woke up and noticed I had been leaning on Cruz's shoulder sleeping and drooling.
"Oh, I'm sorry Cruz." I apologized wiping the drool off his jacket.
"Don't worry about it, we all haven't slept well these days." He gave me a soft smile.
"Let's get you home." Jay extended his hand out to me.
"But Cindy she-" I started
"I'll stay here, don't worry about it, she'll understand," Cruz told me.
It took me a second but I agreed. "Okay, I'll be back early tomorrow," I told him and he nodded.
I started walking out with Jay locking arms with him still wiping my eyes a little from tiredness. We were walking out the front when we saw Will, Dr.Charles, and Ethan chatting, we approached and heard them chatting about Jessica Pope's suicide note Jay brought in.
"I just got some really weird test results," Ethan told us all. "She died of a chemo overdose." He told us.
"What's weird about that?" Will asked being that we all had figured that out.
"The results also showed she never had cancer." He then revealed.
We all turned to look at each other completely surprised and I was suddenly fully awake knowing this was gonna be a long case.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
