《FALLEN》CHAPTER THREE.

My heart was still thumping at an uncontrollable speed when I entered Mr Joan's office. He was dressed proudly in his usual uniform. It was the same as Daniel's, only his dress shirt was a dark blue, while the guards wore black, a sewed logo on their sleeve. There was also a shiny, gold, star-shaped badge on the left of his chest.

When his eyes landed on me, he shot up from his chair. A large grin growing onto his lips.

"Ah, Belle. How nice it is to see you again." He chirped, a set of white teeth in view for my eyes. I mustered up a small smile, trying not to show any signs of discomfort. As I had said before; I felt a strange vibe coming from this man.

"You too." I forced myself to say. A glint waved across his eyes and I think he was pleased to hear me say that.

If only he knew it were a lie.

A small, weary silence danced in the eye and I chewed down on the inside of my cheek. I could feel his eyes on me, traveling from head to toe. I didn't like it - not one bit.

"Take a seat, Belle. Don't just stand there." He finally said, snapping out of his daze. I nodded, pulling on another false smile. I walked over to the empty seat, gently pulling it out before sitting down on it.

I pushed up my glasses, watching as Mr Joan's muttered to himself, sorting through the small pile of paper in-front of him. When he picked up a light blue piece of paper with black ink words on it, he looked up.

"Here's your schedule. Just to show when you'll have your breaks." He informed me. I glanced down at the paper, reading over the black print. It said I would have only two breaks. One for lunch and dinner. I would be working from 8 AM till 9 PM. Unless of course there was an emergency of some sort.

"Of course it's only temporary until we find another nurse, who will share your timetable." He told me. I nodded in response, folding up the piece of paper and tucking it inside of my jean pocket.

"Is that all?" I softly asked. He shook his head, searching through his draw and pulled out two objects. One was a black object, which I had seen before. It was a taser. The other was a black square with a red button placed in the button. It looked tempting to press down on.

"This your taster and call button. Remember, use it only if it's an emergency." He sternly told me, pushing the objects over the table. I nodded in reply, picking up the two objects to examine them.

"How does it work?" I asked, gesturing over to the taser.

"There's an on and off button on the side, just flick it on and press it down on your target." He said, his eyes on me. Clearing my throat, I picked up the two objects.

"Oh and here's a map... Just in case you get lost."

I gratefully took the map, tucking it inside of my pocket.

"That all?" I asked again. He slowly nodded, his teeth peaking out with his grin on his lips.

"You're free to go. But your first shift starts in an hour."

"Okay, uh, thank you."

"My pleasure, Belle." He lowly said and I once again, I inwardly shivered.

After I found out my very first shift started in an hour, I made my way over to my office. Of course with the help of the very handy map I was given. I felt much more independent since I longer had to relay on Daniel to show me around. It was only a matter of time before he'd get annoyed of it.

It was supposed to be my dinner break, since it was seven o'clock and my next shift would start in half an hour. I wasn't hungry; only because of all the mixed emotions I felt. When I thought too much, I would lose my appetite. Hence my loss of hunger.

Instead, I spent the remaining time memorizing the map. I pulled all my focus towards it, my eyes skimming over the printed lay out. It had all the rooms, even a little area for the courtyard I was familiar with.

Yet, my focus was soon interrupted by a rough knock on the door. I glanced up, a hint of surprise and shock floating in my stomach.

"Come in," I called, clearing my throat. The door hurriedly turned open and in stepped a man. A guard. I hadn't seen him before, but he had a stern expression playing on his face. He looked Mexican, with his tanned skin. His dark black hair, jelled back. A nice shade of brown eyes.

I pulled on a polite smile.

Being nice was always a good first impression.

"Can I help you?" I asked, letting go of the paper in my hand and pushed up my glasses. He motioned his head over to the figure I was yet to notice that stood beside him. The man beside him had his hood on, dressed in grey sweats, his head down. I frowned in confusion.

"Your first patient. Since I heard you're new here, good luck with this one." The guard snorted, shoving the inmate forward and into the chair across my desk. I bit back a gasp, threatening to escape.

I had noticed the guards and inmates didn't share a very welcoming relationship with one another. The inmates saw them as people who stopped their escape, I guess. And the guards saw them as people who'd make their day hard.

