《Harrisons - The Last Chapter》Chapter Twenty-Two: A Deadly Threat

"How did it go?" Leo asked his father on the phone while he stood outside the hospital, still dressed in his scrub. He was still on duty, but since he was on a break – he decided to ring his father to ask about Owen's first chemotherapy session.
Franklin sighed, "It went well. He is resting now." He paused. Leo heard shuffling and muffled sounds from the other side before Frank spoke again, "He is being very stubborn about it. I have been asking him to call someone, at least Marcus, and tell him, but he denied and said he will do it in his own time." He added lowly.
Time – that's a very risky factor for Owen at this time. His reports that Leo had gone through were not very satisfactory. These are not the times to keep such a big secret from his family. As a doctor, he advised Owen to tell his family. He needs them right now – more than they need him.
Leo knows about Owen's cancer. He wasn't supposed to know, but he accidentally read the reports that were in Franklin's room when he was in New York. Leo went to see his father, but he wasn't around, so he decided to wait for him in his room and that's when a medical report caught his eye. Leo's blood drained, thinking it belonged to his father and he was hiding it from Leo, but then he saw it belonged to Owen.
There were a bunch of tests he had done and being a doctor Leo immediately knew what were those tests for. The tests included MRI, CT Scan, PET scan, and among others had a week-old biopsy report. He had the results right in front of him, but he didn't dare to open it and read it. So, he waited for his father and when he came back – Leo asked his father.
Franklin came clean to his son and told him about Owen's colon cancer. He asked his son to read his reports that Frank and Owen are supposed to take to an oncologist, but Leo refused to do it before Owen's permission. That's when Franklin took Leo to Owen and Leo read his reports, they were not optimistic. The PET Scan was worrisome. Leo thought that Owen would tell his kids immediately, but he didn't and now Leo feels burdened to know the truth while Elizabeth is still unaware of her father's health.
Leo has been keeping too many secrets from her. She will not forgive him when she will know that Leo already knows about the threats her brother is facing and also about her father's bad health. Even though Leo doesn't want to keep these secrets away from her – he is compelled to keep his mouth shut. These are not his secrets to reveal.
"Dad, when Elizabeth will know that I already knew about Owen's health issues – she will not forgive me for keeping it from her." Leo was stressing out. "I am already keeping enough secrets from her." He mumbled lowly while he rubbed his temples.
"What do you mean by that?" Franklin asked.
Leo heaved a sigh, "I know about Silas and Sean. I know Sean tried to break into Silas's house." He told his father. It has been a week since Leo last talked to Silas about it. His sister and Silas were in Hawaii at the moment and Leo didn't want to bother them. "And Silas didn't want Elizabeth to know, so I am keeping it away from her as well. You have no idea how upset she will get when she will learn that I knew about her family affairs before her." He told his father, "To be honest, Dad, it isn't fair to her either. She deserves to know." Leo pressed.

Franklin was silent for a few seconds. He blew his cheeks out and nodded his head, "I agree," He replied. He will try to talk to Owen again in a day or two – right now Owen needs some rest.
Charlie was watching Silas's house's CCTV recording from yesterday on Marcus's laptop along with him. Although there was no disturbance report – Marcus still keep an eye on the security. He doesn't trust anyone else. Maria and Silas are coming back tomorrow and Marcus wants to make sure that everything is fine around Silas's house. Marcus also know that his house wasn't completely safe either – therefore, he had increased the security about his house as well. "Everything seems fine," Charlie mumbled.
Marcus hummed while his eyes were on the screen, "It looks fine, but I have no idea about the extend of Sean's obsession with Maria – I am scared that he is only waiting for them to return," Marcus thoughtfully spoke.
Charlie rubbed Marcus's arm, "Don't worry, I don't think he can do anything now that we have the police involved." She spoke as she held his hand in hers.
Marcus looked at his wife and softly smiled at her before he wrapped his arm around her. He kissed her head and pulled her closer to him. Charlie placed her head on Marcus's shoulder and for a couple of minutes, no one spoke. Marcus closed the video and resumed some of his work on his laptop, while Charlie just sat by him. She watched him work.
She didn't understand anything he does, but she likes to be around him when he is busy. She loves it when Marcus doesn't forget to hold her hand when he is working, or when he is completely grossed up by something, he still traces his fingertips silkenly on her skin – giving her goosebumps. Charlie glanced at Marcus, who had his eyebrows knitted together and his sole focus was whatever he was reading on his laptop, while his finger caresses her thigh. She smiled and closed her eyes – it felt nice, she could fall asleep. It has happened before when Marcus would work from home while Charlie sleep with her head on his lap or his shoulder.
She was very sleepy when the moment was broken by the doorbell ring. She let out a low groan. Marcus glanced at her and smiled, "I will go and see," He told her, to which she held his wrist and shook her head, "No, I will go. I have to check up on kids anyways," She replied – a little annoyed by whoever was at the door. They ruined a perfectly peaceful moment for her.
Marcus pulled her hair behind her ear, "Are you sure?" He asked and caressed her cheek – her eyes flattered at the gesture. She smiled and nodded, "Yes," She replied and kissed him on his cheek. She quickly stepped out of their room and went downstairs when the bell rang again.
She went to the door and opened the door, without even looking through the peephole first like Marcus had said to her. To say that she was taken back by the presence of the person she never thought she would see on her doorstep, would be an understatement. She gaped as she rudely stared at the person.
Elna looked at Charlie with her eyes widened. She looked so different. Her hair was shorter now. She looked like she has gained a little weight. She even looked mature to her. The last time Elna saw her was when she was pregnant. Elna knows that she and Marcus welcomed a daughter and they named her Ella. She gulped down the trepidation and was forced to curl her lips in a half-smile, "Hi, Charlie." She whispered.

