《Jay Halstead x Reader Story/Imagine》(12.1. Green Nail polish)

Nadia and I had gotten lunch and as we headed upstairs I heard a call come through in Voight's office, I went over to drop my stuff off on my desk.
Things were pretty busy in the office since the guys from NYPD came over for us to help them with a case they thought linked to one of theirs. Voight walked out of his office.
"y/n, you and Jay head to 51, Lt.Casey called, they have a fire they think might be more in our department, go check it out and report back." He instructed.
"Yes sir." I put my jacket back on and gestured for Jay to get going. I drove us to the firehouse and we made our way inside.
"Hey." Jay got everyone's attention.
Kelly was sitting at the table eating, he gestured for me to go give him a hug. I walked over and I hugged him before he pulled me down to sit on his lap as he continued eating.
I once more saw Jay's jaw clench but he looked down and avoided looking at us. "So Casey, we heard there's something you want us to have a look at?" I talked to Matt.
"Yes, we attended a raging apartment fire just a while ago, our guys are checking it out and at first we thought it had something to do with an electrical fire. We saved two victims, a male, and a female but we got a call from Med letting us know that the female victim had been r*ped. We think it was arson so we called you guys to come check the scene out." Casey explained.
"Sounds familiar," I spoke to Jay thinking about the NYPD case. He nodded.
"Ok, why don't you lead the way and we'll follow you in our car," Jay suggested.
Casey nodded and started heading out. I turned and gave Kelly a quick kiss on the cheek before heading out with Jay.
I got in the driver's side and started driving behind Casey. Jay was awfully quiet.
"Hey are we good?" I asked him. He didn't reply and simply kept looking forward but I could see he was lost in his train of thought. "Jay!" I said his name louder.

"What-" He snapped out of his thoughts.
"I asked if we're good?" I asked him.
"Oh, yeah yeah, I just...you gave me loads to think about." He said in quite a confusing tone. He sounded slightly annoyed but also calm.
"Look, I said what I said because I want us to be ok, and we work together whether you like that or not. " I told him.
He just nodded but didn't say anything.
We got to the scene and Casey gave us a wet rag to put over our mouths before going in. We walked in and immediately the smell of smoke filled my lungs, I felt myself getting a little bit nervous remembering Gish's attempt at burning me alive.
We walked upstairs and we began inspecting the scene. Casey explained the starting point of the fire as well as what led them to believe this was arson, I moved some debris from the floor and I noticed a nail polish bottle. I picked it up and showed it to Jay.
"The other victims had green nail polish on didn't they?" Jay asked me.
I nodded before opening the bottle and revealing a green nail polish. I didn't realize until after a couple of seconds how much the rag I was holding helped me. I passed the nail polish to Jay starting to feel lightheaded and flustered.
"I'm sorry I need to-" I couldn't finish before I was running out to get some air. I walked outside and walked across the road gasping for air. I was still a little dizzy but tried my best to breathe in and out.
I jumped when I felt someone touch my back. "Hey, hey hey, are you okay?" Jay asked me with worry on his face. He walked in front of me, his hands on my arms.
I was still trying to breathe in and out. "Yeah, I just didn't realize how much the smell was going to hit me, brought me back to Gish." I breathed out.
"C,mon come here." He guided me behind a building after he realized I was holding back because of the people around me.

"That day was horrible Jay, I was ready to die. I couldn't breathe, and I didn't think you guys would find me, the smoke- I-I couldn't see-" I started letting it out.
Jay pulled me into his arms. "You're safe now. I won't let anything happen to you anymore." He spoke while I cried in his chest.
"You know I heard you." I pulled back a little although his arms were still wrapped around me.
"What?" He was confused.
"That day, in the ambulance I heard you, I heard what you said. I think that's one of the reasons I'm here." I confessed.
I could tell he didn't know what to say or do. "I-" He began.
"You don't have to say anything," I told him burying myself in his arms again. He held me and we stayed like that for a while until I had unbottled my emotions a little.
"Should we head back?" He asked me after I pulled out and wiped my tears and snot.
"Yeah, I'm sorry about this I-" I began
"No, don't apologize, it's ok." He smiled.
We headed back to the office and they already had a suspect in interrogation. Gregory Yates.
Before heading to my desk I stopped at Nadia's asking her for some makeup to hide my puffy eyes.
"How's the Erin Bday surprise going?" I whispered to her.
"Good, I was gonna ask you, can you help me getting her cake later?" She asked me.
"Uhmm" I hesitated. "You know what you can take my car," I suggested instead giving her her make-up back.
I got up and stood next to her and in that second the suspect walked out.
He turned to face Nadia and me, his look sent chills down my body. I saw Nadia was uncomfortable too. "You okay?" I checked with Nadia once he was on the stairs. She just nodded.
I headed back to my desk. We continued trying to work with the NYPD detectives but deep down we all knew who was responsible for all these murders, we just needed evidence.
I was looking through some evidence photos when Will and Jay walked up the steps. I heard they were interviewing Will because he knew one of the nurses that had been killed.
Will, Jay, Olivia, and Hank walked into the coffee room and shut the door. It all seemed pretty relaxed until I heard Jay shouting. Everyone's attention was drawn to them and I was able to hear that Will was being interviewed as a possible suspect in the murders.
Jay dragged Will outside angrily telling him to go back to Med and not to talk to the police without Jay present. Will left mostly against his will and I could see Jay was really angry. He walked to the locker room.
I got up to follow him. I walked into the locker room and he was trying to cool down. "You alright?" I asked him keeping my distance.
"They went behind my back! They think Will killed these women." He complained to me.
"Jay, I get it but you have to think logically now. Get evidence to show Will's whereabouts at the times of the murders, I'm sure his name will get cleared in no time." I approached him slowly.
He let out a few shaky breaths before he was calm. "Yeah, you're right." He wiped his face.
"Hey, he didn't do it so now you just have to prove it to them." I smiled at him.
"What a day huh?" He laughed.
"I guess we've really got each other's backs when we aren't pushing each other away." I also laughed.
He turned to look at me, his eyes moving from my eyes to my lips. "I'm gonna head back." I took a step back and was ready to walk out.
"Wait!" Jay stopped me at the door. I gestured for him to go on. "Thank you." He leaned down and gave me a kiss on my cheek.
"Yep." was all I said before walking out.

Gateway
An archaeologist by the name of Søren Quinn wakes up elsewhere after boarding a plane for Iceland. Now he has to come to terms with a significant loss of recent memory and his apparent death and rebirth, provided he can survive the rigors of the Tutorial on Gateway Station and whatever waits for him after the Tutorial. Updates. When I can... sorry. Author's Note. Gateway is a portal/isekai style GameLit novel, but it has two main lead characters and will eventually have a small cast of minor lead characters to support them. There will be small elements of base building / kingdom management added as well over time, but they will not be the focus. Gateway really is a slow burn that takes some time to get going unfortunately, but I hope you find it's worth the wait. Thank you! p.s. Book One is finally done (only needed one more chapter unfortunately...) but I'm off hiatus now and will be starting on Book Two right away!