It just confused me to see Daniel act so friendly with Sam. I found myself absentmindedly blushing from remembering him.

He interested me...

"Have fun," The guard sarcastically said as he walked out, closing the door behind him. I swallowed a nervous gulp, glancing back at the inmate with his hood still on. His head was bowed down as his body heaved.

He was angry.

A moment of silence reigned upon us and I simply stared at the angry inmate. I didn't know what to do or say. It could have a bad impact and cause the inmate to grow angrier.

I certainly didn't want that.

"Uh...hi," I foolishly whispered. My response was silence, but I noticed that the inmate tensed from hearing my voice, before he went back to slowly breathing.

Well, okay...

"I...I'm Belle, the health adviser. I'm not going to hurt you." I softly said. The inmate didn't reply, his head still down. I didn't know why I said the last part. I just didn't want the inmate to think I'd treat them the same as the guards.

"You can call me by my first name, if you like. Hearing someone call me miss or ma'am, just feels wrong." I continued on. Still no response.

"W-What's your name?" I hesitantly questioned after a few seconds of silence. Another long pause echoed in the air and just when I was about to give up and lose all hope - he spoke.

"Sam," He lowly rasped, barely audible. My heart twisted from hearing the familiar name. My eyes widened in realization and surprise.

Could it be the same Sam?

My mouth parted to reply, but no words left my words. I must have looked like a fish blowing bubbles inside water. I was just thankful that Sam didn't witness it. Then I would have made a real fool of myself.

"Sam...that's a...nice name." I breathed out, after a long silence. My heart was pulsing at an unhealthy speed, just from talking to this intriguing man. I was just wondering why he had such a large effect me. And more importantly, why was I letting him?

"Who are you and where's Rachel?" He growled out. I jumped back to reality, frowning in confusion at his words. Although, I could tell his words weren't intended to be rough.

"Rachel? I-I'm sorry, I don't know who that is..." I trailed off. There was a large silence for a minute, at least. My eyes were locked on 'Sam', waiting for him to respond in any way. And then, suddenly, his head whipped up and my heart dropped.

It was him. The same Sam, I had seen earlier on. The same one which had me intrigued. My eyes widened in surprise, my mouth parting slightly. He was even more beautiful up close. His sharp jaw was clenched, showing off his heated anger. His brows furrowed, too.

I stared at him like a fool. Feeling captivated by his gorgeous, golden orbs. They were so intense and pulling. I couldn't find myself to look away. A faded red scar, plastered near his nose. Small beauty spots, near his eye; only noticeable if you were to look closely.

He was truly breathtaking.

I slowly pushed my glasses up, closing my parted mouth. I cleared my throat, shifting on my seat, feeling a red blush burn on my cheeks.

"Rachel's the nurse around here. Where is she?" His husky voice questioned, startling me for a second. I felt my lower region oddly tingle.

Oh...my.

"I...I don't know who that is..." I repeated, daringly glancing up at him. His eyes were already on me. Then there was a short moment of silence.

"Who are you?" He asked, his voice husky as ever. I tucked a lose strand of hair behind my ear, clearing my throat.

"I'm Belle. The new nurse." I softly said, with a small pause. I watched his reaction, a glint crossing his eyes. What looked like anger and annoyance crossed his face. He let out a deep sigh, falling back into his chair.

"Of course," He muttered, running a hand across his beanie covered head. I nervously glanced around, not knowing what to say. Slowly, he sat up and squinted his eyes at me. I returned the eye contact, trying my hardest not to stare.

"Why are you here?" He asked after a few seconds of silence. He looked intrigued and curious. I frowned.

"I don't think that's any of your concern." I mumbled. He arched a perfectly shaped, thick brow.

"It's just a simple question. I'm asking why you chose this job, not for your fucking life story." Amusement gleamed in his eyes. I blushed slightly, pursing my lips at him.

"I was offered the job and I took it." I simply replied. I wasn't going to go in on detail - especially with him. His eyes lingered on me and what sounded like a low 'Hmm' came from him.

"I'm Sam Blak." He introduced.

"I know," I blurted out, without thinking. He arched a brow again, amusement dancing in his golden orbs. I blushed again, glancing down at the desk.

