《FALLEN》CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE.

I sat in my office, finishing up a few a pieces of paperwork, which I needed to hand in. Over the past week, I had been cooped up in my office. Spending both my lunch and dinner breaks inside of my office. By myself.

And there were two reasons for that.

One, I was too busy with all the paperwork I had to give in, which was all because of a new nurse joining the team. I didn't know much about her, but Daniel had said she was a bubbly blonde, with big grey eyes. Other than that, I knew nothing. That's all I got.

And two, because I was avoiding someone. Well, not exactly avoiding, but along the lines of it. I could honestly say I was still hurting about what Sam had said. His words, they were still fresh in my mind - no matter if I wanted them there or not. They just seemed to linger,

Ironically enough, my therapy sessions the entire week had been cancelled. That was all because of Mr Joan's and a specialist of some sort, had come in to check over my work and how I was settling in. Apparently, my working standard was highly acceptable and they wanted to use some of my notes as an example to the incoming nurse.

Of course I was hesitant to agree because I didn't want to, but gave a random patients notes - nothing too personal. I just made sure it wasn't Sam's.

My heart tugged in sadness when I thought back to him. A big part of me felt foolish...foolish for admitting my true feelings for him, yet I didn't receive a reply. Then I asked if we were over or not and again - I didn't receive a reply.

You could only imagine all the negative thoughts running through my mind.

Pushing my thoughts aside, I inhaled a deep breath and decided it was time for me to finish up the remainder of my paperwork. I had only a small pile left to do.

Making my way down the prison corridors with a large cardboard box, holding my paperwork - it wasn't exactly easy. I received a few curious glances from some inmates, as well as guards, but I just ignored them. It was just a cardboard box.

Clearing my throat, I finally found myself stopping outside Mr Joan's office. I shuffled the box to one side of my hip as I used my free hand to knock on the door.

"Come in," I heard the familiar voice yell. Exhaling, I turned the door open and nearly dropped my box filled with paperwork onto the ground.

"Oh, careful there, Belle." Mr Joan's chuckled, coming around to help me with box. I flashed a small smile, letting him take the box from me.

"All paperwork done?" He questioned, glancing up at me from the box. I nodded, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

"Good," He smiled, and yet again, his eyes lingered a little.

"Come in, I have someone here I'd like you to meet." He motioned for me to come in. Frowning in confusion, I closed the door behind me and stepped further into the room. That's when I saw a bubbly looking blonde with big grey eyes, sweetly smiling at me.

Daniel's description was surprisingly accurate..

"Belle, this Maddie. Maddie, this is Belle." He introduced us to one another. I put on a smile, which she returned. However, I never failed to notice the way her eyes grazed over my body. It was almost as if she were checking me out.

I pushed my unusual thoughts to aside.

"Hi, it's nice to meet you." I politely greeted. Her eyes lingered on me and a smirk like smile drew onto her pink painted lips.

"Hey, it's lovely to meet you, too." She said, almost purring. I felt a little awkward. I cleared my throat and turned my attention back to Mr Joan's. Who as always, was looking at me. Well, more like staring.

"Maddie will be the new nurse joining," He told me, new information for my ears. I nodded, flashing another smile at her.

"I'm so excited! And I can't wait to get to know you, Belle." She chirped, almost jumping on spot.

"Isn't she great?" Mr Joan's cackle caught my attention.

"Sure is perky," I murmured to myself.

"Any who, I have your new schedule, and you both can decide on which part of the day you would rather like. And Belle, since you have gotten used to the patients, you can choose which ones you would like to keep and the ones you wouldn't mind handing over to Maddie." He firmly told me.

"Oh, uh, alright." I mumbled, nodding my head.

"Well, would you rather have 9AM to 4PM. Or 6PM till 11PM?" He questioned me. I was a little taken aback from having to decide on the spot, but hurriedly thought when Sam would have his therapy sessions. I always had him at seven in the afternoon, and even though we weren't on talking terms - I didn't want Maddie to have him.

"I'll take 6 till 11," I told him, smiling small. He nodded, handing me a yellow colored sheet. I thanked him, my eyes skimming over paper. A breath of relief left my lips when I saw the familiar name written in bold.

"Alright, now that's decided, you're free to go." He dismissed. I flashed another polite smile my way, before turning on my heels. However, that's when he stopped me.

