I had purposefully been ignoring Jay ever since he blew up at me. He tried talking to me several times, coming to my desk, following me to the coffee room, trying to nudge his way into a conversation. I also noticed I had a couple of missed calls from him after shift. I mean call me petty but Trudy always taught me not to take crap from anyone, not even a 'friend'.

"Ok, so I'll be at the hospital all afternoon helping out at the run. I'll see you tonight." I told Trudy as I walked out of the district.

I opened the door to head down the steps and I found myself standing in front of a surprised Jay. I tried to keep walking past him.

"Y/n wait, please" He grabbed my arm.

"I'm late to the hospital I need to go." I pulled my arm out of his grip.

"Please y/n can we talk?." He tried to stop me again.

"I don't have time for this Jay." I tried to walk away but he pressed his hand against the door.

"Y/n please I'm sorry." I waited for him to continue.

"Ok, now let me leave." I rolled my eyes annoyed.

"y/n please." He repeated

"Jay please what? What do you want to hear from me? You know I have been nothing but a good friend to you, I'm always there when you need me and all you ever do is push me away so I've had enough, I'm tired of being your punching bag Jay, now please let me leave."

He opened his mouth to speak but stopped himself. I angrily nodded before pushing his arm out of the way "Great talk" I said before walking out and leaving.

______

I was with Kim trying to set up a tent with Casey and Gabby. Casey came over to help us and introduced himself to Kim while Gabby went inside the hospital.

"I have to use the bathroom, are you alright for me to go?" I asked Kim.

"Sure, I'll wait for you here with Zoe," Kim answered me.

I headed inside the hospital and went straight to the bathroom. I was washing my hands when I heard a huge blast then everything went black.

____

Trudy was sitting at her desk looking through her emails when the phones started going off like crazy. She picked up the phone closest to her while looking up at the tv to see if there was something she missed. She dropped the phone.

'Explosion at Hospital Run, Casualties still unknown' the writing gliding across the tv read while images of the attack played out. Trudy's heart dropped but she knew she couldn't get distracted now. She saw Adam coming down the steps.

"Ruzek" She pointed at the tv "Get Voight now! y/n and Burgess are there." Adam felt a knot in his throat as he ran up the stairs.

"Sarge! The explosion, y/n, and Kim are there. We have to go." He shouted as soon as he was audible.

As soon as Jay registered what was going on he felt sick to his stomach, you could be dead. He got up and was ready to run out of there.

"Halstead, Ruzek you get over there as fast as you can and find them, I don't care what you have to do. The rest of you we're gonna focus on figuring out who's responsible for this." Voight hollered at the team.

Adam and Jay ran down the stairs and to their cars driving like crazy to get to you. Adam got on the phone with Casey knowing he was there.

"Hey man, you alright?" He asked before jumping to what he really wanted to know.

"No, it's a blood bath here man," Casey said trying to catch his breath.

"Have you seen y/n or Kim?" He then asked.

"Kim's with me but..." He paused.

"what Matt?" Adam pressed him.

"y/n she was inside, I haven't heard anything from her," Casey told him calmly.

"We're on our way." Adam's voice broke but he knew he needed to keep his composure.

____

I woke up and the first thing I felt was immense pain in my legs. I screamed. I looked down and saw a pipe had gone through my right thigh and was digging into my left. That was the biggest of my worries until I noticed there was water flowing out of a pipe below me and the water was slowly rising. I put a palm to my forehead but winced when I felt a couple of glass shards in my skin.

"No no no." I started whispering to myself. "HELP!" I started yelling although it was hard with all the dust I had inhaled.

I looked around trying to see if there was any way out. There was a small hole above me where I could see the sky and hear screams and sirens.

"SOMEBODY HELP!!" I kept yelling hoping someone, anyone would hear me. I started looking for my phone but noticed it was in my right pocket where the pipe had gone through. I then started looking around for anything else that could help me get out of here. There were pieces of a broken mirror a couple of meters away from me that I could use to reflect light but I wouldn't be able to reach it without moving.

