《Jay Halstead x Reader Story/Imagine》(11. I am the apocalypse)

Last night Nadia and I had the best sleepover, painting our nails, crying over horrible romantic movies, and just chatting about our prospects in life. She was so nervous about passing her detective exams and this was such a nice way for her to relax. The next morning I drove us both to the district and we were both happily giggling away.
We made it upstairs and there weren't many people in the office yet, Jay, Alvin, and both of us were the only ones there so far. "Morning." Nadia and I said in unison once we made it to our desks.
"Hey ladies." Jay greeted us while Alvin nodded.
"Hey, Al." I called him.
"Yes honey" He peeked his head from his desk.
"What d'you get Trudy for her birthday?" I oscillated my eyebrows at him.
He opened his mouth and looked around before closing it and disappearing behind his desk again. I laughed. "What d'you get her?" Jay asked me.
"I'm taking her to dinner tonight and I made her something with my own two hands." I turned and winked at Nadia who had helped me last night.
"Mhm," Jay hummed smirking.
Slowly the rest of the team started crawling in, it was a slow day and not much was happening at all. I grabbed my phone to text Kelly.
: Hey, how's your day going?
: Got called to an ammonia leak, trying to get all the patients to Chicago Med but it's crazy, gonna need all hands on deck.
: Alright, I'll ask Voight if I can go lend a helping hand, please be careful ❤️
: Thanks, Bear🐻
I put my phone away and went to talk to Hank. I knocked on his door and he gesture for me to come in.
"Hey Sarge, the guys at 51 are handling a huge amonia leak, was wondering if I could go lend a hand. I'll have my phone at all times ready for a case." I asked him.
"Sure thing, let us know if they need more assitance." Hank waved me off.
"Alright, thanks Sarge." I walked out of his office.
I grabbed my coat and started heading out. "Where are you off too?" Jay asked getting up from his desk.
"Oh, I'm going to Med see if I can help them out, they've got their hands full right now and I thought I could help with my medical training." I told him.
"Oh, well if you see my brother don't talk talk to him. Please." He told me.
"I don't promise anything." I laughed while making my way to the stairs. "See you later Nadi." I blew a kiss at her.
____
Once I arrived at the hospital it looked like chaos, the Firehouse 51 rigs were parked in front of the hospital and there were people flooding inside. I parked my car and hopped out.
"Help me please!" A woman was carrying her daughter in her arms.
"What's wrong?" I asked her.
" I don't know, She's been complaining of stomach pain and she's just screaming in pain." The mother cried.
I knew the guys from Med and 51 would be doing triage so I thought best to get her in and give all the info to whoever was in charge and let them handle it.
"Alright, come with me." The mother passed me her daughter and walked with me inside. Gabby spotted me.

"Hey, is she ok?" Gabby asked me.
"Abdominal pain, Green?" I asked her.
Gabby nodded and pointed at the waiting room. I sat the lady with her daughter and asked them to be patient.
I walked back to the front to see if there was anyone else to help when Kelly spotted me. "Hey." He patted my back. "Thanks for coming, I'd hug you but." He pointed at himself covered in all sorts of bodily fluids.
"Don't worry about it, what can I do?" I asked him tying my hair up.
"We need help with triage, and keeping people calm, we have a few guys stirring up some trouble so be careful." He told me.
"Ok, you too." I told him heading off to where the untreated patients were.
It really was chaos, I would go patient to patient asking for syntoms and tagging them but it seemed like there was a never ending amount of them. There was also a couple of guys here and there trying to cause of ruckus which wasn't helping us at all.
I was starting to get seaty so I got up to take a breath when this guy next to me got up on a chair. I turned my attention to him and he was holding a granade.
"Everyone get back!" I yelled getting everyone's attention. I few yelps came from here and there.
"You thought Ebola was a nightmare...I am the apocalypse!" he pulled the pin of the granade.
I was about to jump forward towards him when I felt a pair of arms grab me and pull me back, and at the same time Kelly had jumped in front of me and pushed the guy back.
"GET DOWN!" I yelled as I felt myself getting pulled back.
Seconds later my ears were ringing and I couldn't hear anything, I felt dizzy and my vision was blurry. I felt someone put a hand on my back. I turned and saw Jay's brother Will. His mouth was moving but I couldn't hear anything.
"What?" I breathed blinking hard to try to see clearly.
"-okay?" I heard the last word.
"Yeah, yes I'm fine." I looked around and realized Will was the one who had grabbed me before the grenade exploded, he had pulled me behind the counter. "KELLY!" I quickly got up and looked for him.
He was lying face down next to what was left of the attacker. I ran to him "HERE HELP!" I yelled and turned him around slowly. Otis kneeled beside me. Kelly had a gash on his head and a wound in his chest. "Oh God!" I tried to keep it together.
"He's barely got a pulse." Otis spoke to me placing his fingers on the side of his neck.
Will then ran over. "I'm sorry but we can't save him." He said ready to tag him black.
I grabbed his collar and pulled him towards me. "I swear to god Will Halstead if you don't do everything in your power to save this man I will cut him open myself and get the job done! He's a man worth saving, so you better get him inside an O.R now! " I yelled at him.
His breath hitched before he nodded. "Ok, help me." He turned to Otis. Gabby rolled a stretcher over and we lifted Kelly onto it. I knew he was in good hands now so I had to try to contact the team now. I took out my phone and lukily it was still working.