Charlie's mouth curled into a scowl. Her forehead creased and her nostrils flared. Elna anticipated this reaction from Charlie. This is exactly why she was nervous to show up at their house. "What are you doing here?" Charlie asked. Elna noticed how Charlie clenched the door and closed it as much as she could. She was blocking the way inside the house by her small figure. She was acting defensively. Knowing what her brother has been up to – Charlie had every right to act so watchfully towards her.
Charlie dug her feet on the floor. She was prepared to defend her family if Elna tried to forcefully entire in the house. She knows that the probability of Elna being so stupid is near nothing, but she was still prepared. She was thinking like Marcus. Elna smashed her lips together, "I am not here to hurt anyone, Charlie. I promise. I am here to help." Elna spoke softly.
Charlie narrowed her eyes, "We don't need your help," Charlie gritted through her teeth. She not only remembers Elna's betrayal towards Maria but also her attraction towards her husband. She doesn't want Elna near Marcus – never! "You need to leave and never return," She snapped at Elna, who knew this would happen.
Elna bit down her lower lip and heaved a sigh, "I know what is Sean up to. Believe me, I don't want him to go through his plans. I really want to help Silas and Maria and – my brother. He needs help." Elna spoke with her eyes glossed and her voice shaky.
Silas glanced at Maria, who was sleeping with Ezra on top of her. He smiled and placed a kiss on her head lightly – making sure she doesn't wake up before he placed a soft kiss on his son's cheek. Silas's eyes averted back to his laptop screen where he types an email to Dr. Quinn. Even though he promised Maria to contact the doctor only after their trip, he couldn't help it. He wrote her the day they reached here and has been in contact with her ever since. She had once again guided her to take Maria to Chicago. Silas has decided to discuss this with Maria once they get back home tomorrow.
"Silas," Maria sleepily mumbled. He looked towards her to see her talking in her sleep. Silas softly smiled and closed his laptop before he lay beside her. He ran his fingers through her hair as he hummed in response. "See, I am walking." She mumbled again before she once again fell asleep – leaving Silas feeling heavy in the chest.
She must be having a dream. Silas smashed his lips together.
He leaves a silken kiss on her temple, "You will, sweetheart. I will do everything to make sure you do," He whispered and lay his head back on the pillow and watched his wife and Ezra sleep. He couldn't sleep – there is too much on his mind. He glanced back at his wife. He tossed to face her and hooked his hand under his chin while he watched Maria slowly breathe in and breathe out, "I will not let anything happen to you, Maria. I promise. I love you so much." He whispered to her.
Back in New York, Marcus decided to walk downstairs when it took Charlie a little longer than he expected, to see who it was. "Who is it?" Marcus asked her when he saw her standing at the door. Charlie slowly turned her head to see Marcus standing by the stairs with his eyebrows pulled together.
Just by looking at her face, he could tell that she was unhappy about whoever was at the door. Marcus quickly walked to her, only for Charlie to wide open the door – exposing Elna to Marcus's sight. He halted and gaped. Marcus gulped and glanced at Charlie, who looked extremely annoyed. Marcus clearly remembers telling Elna to never try to contact him again and now here she was – at his door.
"Wh-what's happening?" Marcus numbly mumbled. Everything between Charlie and Marcus has been going too well – Marcus was praying that Elna doesn't ruin it for him.
Charlie looked at Marcus before she and Marcus both averted their eyes on Elna, who was yet to walk into their house. Elna looked at Marcus and quickly averted it to Charlie before she looked back at him. "Sean, he – Sean has completely lost his mind." Elna clenched her bag in her hand. Her heart was racing in her chest while the guilty was eating her to bits. She was going to rat out her brother – her only brother whom she loves too much and that's why she is here – to stop him from doing something crazy – to save him from himself.
"What do you mean?" Marcus squinted his eye and slowly stepped closer to his wife while his eyes were on her.
"Umm, last night – he drunkenly confessed to – well, kidnap Maria if he has to." He confessed.
Charlie gasped and Marcus flared his nostrils while gritting his teeth together. He curled his hands into fists, "He what?" He pressed angrily.
Elna nervously glanced at Charlie before she looked back at Marcus, "Marcus, I know him. He has gone crazy. He hired someone to break into Silas's house the other day. I didn't believe him when he said he would send Silas a message, but he did. And now, he is talking about kidnapping her and keeping her locked in his room. If he says he will – it means he will. You – I don't know how, but you need to stop him. He will ruin Maria and his own life. Please, you need to do something," Elna pleaded.
There was complete silence for a couple of seconds. Charlie was too stunned to speak, while Marcus was boiling. He will not let Sean or anyone else mess with his family. Marcus gritted his teeth, "I will kill him if he put his hands on Maria or anyone from my family," Marcus exasperated.

This book emerged from four years of collaborative storytelling centering on the main character, Erida VanIsle, written by author Myra VanIsle. In this book, VanIsle goes beyond the events that led to Erida's sacrifice and explores forty-five years of the cost she paid to protect the sister she loved more than life itself. Shadow Falls explores the family tragedy which led to the separation of two sisters on completely different paths polar opposite of each other.
