《Harrisons - The Last Chapter》Chapter Twenty-Six: The Fight

Maria paused outside the entrance of her house. She knows what is waiting for her inside. She holds tightly to the crutches and glanced down at the stroller. Ezra peacefully sleeps in it. She saw one of Silas's men outside the café she was meeting Sean. He didn't even try to hide. It was probably his way of communicating that your husband knows. Even if she hadn't seen that man there, Maria would have believed that Silas knows. Of course, he would know. Even if it isn't for the security guards, Sean would have told Silas – or maybe she would have told him herself. One way or another, there is no way she could hide it from him, so why bother?

The only reason why she even went to see Sean behind Silas's back is that she knows that he would never let her go knowing whom she is trying to see. She didn't have a choice but to go behind his back. She blew her cheeks out and unlocked the door before she walked inside the house.

The house was quiet as if there is no one around. Maria knows for a fact that Bear must be sleeping in some corner and Silas – she doesn't even know if he is home yet. Typically he comes home in the evening, but today are the different circumstances. She pushed the stroller further into the house and dropped the house keys on the kitchen counter, along with her bag. Her eyes traveled around the empty house. Maybe Silas hasn't returned home yet.

Her assumption was proven wrong when she heard footsteps coming down from the stairs. She turned around to see Silas walking down. He was wearing the white button-up shirt that he wore to the office this morning along with the same gray pants. His tie and coat were missing and the sleeves of the shirt were rolled up to his elbows. Silas didn't even look at her – instead, his eyes were on Ezra, who peacefully sleeps in the stroller.

Silas calmly walked to her and she expected him to say something to her – to tell her how disappointed he is with her or how she shouldn't have gone without him knowing – or anything, but instead, Silas bend down to the stroller, unhooked Ezra from it, took his in his arm and wordlessly took the baby upstairs to his room. He didn't even spare her a glance.

Silas could feel her eyes on him as he took Ezra to his room. If he is being honest, he would tell that he has been preparing to have a decent conversation with her when she returns, but he didn't trust himself at the moment, therefore he decided to not say a word to her. He is not going to ignore her all day – nor will he not talk to her about what she has done, but he doesn't believe that it is the right time to have this conversation with her. He is extremely bothered by her seeing Sean and he doesn't want to fight her about it. So, he is going to stay silent until he calms himself down a bit, so he can have a mature discussion with his wife – just like Marcus suggested.

Maria, on the other hand, didn't take his silence so well. In her mind, history is repeating itself. He was just as wordless when he first had doubts about her and Marcus's relationship. He didn't converse with her, just like he didn't right now. Their lack of conversation caused a huge dent in their lives and here he is doing it again. Maybe he didn't learn anything from the past, Maria thought.

She followed him upstairs and decided to initiate the dialogue. She doesn't care if he yells at her or shows his disapproval. All she wants from him is a conversation – any sort will work for her. She needs to know how exactly he is feeling.

It wasn't hard for Maria to find him. He was in Ezra's nursery. He had put the baby in his cot and was now putting the blanket over him. Maria rested against the door frame and watched Silas kissing the sleeping Ezra's head and mumbling a soft, "I love you," before he stood straight and heaved a sigh. He didn't have to turn around to know that Maria followed him.

He slowly turned around to look at her. Maria glanced towards Ezra, who peacefully slept. She didn't want to have this conversation with him around Ezra. So, she bobbed her head to Silas – asking him to follow her before she walked out. Silas glanced back at his son one last time before he followed Maria out.

Maria turned around and faced Silas as soon as he stepped out of the nursery. She heaved a sigh, "Aren't you going to say anything?" She asked him softly. Her voice carried defeat – she was already so done with this mess. Maybe that's the reason why she took such a step without letting Silas know.

Silas glanced down at his feet. His shoulders sunk as he shrugged, "Who am I to say anything here? You did what you had to do." He said and looked at her. The small sarcastic smile he had on his face didn't sit well with Maria.

She rolled her eyes, "Yes, you are right. I had to do it, Silas. I had to take a chance," She waved her arms out. "You didn't even ask me how it went. You don't even know if it worked," She was annoyed, but she kept her voice low – because of her sleep baby in the next room.

Silas clenched his jaws when a very disturbing picture of Sean dragging Maria away, his putting his hands on her, his hurting her – she closed his eyes tightly – trying to get the absurd scene out of his head. His thoughts made him feel troubled, so he flared his nostrils and looked at her. There stood Maria, with her eyebrows pulled together – unharmed. He could see that not even a hair on her was out of place – she was safe and near to him and away from Sean, but he can't off what could have had happened.

Silas suck in a breath and opened his mouth. He was prepared to tell her how he felt at the exact moment when he was told that Maria has gone to see Sean alone with any security. He wanted to let her know that he almost felt his soul drifting away from his body. The second he heard her name with Sean's his heart stopped and he immediately started to picture the worse. The first thought that came to his mind was that he had her. "He got her. He is going to take her away from me." The moment – even for just a second he believed that he lost Maria again. Just the thought of the feeling to be separated from her in the worse way brought tears to his eyes. His lips wobbled and he closed his mouth. He shook his head and without a word he walked into their bedroom.