"This can't be happening right now." I talked to myself knowing that if the water kept rising I would have no other option than to move to try to get out, no matter how painful that would be. For now, all I could hope was that the water would make the mirror pieces float closer to me.

____

Jay and I pulled up to the hospital and it took us both a moment to take in the madness around us. I turned and saw Jay run up to Severide.

"Have you seen y/n?" He asked Kelly.

"No, Casey told us she was in there but we haven't heard anything, we've got everyone looking for her and Gabby. We'll find her man, she owes me a date." He patted Jay before running off to continue helping.

Jay stood there for a second before he turned to look at me "We have to find her Adam." His eyes watered.

"I know." I tried to keep my composure. "C, mon Casey said she went to the bathroom, let's ask someone who knows's where that would be," I suggested and we both ran off to what was left of the hospital.

"Alec!" Jay spotted late Julie's husband while he treated a patient. "y/n was here, she was at the toilet when the bomb went off..."

"There's 3 by the entrance-" Alec cut me off before we could finish and told us where we should look before running off to treat more patients.

______

The water was by my waist now but the glass pieces were still stuck to a piece of the wall so there was no way they were budging. I had been screaming for so long but I knew I only had so long left before I passed out and I had to use my time wisely.

"Ok, you've got this y/n, you can do this," I whispered to myself. I lifted the pipe and my leg at the same time and tried to move it as far as possible so that I could shift my body a little at a time. But this came with blood-curdling screams and sobbing every time.

______

Adam ran to the left side while I ran to the right. It was so loud it was hard to hear anything. "y/n!" Adam and I yelled over and over again moving pieces of rubble around.

I stopped and just punched the ground out of frustration causing me to cut my knuckles open. But before I lost all hope I heard a scream that made my heart stop. I ran towards the source and heard sobbing coming from a small hole. I looked down and saw y/n, her head plopped to the side as she sobbed. I reached down but only my arm fit and I couldn't do much.

"y/n!" I yelled seeing there was water up to her neck and rising.

"Jay!" She looked up to see me. "Am I dead?" She whispered to herself closing her eyes. She lifted her hand up to me. Our fingertips just grazed.

"No, you're not! stay awake for me, we're gonna get you out of there," I reassured her. "HELP! BODEN! HERE!" I shouted at the guys from 51. They quickly ran over.

When I looked back y/n was stretching her neck out as the water started covering her face, her arm flopped back to her side. I tried to remove rocks but I didn't have the strength. "NO NO NO, y/n breathe, take a deep breath," I screamed at her trying my hardest to reach her.

"Jay I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I forgive you." She said before the water completely covered her.

I felt someone pull me back. I watched as the firemen got to work not knowing what state she was in. After what felt like forever I saw Kelly pull her wet limp body out of the now enlarged hole and place her on a stretcher. I felt useless, but at the same time I couldn't move, my body wouldn't respond.

"She swallowed a lot of water," Kelly said as he started doing CPR on her. Water spurted out of her mouth with each compression until she started coughing and trying to breathe on her own.

She took a huge breath. "You just had to kiss me again didn't you?" She half-smiled at Kelly making him laugh.

"y/n!" I was finally able to get up and I ran over to her. "You're ok, you're gonna be ok." I tried reassuring her as I saw her drifting in and out of consciousness.

"She's lost a lot of blood she needs to go to another hospital right now," Boden instructed and Otis and Cruz started carrying the stretcher away.

"Get her in my car, it'll be faster," I told them as Adam ran to us looking at y/n speechless.

"I'll drive," Adam said as he got into my car, I got in the back with y/n.

_____

My vision was completely blurry. I felt myself being carried on a stretcher but every sound was muffled. I remember looking up at Jay, in the car, I felt him grab my hand before I closed my eyes again for what felt to me like 3 seconds.

I opened my eyes and my head was pounding. Once my eyes refocused I recognized Chicago Med. I tried to sit up but wailed in pain.

