《The Amber Paladin》Confronting the beast

You were in the Blue Lion, on your way back to the castle. You had gotten Slav out of Beta Traz. And even though your mission was a success, you were feeling lousy. Even though there were four others with you in the Lion, you were still feeling somewhat lonely.

It didn't help your mood at all, that Slav was constantly complaining, or asking questions, or telling what not to do. It hadn't even been that long since you got out of Beta Traz, and you were already tired of him. You just wanted to tie and muzzle him up, even though you would never do that. That wouldn't be very nice.

You were sitting on the floor, leaning your back against Lance's chair while letting out a long sigh, straight from your heart. And that's when you heard Slav's voice again. "That kind of a gesture can only mean frustration, which in most cases leads to lack of concentration, which is the cause of 90 percent of all accidents in this and all other realities." He explained to you.

You immediately turned to glare at Slav, but he just continued. "If you all just concentrated, it would remarkably increase our chances of survival, so that our mission doesn't result in a horrific, deadly fireball." Slav then said, looking at you with wide eyes, shivering a bit.

That's when you buried your head in your hands. You really weren't in the mood to listen to him. But as you were ready to say something offensive back, Pidge suddenly stopped you. "All right, enough. Let's call Allura and let her know that we're ready for her to use the teludav." She said while changing the subject, not letting you badmouth Slav. And you immediately shut your mouth, slightly embarrassed of what you were about to say. Instead you just let out a sigh while getting up. "You're right Pidge."

But just then Slav suddenly waved his hands. "You didn't say we'd be traveling by teludav!" He yelled. And that's when you all stopped and turned to look at him wide eyed. Oh boy, what now!?

Slav's words immediately made Shiro tense up. He tried to hide it, but his right eye was twitching. He had enough of Slav's complaints and now he was about to explode. "What's the problem? We're traveling by teludav! So just count your hair follicles or fluff a pillow, or whatever you need to do to make sure we survive the wormhole trip in this reality!" He yelled, his face all red.

Then it got silent in the Blue Lion as everyone just stared at Shiro. You had never seen him that irritated. But then Slav spoke in a quiet voice while fiddling with his fingers. "I was just going to point out that the teludav is a very efficient form of travel." He said, sounding apologetic.

Just then, Allura's anxious voice suddenly interrupted everyone. "Paladins, are you there?" She asked, her image appearing on the Blue Lion's screen. And immediately everyone turned their attention to her. She seemed really troubled.

"Princess, what's happening?" Lance asked straight away. "That monster that attacked us on the Balmera before, has returned!" Allura explained panic lingering in her voice. "What?" You all gasped in unison, even Slav, who had no idea what she was talking about. But how can that be? Last time the Balmera captured the beast, covering it whole with crystals. What had happened?

"I need you back here immediately!" Allura then ordered. "Of course! We'll come straight away!" You replied, not even hesitating. "You got it Princess. Sharpshooter is on the way." Lance answered with a sly tone in his voice. "Sharpshooter?" Pidge asked curiously. "It's my new nickname that I gave myself. Just pass it on." Lance just stated.

"Ready when you are, Allura." Shiro then said, totally disregarding Lance praising himself. And immediately a wormhole appeared in front of the Blue Lion. "Thank you Princess." Shiro said as Lance guided the Lion to the wormhole.

You emerged from the wormhole at the same time as the Yellow Lion emerged from another. And in front of you really was the same creature you had battled before on Balmera. It was the same huge red ro-beast with long arms and green eyes. Although the eyes were no more as it was lacking a head. Instead it had a large crystal growing out of its chest and two floating crystal shields surrounding it. And it was attacking the castle with full force.

"But we saw Balmera stopping that thing!?" You gasped at the sight in front of you. What had happened? Had the ro-beast been hibernating the whole time? Did it harness the power of the crystals before waking up? What made it wake up all of a sudden?

"I know. Guess we have to be the ones that beat it this time." Shiro then said determined, looking straight at the ro-beast. And just then, it fired a huge beam towards you. "Whoa! How is that thing even operational? It doesn't have a head!" Lance exclaimed as he evaded the beam.