"Oh, sorry, Belle. I forgot. Would you mind showing, Maddie around the prison? Since she's new and isn't familiar to the prison grounds." He trailed off. I opened my mouth to decline, seeing as I didn't want to spend my day showing someone around. But, the kind side of me spoke for me.

"Sure," I forced a smile. He sighed in relief, motioning for Maddie to follow me. She did without hesitating. Once again, she flashed that smile-smirk she had when I first saw her.

"Let's go," I mumbled, opening the door and stepping outside.

"This should be fun." I heard her say.

Definitely.

The saying 'Never judge a book by its cover' - is something, alright.

When I first saw Maddie, I didn't expect for her to be so...so easy to talk to. As well as get along. I thought she was going to be constantly talking about rainbows and unicorns, seeing how perky she naturally was. But to my surprise, she turned out be...alright.

"I like your tattoo." I commented, as we strolled through the prison field. She was wearing a tight-fitting short sleeve shirt, exposing her arm. On her wrist was a rainbow, with the word ' written underneath.

My brows furrowed, I had seen that sign somewhere before. But I couldn't remember where exactly.

"Oh, thanks. I got it two years ago...you know, when I officially came out of the closet." She shyly admitted. I furrowed my brows.

"I don't follow..." I trailed off. She nervously gulped.

"I'm lesbian, Belle." She blurted out, blushing a coat of red. My mouth parted and my eyes widened in realization.

"That's it, I thought I saw it somewhere." I shook my head at myself. She nervously chuckled, making me raise my brows.

"You alright?" I softly asked. She narrowed her eyes at me, almost as if she was reading me.

"You...uh, you don't mind?" She squeaked out. I rolled my eyes, shaking my head with a smile.

"Of course not. I was just a little surprised, but no, it doesn't bother me." I shot her a reassuring smile. A breath of relief left her lips and she smiled, widely.

"Thanks, Belle."

"There's no reason to thank me. I'm not one to judge. But when you first saw me...you were checking me out, weren't you?" I asked, narrowing my eyes. She smirked, raising her hands up in playful surrender.

"Guilty," She shyly admitted. I rolled my eyes, chuckling at her.

Silence soon washed across the air and side by side, we made our way around the prison. I had showed her nearly every part of the prison, but just had the most important place left. The cafeteria. Coincidentally enough, it was our lunch break.

"So, where to next, Blue?" She asked, using the nickname she had made up for me. My eyes were blue and my name started with B, therefore it was the perfect name for me. That was her theory.

"Cafeteria, it's lunch break." I told her, clearing my throat a little. She nodded, surprisingly linking her arms with me and letting me lead the way. I felt a little unusual with her doing that, but pushed it aside. The last time someone had linked arms with me, was when I was twelve.

The time I had friends.

As we made our way to the cafeteria, eyes clocked over to us. Inmates stared at Maddie and I - mostly Maddie, in curiosity. Some inmates whistled, while others just stared. I could truthfully say that Maddie was in-fact, gorgeous. If I had seen her out in public, I would have thought she was model of some sort.

"Why are they all staring?" She whispered in my ear. I chuckled, opening the door which would lead us into the cafeteria.

"Don't worry, you'll get used to it." I firmly told her. She nodded, looking a little hesitant, but smiled it off.

Huh, reminds me of someone.

Pushing my thoughts to aside, we stepped inside the loud, noise-filled room. Inmates wearing different clothing popped into view. I could tell Maddie was curious, since she was making low humming sounds. Instantly, their eyes clocked over to Maddie. I blushed for her.

"Wow, that's a lot of eyes." She laughed. I nodded, bowing my head a little.

"Right," I cleared my throat.

"But, this is the Cafeteria; it's loud." I said to her. She nodded her head in agreement, glancing around.

"Sure is," She whispered to herself.

"B," I heard the familiar voice call. My head snapped over to where Daniel was standing, a surprised grin on his lips. I unlinked my arm from Maddie's and made my way over to him.

"Hey, Dan." I greeted, pulling him into a small hug. He patted my back lightly, before we pulled apart.

"What are you doing here?" He questioned surprised. I didn't blame him. The past week I hadn't stepped foot inside the cafeteria, not wanting to awkwardly lock eyes with Sam. I was still upset about our argument.