"D-Daniel told me. After all, you two seem chummy with one another." I cleared my throat. He didn't reply, instead he stared at me.

"I respect him." Was all he said.

"What about the other guards?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me. A frown curled onto his lips and he leaned back in his chair.

"I only respect people who deserve it." He flatly said. Getting a feeling he had enough of the conversation, I changed the subject.

"So, um...why are you here?" I asked, gesturing around my office. His eyes darkened for a second, and a scowl was brought to his lips.

"Therapy." He finally said after a few seconds. My brows raised in surprise and I slowly nodded.

"Oh, I..." I foolishly stuttered. His eyes bored into me, watching me make a fool of myself.

"Why?" My voice came out as a strangled whisper. His narrowed eyes were locked on me and he opened his mouth to reply, but then a rough knock sounded on the door. Interrupting us. My eyes darted towards the cream colored door.

"C-Come in," I let out in a shaky voice, clearing my throat afterwards. The door turned open and in stepped the familiar Mexican guard.

"Your twenty minutes are up. Back to work, Inmate." He declared, striding towards Sam. I frowned, watching as he gripped onto Sam's arm and forcefully pulled him up.

"Twenty minutes?" I heard myself ask. "Isn't it usually forty or an hour?"

He narrowed his eyes at me, shrugging his bulky shoulders. "It's your first session; they're always shorter than the others."

He followed on with his actions, gripping onto Sam's arm.

"Wait!" I found myself saying. Both men turned to look at me. I swallowed the gulp in my throat, briefly looking at Sam before focusing my attention back to the guard.

"We're not just finished yet. Could you give up another minute or two, please?" I gently asked him. The guards brows furrowed in confusion and he opened his mouth to reply, before clamping it shut. He seemed to be contemplating to himself.

"Two minutes. I'll be waiting outside." He firmly said, letting go of Sam's arm, before walking out and quietly closing the door. My eyes darted back over to Sam, who was already looking at me with confusion. Yet I could sense the anger still lurking in his eyes.

"Why do they treat you like that?" I found myself asking, concern laced with my words. I didn't know why I was so worried about him...but I just was. And it sort of made sense; he was my patient after all.

"Because they think they're the shit. Because others...rebel, they treat us all the same." He simply said. It sort of pained me to hear how nonchalantly he had said it. As if it were normal. My frown deepened and my heart twisted with sympathy.

"I'm sorry to hear that," I whispered. His eyes darkened and his jaw clenched.

"Don't be." Was all he said. A short silence waved across the air and I watched as he closed his eyes, messaging each of his temples.

"So...back to where we were before we were interrupted..." I trailed off. His eyes snapped open, revealing those captivating golden hazel orbs.

"Why?" I softly asked, repeating myself from before. He didn't say anything for a while, instead kept his eyes sternly locked on me. I didn't feel uncomfortable under his stare, only a little self-conscious. Hence the blush burning on my cheeks.

"It doesn't matter." He paused. "You won't be able to 'fix' me, anyway. Nobody has."

And my heart tugged in sadness when I saw the emotions wave across his eyes. It was all a jumble of emotions I had seen before.

In my own eyes.

"I beg to differ." I choked out, clearing my throat afterwards. His intense eyes stayed locked on me.

"I'm not here to fix you. I'm here to understand you." I softly said. His eyes gleamed slightly and he pulled on a humourless smile.

"Good luck with that." He rasped. Another knock sounded on the door.

"Two minutes are up." The guard announced, stepping in and no longer caring. I cleared my throat and nodded at him.

"We're all done." I forced myself to say. The guard sent me a curt nod, before he gripped onto Sam's arm and tugged him out. When the door closed, I felt a tear slide down my cheek.

Why on earth was I crying?

With the confused thought, I reached out, wiping the tear drop from my cheek. I didn't know what had caused me to cry, but I could only blame one person for it. Sam...something about him intrigued me as well as confused me.

I felt as if he were really...misunderstood.

"Get a grip, Belle." I whispered to myself, dabbing my eyes. For the rest of the night I was left to think of the golden eyed man. Him, never once leaving my mind even as I met two new patients.

And one question lurked in my mind.

Who was Rachel?