I rang Voight but he didn't pick up. I then rang Nadia knowing she would.
___
We were sitting at our desks when Nadia got a call. "Y/n hey." She smiled at her friends voice. "What?!" She then said loudly earning everyone's attention. "Ok ok wait." She put the phone down but didn't hang up and ran to Voight's office.
"Sarge! A guy with a grenade blew himself up at Chicago Med-" My heart dropped, this couldn't be happening again. Before she could finish I ran to grab the phone.
"y/n!" I called her name just wanting to hear her voice, to know she was ok.
"Jay?" I could barely hear her from all the screaming and yelling.
"Are you ok? What happened?" I asked.
"I'm fine Jay, so is Will but you guys have to get here, this guy he said something about Ebola, I think he was contaminated with something before he blew himself up. Everyone here is at risk but we need you to come. The chief's here." There was more yelling behind her "Just get here, I have to go." she finished before hanging up.
I turned and saw the team was all staring at me. "Is she okay?" Adam asked me and I saw the concern in his face.
"She said she's fine, but we need to go." I quickly explained what she had told me throught the phone.
_____
It was madness in the hospital, I tried helping as much as I could but I couldn't stop thinking about Kelly. He was hurt bad and he was looking worse and worse. Will was working with a doctor from a scientific facilty trying to figure out what this guy had and if it was as bad as he claimed it to be.
People were definetly panicking now, wanting nothing more than to get out and I didn't blame them, and all I could do was try my best to reassure them we were doing everything we could to ensure they all got out safely. I noticed the guys from 51 were worried about something else.
I made my way to Casey. "What's wrong?" I asked him quietly.
"There's a fire on the roof, but we don't have enough extinguishers to put it out." He whispered back.
"Ok, I'll call the team see if I can get some more here." I told him. I took out my phone and this time I called Jay knowing he was going to answer for sure. Before he could bombard me with questions again I jumped straight to what I needed. he assured me he would get us what we needed and I hung up.
____
Even though y/n told me she was okay I couldn't help but keep worrying about her. It seemed like every time she was away from me she found herself in trouble, and some part of me couldn't help but think it was my fault for letting her go alone.
I was outside at a tent put up for police trying to find a reason for the attack. I'd talked to the parents and was able to find where this guy worked at, I already had officers going there. While I waited I wanted nothing more than to go in there and check on her.
I approached Boden by the entrance. "How are things Chief?" I asked him.
"The fire's been put out on the ceiling, people are still in a panic though, the quicker we can get everyone out of there the better. Have you found anything new?" He asked me.
"We've got officers heading to the lab this guy worked in, trying to see if they have any answers for us." I told him.
Boden nodded. "Good, let's pray it's not what he claimed."
"Chief have you seen y/n? Do you know if she's ok?" I asked him.
"She's fine, she's doing excelent in there working with my men. Severide, he was injured badly pushing y/n away from the blast, we don't know his status." Boden told me.
I felt bad now, I felt bad for the way I'd been treating y/n and Kelly, I hated seeing them together. But in the end of the day this attitude I had with them...I was only pushing her away from me and I would've lost her if it wasn't for him.
______
Kelly was stable for now. We were waiting for the results to come back, the results that would tell us whether we would live, be permanantly affected or potentially die. I stood next to Will, we held our breaths as the results came through.
"Negative." The doctor finally spoke. "You're good." She said taking off her mask.
Will and I cheered, hugging each other. Our reaction was enough for the rest of the guys to celebrate with us. Soon enough the doors were open and we were helping patients roll out to other hospitals.
I was helping an elder woman walk out when I was met with Jay. I saw him let out a huge sigh before walking over to me. I handed the patient over to a paramedic and seconds later I found myself wrapped tightly around Jay's arms.
"You have to stop doing that." He whispered.
I hugged him back. "I'll try." I tried lightening the mood. He pulled back and looked me up and down checking for injuries.
"y/n I have to say something..." he breathed out
"Jay wait!" I stopped him. I could see he got nervous. "If this is what I think it is then I have to say something first." I took a deep breath. "Look Jay, I like you, I do but I can't start anything with you when you're involved with Erin. I respect her and you but I also respect myself and I don't want you to say or do anything that you will take back and take to Erin later. I'm not just the second option ok, you have to sort things out with her and whatever decision you make that's up to you." I told him. He didn't say anything but I saw him take in what I told him.
He nodded more to himself. "I'm gonna go see how Kelly's doing." I finished before walking back into the hospital.

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