"I don't know, but I'm sure it has something to do with those crystals." Pidge reasoned. But Shiro just wanted to act. "We can't worry about that now. We have to protect the castle." He said while urging you to move on. At the same time Slav had a small breakdown as he paced around the Lion yelling something which you didn't quite understand. And that just made you sigh. He was only making the situation worse.

Then you heard Keith's voice on the intercom. He was in the Yellow Lion with Hunk. "How did we beat it last time?" He asked wondering if the same tactic would work again. And as you heard his voice, you felt the same unnerving empty feeling in you. For a moment you had been able to forget about it since you had been so concentrated on Slav. But now it came rushing back.

"We formed Voltron, then I stuck in my Bayard and shot it with my blaster right in its arm lasers. But that didn't stop it, so then we had to punch it." Hunk started explaining what had happened last time. "So, we're gonna need Voltron." Shiro then just said.

"But we only have two Lions." Pidge stated the obvious. "Well, maybe we can form the legs and kick it?" Lance then asked sincerely, and immediately everyone in the Blue Lion turned to look at him frowning. Was he being serious?

Just then the ro-beast fired another powerful beam towards the Lions, but Lance and Hunk both skillfully dodged the beam. And when the ro-beast stopped, two moons behind you exploded to pieces after getting hit by it.

As the pressure wave from the explosion started spreading, you got surrounded by dust. The Lion was shaking like massive turbulence had hit it and the visibility got really bad. And as you looked at the destruction caused by just one beam, you got silent. Was the ro-beast more powerful than before?

"That new laser is much more powerful. We're definitely gonna need all the Lions." Shiro then stated what you had realised too. "Hunk, you distract it so we can fly into the castle. Once we get our Lions, we'll cover you so you can fly Keith in for Red." Shiro then ordered. And you didn't even wait for his response before Lance started to fly the Blue Lion towards the castle, leaving Hunk and Keith to distract the ro-beast.

"Wait, wait, wait. I have to hold that thing off by myself?" Hunk then asked worried while he was left there alone. "You have Keith." Pidge just stated bluntly. "Yeah, but he's in here with me!" Hunk almost yelled back. And that's when you let out an amused sigh. "Keith can still help you. He's an excellent pilot. Just listen to him." You just said to Hunk before even thinking of what you were saying.

Then there was a small silence before you heard anything from the other side. "Yeah...I guess..." Keith stated a bit hesitantly, almost like he wanted to say something else to you. And as you heard his voice again, suddenly your heart started beating faster. Suddenly you felt this nervous but warm feeling in your stomach, like you were anticipating something.

But just then, as you were closing in on the castle, a huge beam suddenly hit its particle barrier, making it flicker like it was getting weaker. And then it disappeared wholly. And you all gasped. "We have to hurry!" You exclaimed aloud, knowing that the castle wouldn't endure any more hits. But all you could do was to hope that Keith and Hunk would draw the ro-beast's attention before that.

When the Blue Lion landed inside the castle, you just ran to your Lion as fast as you could. "Surprise. We're in a rush again." You just said sarcastically to her as you sat down on the chair. Then your Lion roared defiantly, immediately soaring out of the castle. She was so brave.

As you flew out of the hangar, you saw how the Yellow Lion was skillfully evading all the shots fired at it in the distance. Hunk was dodging, diving and doing barrel rolls. And that's when you smirked. Good work Keith. He was probably doing some backseat driving. He was such a good pilot. His instincts helped him reacting and thinking quickly. And suddenly a thought came to your mind. Was it because of his Galra blood that his instincts were so sharp?

You arrived to the scene at the same time as Lance. "I'll distract it! Go get the Red Lion!" Lance informed them as he started shooting at the ro-beast immediately. "I'm right behind you Lance!" You informed him straight after. "Oh, good timing!" Hunk answered you happily, relieved that he wasn't alone anymore. And then the Yellow Lion turned around and started heading back to the castle.

Just then you realised that a huge beam was coming straight at you. You quickly evaded it while cursing at the same time. "Lance, we can't let it shoot this way or the castle will be goners!" You said to him strictly.