"Oh no no no honey, don't move. You're really busted up." Trudy stood up from a chair next to my bed.

"Trudy, wait how did I get here? oh my god where's Gabby? Kim? her niece? Casey?" My mind started racing.

"Shhh shhh shhh, everyone's ok. Let me get the Ethan" Trudy reassured me.

Dr. Choi came in. "Hey y/n, you were pretty busted up when you got here. The bones in your right thigh were completely crushed, you had a stab wound to your left thigh, you had a fair amount of water in your lungs, multiple lacerations to your face and body, and a severe concussion."

"Just that?" I joked.

Trudy and Ethan laughed. "Y/n you were out for 3 days, during which days we performed multiple surgeries to repair the bones in your thigh. We'll need to keep you here for a couple more days, you'll also need therapy for your leg but we expect you to make a full recovery. "

"Wait how about work?" I started getting worried.

"I'm sorry but you won't be able to do any fieldwork for a while," Ethan told me.

Ethan walked out and Jay rushed in soon after. "good morning sunshine" he smiled and walked over to hug me.

"Easy there buddy, I texted you cause you wouldn't stop bugging me about her not because I wanted you to run in here and put your hands all over her." Trudy rolled her eyes at him.

"Trudy!" I waved her off. She stepped out of the room.

"Listen, I know you didn't want to hear it but I am so sorry about being a jerk to you, I don't know what I would've done if I'd lost you.." Jay started rambling.

"Just promise me you'll talk to me in the future instead of pushing me away. I care about you and no matter what happens I always will." I told him trying to sit up.

He helped me readjust myself before sitting on the edge of the bed. "I promise." He took my hand and shot me a smile.

_____

I was getting out of the hospital today, I still needed to come back every day for therapy but there was nothing more that I wanted than to sleep in my own bed and get back to work. Trudy helped me get dressed and pack my stuff up and then all I had left was to get on the wheelchair and roll my way out of here.

A nurse came in with a wheelchair. "Alright, let's do this." I took a deep breath preparing myself for the pain of trying to get up and off the bed.

Trudy and the nurse came to my side and helped me scoot to the edge of the bed. "Take your time, don't rush." Trudy rubbed my back noticing me trying to bear the pain.

"Ok, let's go." I took another deep breath ready to get off the bed but was interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Hey sis, Voight let us stop by." Adam politely tapped the nurse so she would move.

"We're getting you out of here. I mean we found you so we got dibs on your release day." Jay replaced Trudy on my left side.

Trudy shrugged as she grabbed the wheelchair. "It doesn't work like that Halstead."

"Well, we're here anyway so let's do this. Ready?" Adam asked me.

I once more mentally prepared myself for the pain but before I knew it Jay and Adam had lifted me up and plopped me down on the wheelchair, with me feeling barely any pain at all.

"That was way easier than I thought." I smiled at them both.

Trudy started wheeling me out. "Hey hey hey let me ride on the back," Adam suggested and Trudy shot him a threatening glare making Jay and I laugh.

"Oh, my bag, I forgot it back in the room," I remembered.

"Ruzek go get it, I'll go pull the car out front," Trudy instructed.

"Halstead, wheel her out to the front but keep your horny hands to yourself." She glared at him.

"Trudy!" I blushed and I saw Jay's surprised and speechless face. "Sorry about that just ignore her." I laughed.

"How are you feeling?" Jay asked me once we made it to the front.

"Still in a lot of pain but I'm just glad to be alive. Which reminds me that I never thanked you, Jay. If you hadn't found me when you did then I wouldn't be here so...Thank you." I took his hand and squeezed it but when I was about to let go he held it tighter.

"I would've turned every single stone until I found you. Trust me on that." Jay spoke with a smile but in a more serious tone.

We then saw Trudy pull up and Jay quickly let go of my hand.

"I saw that!" Trudy yelled as soon as she hopped out of the car earning a laugh from both Jay and me.
