《A New Beginning》Chapter 3

Unprepared for any visitors anytime soon, Danny jumped and flinched violently when the door opened with a world-shattering bang, or at least it seemed world-shattering to his sensitive hearing. Turning quickly to the source of the noise, ready to fight any of the opponents that the GIW normally sent in during tests like these, he was surprised to find that there were no obvious aggressors, but rather people wearing strange and (in some cases) obnoxiously bright costumes. He was half tempted to ask if they were on their way to comic-con or something of the like, but he held his tongue, instead taking to scan each of the newcomers from head to toe.
The shortest one, and presumably the youngest who appeared to be about sixteen if the boy had to guess, had black hair - messy and unruly much like his own was in his human form - and he was wearing a red armour-like shirt with a stylized 'R' on the left side of his chest and a black cape with a yellow inner lining. He also wore a domino mask that obscured his eyes which instinctively made Danny wary. He didn't trust those who hid their faces as it implied that they had a reason to conceal their identity, and in Danny's experience that reason was very rarely innocent or benign. Concealing any part of your face hid the micro-expressions that most people couldn't control, and therefore it hid the most reliable way to tell of someone's intentions. Danny didn't like people who hid their intentions, purposefully or not.
The boy standing next to him was wearing a suit so bright it hurt Danny's eyes with a vivid yellow on his torso and a hot-rod red on his legs. He was taller than the first boy by a few inches with a mess of curly carrot-orange hair, and Danny felt a pang in his chest about how much it reminded him of his foster sister. He wore goggles over his eyes, but unlike the other boy, the lenses were clear enough that Danny could at least see the turquoise eyes that were focused intently on him which comforted that uneasy part of the boy that hated the secrecy implied by some of the others. It wasn't perfect, but this teen and the blonde girl dressed in green made him slightly more comfortable than 'R'. In the center of the yellow boy's chest was a red lightning bolt confined in a solid white circle. He looked to be about seventeen or eighteen, but Danny couldn't correctly decipher which one mostly because he hasn't really seen enough older teenagers up close to be able guess at what they may or may not look like. Danny could hear the boy's heart beating fast, a lot faster than a normal human and almost ten times faster than his own. He could also feel the electric currents rolling off the boy in waves, and Danny couldn't help but wonder what would happen to the older teen if Danny used his powers to absorb that electricity buzzing rapidly through his form. 'Guess if this goes south, we'll find out,' the young boy thought to himself, certain and remorseless at the thought that he could very well have to kill these people if they proved to be a threat to him.

Standing behind the two boys there was a dark skinned and muscular teen that was around the same height as the red-head, only an inch or a half taller at most but this could very well be an illusion by where Danny was standing. He had buzzed, platinum blond hair and was wearing a red tank top with black accents, his face was completely uncovered so Danny could see his aqua green eyes that were almost as bright as his own radioactive green ones. The lack of any sort of concealment endeared the teen to Danny more than the three hiding themselves, but the boy was far from trusting any of these people regardless if they seem to be hiding something or not.
After all, the GIW never wore masks.
Danny's eyes were forced away from his face and he caught sight of the sword-like weapons secured to his back, and when he shifted his gaze slightly to the right, he idly observed that the eighteen year old teen had gills on his neck, which meant not everyone standing in front of him was as human as they first appeared (though he already has suspected given the green girl with fire-truck red hair that was floating an inch off the floor slightly farther away with the other blonde female). Danny didn't bother wondering what the teen was, he really had no room to judge others on their unique anatomy. He was half dead, after all.
Danny's gaze finally gravitated to whom he had deemed the biggest threat in the room, due to both level of concealment and difference in stature. This was a grown man, not a teenager, and he wore all black that canceled all skin besides his mouth. He had a cowl that covered his eyes similarly to how 'R' covered his that also had pointed tips that resembled the ears of a bat, which made sense when paired with the black and yellow bat symbol proudly sitting on the man's chest. He was very muscular, and Danny couldn't identify anything about him that said he was...enhanced, no outward physical attributes (like gills or green skin) and nothing inward (like electricity in his veins) that indicated that this threatening man was less/more-than-human. However, Danny knew from experience that normal human beings are not any less of a threat than non-human entities, he actually found them to be more threatening simply based off of the greed and superiority complex that drives their actions more often than not, at least that's what he's observed with his own personal experience when encountering the species. While he conceded that he used to be human, and part of him still technically was, he had been something other for far longer than he was ever human so he doesn't really feel like he can sympathize with the instincts and actions of humanity. The human man in front of him wore a permanent stone mask as his expression, and Danny knew that this man would not hesitate to take down any thing that was deemed a danger. Alpha was the word that seemed most fitting in the boy's mind and the primal part of him that had been awakened from the moment he didn't understand what was going on recognized the man's status as dominant. Not that the more evolved part of his brain cared about the man's perceived dominance.