"Uh, I'm showing Maddie around. Plus, it's my lunch break, so I thought why not..." I trailed off. His brows furrowed as he peered down at me

"Who's Maddie?" He questioned.

"I am!" I clamped my mouth shut, no longer needing to answer for her. His eyes darted over my shoulder, realization crossing his eyes as he flashed a charming smile her way.

"Oh, Hey there. I'm Daniel. Belle's best friend." He introduced, throwing an arm over my shoulder. I playfully rolled my eyes at him. Her eyes darted up at him and she grinned.

"It's nice to meet you."

He nodded, sending a curt smile back.

"So, we were just about to get lunch. You want to join us?" I asked him.

"Sure, I'm hungry." He shrugged in agreement. Smiling, we made our way over to the line. And once again, a little ounce of guilt built in my stomach as we pushed in. I innocently smiled, making my way to the front.

The usual routine took place. Chirpy, happy, Silva, handed me over a tray full of food. A cheese and cucumber salad, a juice box and plate of custard and cake. Once again, an unusual combination, but I was sure it would taste nice.

It always did.

Daniel and Maddie were quietly talking among one another, hitting it off. I quietly followed behind, walking over to the table we usual sat at. Strangely enough, I felt a little tingle erupt in my stomach, making a little giddy sensation grow inside of me.

He was here.

He was close by.

Swallowing the gulp which had managed to build inside my throat, I pushed my nervous thoughts to aside for the time being. The three of us settled down around the table. It was a round table, so no-one was directly across, or sitting with another.

"So, why'd you choose to become a therapist or nurse...whatever you and Belle do?" He questioned Maddie. She giggled, taking a sip from her juice box.

"Well, my ex-girlfriend, Grace...she had, uh, problems so I wanted to help her. She didn't want professorial help, so I was inspired to major in medicine and psychology. Mainly for her, but it too interested me." She told us. I nodded along, biting into my sandwich.

"Oh, that's cool." Daniel commented, taking a large bite into his sandwich. I held in a chuckle, and rolled my eyes at him.

He seriously needed to work on his table manners.

I glanced down at my sandwich, zoning out their conversation about a movie they both had watched before. I was too busy concentrating on that tingly feeling I was getting. And that's when I felt the familiar feeling of his eyes on me.

Swallowing, I glanced up and slyly around the room. I still didn't catch his eye, until I looked over to the left side of the room. That's when my heart dropped. His were locked on me, his body facing me as he sat around a table with his two friends. I could feel a blush dance onto my cheeks, and my pulse begin to speed up.

However, he broke our gaze, the noticeable tick on his jaw going off. A sigh of sadness left my lips, and I glanced back down at my slice of cheese and cucumber bread.

"Belle, you alright?" Daniel lowly asked. I nodded, forcing a smile.

"H-He's here, Daniel." I whispered back. His eyes shot me a sympathetic smile.

"I-I'm going to go talk to him." I blurted out. His eyes widened and before I could stop myself, I found myself making my way over to his table. My thoughts were running wildly through my mind. As if he could sense my presence, his head shot up and his eyes locked on me.

"Hey there, little lady," I heard Robert greet. I shot him a small smile as well as Josh. They both narrowed their eyes slightly. Clearing my throat, I focused my attention back on Sam.

"Sam, can I speak to you?" I quietly asked. He clenched his jaw, not saying anything.

"Please," I whispered. With great hesitance, he stood up and silently made his way over to the empty corner of the cafeteria. I could feel his friends as well as my friends, eyes on us, following our movement.

When we stood by ourselves, I let out a small breath.

"Sam," I called, so badly wanting to reach out and touch him. But I couldn't, not with where we were standing. And our current situation.

"What do you want, Belle?" He lowly asked, sounding so foreign. I flinched a little, holding in the emotions I wanted to let out.

"H-How are you?" I softly asked.

"Fine. Now, if that's all you wanted to ask me, I'll be on my way," He muttered, glancing away from me.

"W-Why are you being like this?" My voice cracked, feeling tears prick my eyes. A whole week of not speaking and this is how he chooses to respond.

"Bye, Isabelle." He mumbled, using my full name. I watched as he walked away, pulling his hood off his head for head and fixing his beanie. I held in the tears I wanted to let out and stood staring at him. I'm sure I looked like a fool.

But I didn't care.

I just wondered how long it would stay like this.