Maria followed him in there. She needed to have this conversation – even if it ends with tears, or hugs, or kiss – or dejection. She had to have this conversation with him. She tightened her grip on the crutches and followed him in, to see him taking a towel out of the closet. He was preparing to take a shower, but Maria wouldn't let him – not before he talk to her.

"So, that is what you are going to do? Ignore me? Silas, I am not a child! I did try to talk to you about it, but you never gave me a chance to talk about it past mentioning it to you once!" She was irritated to see that Silas was walking around in the room gathering the towel, removing his watch from his wrist, placing the watch on the table, taking his belongings from his pockets, taking his belt off – everything, but look at her in the eyes and talk to her.

"I know you are not a child, Maria. I never treat you like one!" Silas threw the towel on the bed and turned to look at her. He flared his nostrils and gritted his teeth. It has been a while since he felt this angry around Maria – with Maria. "I didn't say anything. You wanted to go, you went. End of it. Why do you so badly want to talk about it?" He asked ridiculously. "If I say something, you have a problem. If I don't say anything, you have a problem. You are looking for an answer that suits you, and I am sorry Maria, but I can't give it to you, okay? So, just drop it!" Silas replied hotly to her, before grabbing the towel back from the bed and striding towards the washroom.

Maria squinted her eyes. Tears filled in them. She turned around as he walked past her, "I just want to know how you feel about me right now. That's all I am asking from you. You always keep everything to yourself. You don't communicate with me. You can't boss this situation, Silas! All this matter includes me!" She paused and jabbed her finger on her chest, "It all revolves around me then why don't I have a say in this? Why am I a bad person to try to solve the mess created because of me?!" She asked. Her voice was loud. Her eyes filled with tears.

Silas huffed, "I am not trying to boss you around, okay? I was just trying to save you, Maria! Can't I do that? Is it too bad to care for the person I love the most, is it?" Silas scoffed and watched tears drip off her eyes. His own eyes filled with tears. "You have no idea what that man could have done! He could have caused some real damage, Maria – why don't you understand?!" Silas emphasized – his voice is loud. A vein popped on his forehead. His eyes get red and his voice broke at the end of his sentence.

Maria snuffled, "Silas, I am standing right in front of you!" She tried to wave her hand around her. "He didn't cause any damage. My decision to go and talk to him didn't cause any damage!" She yelled out. Their loud voice might not have woken up Ezra, but it sure woke ear up from his sleep.

Silas strode closer to her. "It caused damage up here!" Silas shoved his face into hers and jabbed his index finger on his temple – poking it a couple of times. His answer silenced Maria. Tears might be streaming on her face, but words refuse to escape her mouth. Silas was panting, as he stared into her eyes. Tears flowed off his eyes as well. The two of them stood silent for a couple of minutes. The only thing they could hear was their breathing and Bear's barking from outside the room.

Silas tightly closed his eyes. He snuffled and rested his forehead against Maria. Neither of them attempted to touch one another. "I –" Silas started to speak, but his voice broke. He gulped and tried again, "I can't even – I can't even explain the thoughts that went through my mind all the time you were with him, Maria. I – you can't say your decision didn't cause any damage, it did. It would be unfair to me to say it didn't." Silas wept. "Up until I heard you open the door, I was imagining every worse thing possible. I wondered if I saw you for the last time this morning before I left for work," He whispered. Maria could feel Silas shiver for a second.

"Your smiling face from this morning came up in my mind. I realized how you were nervous. How your smile couldn't reach your eyes. I wondered if that would be the last memory of you with me. I regretted every moment that I could have spent with you but I didn't because I ended up spending those hours on work – because I thought I will not be given another chance to make those memories with you." He told her softly. He paused and opened his eyes. He gulped and slowly pulled away from her, "I thought that I failed you," He added.

Maria's anger dissolved with each other he spoke to her. She let out of her one crutch and put it on Silas's cheek, which he quickly kissed and held on to. "Silas," she whispered, "Baby, he could have never hurt me. Your man was there, I know. He could have saved me. Sean didn't follow me, but I know one of your security guys did. He made sure I come home safe. You would have never let anyone hurt me, I know that." Her voice was soft – the harshness completely vanished.

Silas shook his head, "I don't trust anyone completely when it comes to you and Ezra," He explained. "I can't help but feel relentless until I see you well. I don't know why but I just couldn't stop thinking about losing you. I know it is screwed up, but I just couldn't help it." He told her.

Maria's lower lip wobbled, "Silas, I am so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. Baby, hey –" She whispered and made him look in her eyes, "Hey, I am safe and well because of you, babe. I know I should have had this fight with you before I met him." Both tearfully chuckled, "I promise I will never take such a big step without telling you first, Silas."

Silas inhaled deeply and nodded his head, "And I promise to never boss you around. I am sorry, too. I am just glad you are okay," He spoke and placed a soft kiss on Maria's forehead.

Maria smiled and let out of her other crutch as well. She can stand on her own for a couple of seconds but after that, her legs just give in, but Silas didn't let that happen – he never does. He put his arms around her and embraced her in a tight hug.

They didn't kiss. They didn't have sex next. Instead, they both hugged each other. They didn't count the seconds or minutes – but it was a long and overdue hug. It was the most intimate expression for either of them at that moment – the feeling of being in each other's arms is what brought peace to them.