Not once dropping his defensive stance, the scan of the group in front of him took a total of thirty seconds. The boy narrowed his eyes in suspicion and apprehension, and waited for one of the others to make the first move. He could tell from the slightly shocked expressions on two of the teen's faces, they were expecting a scared, broken little boy.
They weren't entirely incorrect with their assessment, Danny was terrified. His heart was beating a fast symphony in his chest and he was consciously keeping his body from trembling and his breath from hitching. He was also broken, in more ways than one, a fact of life (or half-life) he has long since accepted. But he was not a little boy, not in the ways that mattered. Not mentally, not emotionally. No, he was forced to grow up faster than any one should and so he was not a little boy that they could comfort and soothe. He was a trained weapon, a soldier, a tool to be used and thrown away once proven to be worthless. He's also not stupid, far from it, and deciding to trust these people right off that bat would be a very stupid decision made on his part.
The man in all black - Batman, Danny decided to call him - stepped forward, which the hybrid responded to by taking a step back. The man recognized the action and ceased his movement, instead he began to speak from the doorway in which he still stood.
"My name is Batman," Danny refrained from inelegantly snorting at the fact he had accurately predicted his name. The man continued, "you are in the Young Justice Headquarters." Danny blinked in shock, and confusion when the man didn't elaborate or explain. 'The Young Justice? Am I supposed to know what that is?'
"What do you mean? You've never heard of us?" The youngest of them asked flatly, but Danny could hear an underlining of disbelief despite how hard the teen tried to smother it. The absent-minded eleven year old jumped, both not realizing he spoke out loud and for being addressed directly. Danny, unsure of his voice and still very much distrustful of the odd bunch, only gave a single, sharp shake of his head to answer the boy's question. The boy that Danny decided to refer to as 'R' until he got a proper name and the boy with the hair like his sis--
--'Lightning', Danny decided, shared a confused look with each other while the others stayed stoic as ever.
"Dude, how long were you in there?" Lightning blurted out tactlessly, wincing as soon as the words left his mouth. He received a blow to the side by R and a nasty glare (but not the worst Danny's ever seen) from Batman.
The boy, however, took this in stride despite the hurricane of emotions brewing under his calm, warrior facade. "Seven years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 6 days, 14 hours." He responded. The other's noticed a distinct accent that no one was able to place indicating that English was not his first language. The others stared at him with shock and pity in response to his declaration, even Batman and 'Gill boy.'
'I really hope I get some names soon.'
"Holy shit." R muttered under his breath, too quiet for any human to hear, but Danny heard it loud and clear and his calculating gaze snapped to the boy immediately, who almost recoiled.
Lightning, trying to dissipate the tension that circulated the small room, started to speak. "My name is Kid Flash, but most just call me Kid."
The other's seemed to catch on. "I'm Robin." R stated.
"Aqualad" Gills said.
'Pretend names it is, then.'
"Phantom. People call me Phantom."

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