But just then you heard Keith's and Hunk's screams on the intercom, startling you. "Guys!" Lance yelled, calling out to them. And as you turned around, you saw the Yellow Lion falling down towards a planet below you. Had the beam hit them? "Keith? What's happening?" You asked concerned.

"Keith! Hunk!" You yelled again, but didn't get a response. "No no no no..." You muttered to yourself as the Yellow Lion kept on falling so fast to the planet's atmosphere that it started to burn up. But just then you heard Shiro's voice on the intercom. "I'll get them!" He said, just getting out of the castle.

Shiro immediately flew towards the Yellow Lion, taking a hold of it, stopping its fall. "We need to protect them!" Pidge then yelled, just getting out of the castle too. "Right!" You answered as you shook you head, trying to concentrate on what you had to do. You needed to go help Lance who was trying to distract the ro-beast all alone at the moment.

You, Pidge and Lance started firing at the ro-beast with everything you got. But it just kept blocking every shot with its crystal shields. It was just so fast that it blocked everything, even though there were three against one. It was so much stronger than last time. But heck, so were you. You should be able to defeat it.

Just then you had an idea. "Hey, maybe this thing can't block something that isn't physical?" You pondered aloud. "What do you mean?" Pidge asked puzzled. "I'm gonna try something!" You then said while flying your Lion a bit further.

"Alright girl, let's do it." You said to your Lion. And that's when she let out a loud roar as you pulled the other handle quickly, making her open her mouth and shoot an energy pulse. The same one you had been using before against Zarkon's fighter planes.

As the energy pulse reached the ro-beast, it couldn't block it. But it also didn't stop. The energy pulse didn't overload the ro-beast, like it had done with the fighter planes. It seemed to do nothing. "Umm, what...?" You mumbled to yourself. So much for your great plan.

"(Y/N), that thing probably isn't mechanical anymore." Pidge tried to come up with a reason. But that just made you slouch your shoulders and let out a deep sigh. Great, one more thing to add to your helplessness counter. That day sucked. Big time.

Just then your Lion roared quietly. "It's not your fault." You said while looking at the ro-beast. And straight after you let out an irritated sigh. "Fine!" You just commented as you started shooting it again with the same old lasers. It really seemed that there was nothing more you could do. You were feeling really frustrated. You were mentally defeated.

Pretty much after that you, Pidge and Lance were circling around the ro-beast, trying to land a hit. But it just kept on blocking everything. It was impossible, and so frustrating. You needed Voltron. "I'm getting real sick of that crystal. Let's take it out." Lance said, clearly irritated too.

But even though how much you tried, the ro-beast just kind of ignored your puny lasers. And then it started to head towards the castle again. "Shiro, it's coming your way!" You yelled, informing him while still trying to draw the ro-beast's attention. "I got it." Shiro just said quite calmly while letting go of the Yellow Lion, which was still not moving.

Then Shiro formed the jawblade as he closed in on the ro-beast. He clashed multiple times with it, but still, it seemed to do nothing. So he stopped. "It just keeps on blocking everything." He then stated, clearly frustrated too. Your attacks really did not do anything. You needed to form Voltron fast, before everyone would be sick of frustration.

But just then the ro-beast changed its direction again and started flying towards the Yellow Lion. "Oh no you don't!" You exclaimed as you realised what it was about to do, immediately starting to shoot at it as hard as you could. But it just disregarded your shots and kept closing in on Hunk and Keith.

That's when you heard Hunk's happy voice on the intercom. "Hey, my Lion's working again! I'm back, baby!" He cheered as the Yellow Lion seemed to regain its energy back, finally moving. "Hunk, watch out!" You tried to warn him, but it was already too late. Hunk had no time to react as the ro-beast took a hold of the Yellow Lion. All you heard was his desperate sigh. "Oh no, not again."

And even though you still tried to shoot the ro-beast to get it away from Hunk, it didn't help. The ro-beast was getting ready to shoot at the Yellow Lion from close range, and you knew they wouldn't survive that shot, it was too close.

But just then suddenly a fiery shot hit straight at the ro-beast. The Yellow Lion got loose from its grip as it couldn't block the shot. "Sorry I'm late, guys." You heard Keith's content voice on the intercom. And that's when you got speechless. You thought that he was still in the Yellow Lion. When did he get out? Hunk hadn't taken him back to the castle, but there he was, flying the Red Lion.

That's when you shook your head in slight amusement. He was such a show off. Always making a grand entrance. And his voice sounded like he was already feeling better. Like nothing was wrong.

And now that there were finally six of you, you took the advantage and started targeting the ro-beast from different sides. But even if it couldn't block all of the shots anymore, your lasers still didn't do much damage. "We can't keep on shooting it like this forever." You then said while firing another shot. And just then Pidge raised her voice. "I think I've got an idea. See if you can get me an open shot at its chest!" She asked. "I can do that! You guys just keep on shooting at it!" Lance then said to everyone.

So you just kept on shooting at the ro-beast. And when it blocked the shots with the crystal shields, Lance suddenly shot at them with his ice beam, making the crystals freeze together.

And then Pidge took advantage of the moment and shot the ro-beast's chest with her vine gun. Immediately the vines burst through it, rendering it immobile for a moment. And then it was your chance. "Nice job Pidge, now let's form Voltron!" Shiro ordered and you all agreed.

You soared upwards in total unison. The Lions roared loudly and started to transform, everything clicking into place as the magnetism pulled you together. You formed Voltron, and immediately after that, you formed the sword, just like you had done the last time you fought with the same ro-beast.

Voltron took a tight hold of the sword with both hands as Lance and Hunk speeded up the momentum, you boosting them up. And as you flew straight towards the ro-beast, the sword pointing at it, you all yelled, putting everything you had in maximizing the speed and power. And just as the ro-beast turned towards you, it tried to shield itself with the crystals. But just then you collided with it and a massive pressure wave emerged from the impact.

That's when you stopped. You were still and the ro-beast was still. It felt like time had stopped. And when the pressure wave cooled down, you saw the sight in front of you. Your sword had cut straight through the crystal shields and into the chest of the ro-beast.

Electricity started bursting through the ro-beast's chest, from where your sword had hit. And then it just exploded into bits. And as you silently looked at the pieces floating all around you, you realised that you had really done it. You had finally gotten rid of it, for good. It really proved that you had gotten much stronger during this journey. "Great work Paladins! Now return to the castle so we can get back to Olkarion." Allura then said to you happily.

You disbanded Voltron and flew back to the castle. And you were feeling pretty satisfied. You really had improved, and it felt pretty damn good. "Thank you." You said to your Lion when you had landed. And she purred kindly back. "I have really enjoyed this journey with you, gorgeous." You then added with a smile before getting out.

You all arrived to the control room pretty much simultaneously. And as you walked in, you looked around, wanting to see Keith. You wanted to see if he was actually feeling better already. And as your eyes met with his, you gave him a small and careful smile. But when he averted his gaze, your smile cooled down. Maybe you were trying too hard?

Then you all gathered around Allura, who was standing in front of the holographic screen. Coran was in Olkarion, monitoring the building of the giant teludav. Slav on the other hand was leaning on the control panel, pressing all the buttons, probably doing something that you wouldn't understand anyways.

"Allura, have you heard from Coran?" Keith then asked, wanting to know about the progression of the teludav. But Allura just stood there, her back facing you, not really reacting to what Keith asked. And then, after a moment, she finally turned around, her arms crossed and a dissatisfied look in her eyes. "Yes." She just answered plainly.

You frowned as you saw Allura glaring at Keith like he was an untrustworthy stranger all of a sudden. And Keith immediately averted his gaze, somewhat disappointed. Her attitude probably didn't help his own struggles at all. And even though you wanted to say something, you had no idea what to say. You were feeling somewhat disoriented.

But then Lance broke the awkward silence. "So, are we ready to pop through the wormhole and get back to Olkarion?" He asked, trying to ease the tension. And suddenly Allura's mood changed as she answered Lance happily. "Yes, I've checked in with Coran and the teludav is nearly complete."
