《The Tracking ✔》Chapter 35-Not Just A Fight, It's A War

After a night of raw passion, Theo and I held each other the rest of the night. My heat is gone and instead of feeling guilty or bad about the act we just participated in, I feel relieved. I feel love, even though neither of have said it to each other yet.
"You okay?" He asks, pushing my naked body closer to him. I lay my head on his chest and lightly kiss his neck.
"I'm perfect." I say honestly. Theo smiles and kisses my forehead.
"I still can't wrap my head around the fact you want to be immortal." I bring up, the thought of him becoming that is scary and heart-warming at the same time.
"I want to be with you forever. It's that simple." He says, pulling me even closer and I run my fingers through his dark brown hair. He's perfect. I never imagined that I would grow to admire having a mate, but I do. It's unconditional love.
"You are perfect Theo." I speak my thoughts.
Theo leans up and props his head up with his elbow. "And you still ran away from me."
I advert my eyes, guilt creeping in. "I did what I thought was best for you." I say softly.
Theo's hands reach up and turn my face to his, making our eyes meet. "And now I am doing what I think is best for you. You are everything Jacqueline Claire. I need you, now and forever."
JC and I get dressed after another round in the bed, and head down the stairs.
I haven't told JC about the rogue that we captured a few weeks ago. I've questioned him a few times and threatened his life, but he doesn't budge. Today, I plan to kill him. It's better than keeping him down in the basement, but I just got one question left before I make an end to his miserable existence.
"I'm going to fix lunch for everyone, any special orders?" She asks once we arrive in the kitchen. Some of the pack women are already making lunch, but their eyes are more on JC and I than the food before them.
"I'll love whatever you make." I say, and lean down kissing her cheek.
"Where are you going?" She asks. She gets nervous when she doesn't know where I'm at or where I'm going on account of the fights that have been happening.
"Just got to take care of some duties as Alpha. It may take a while. It's in the pack house." I reassure her, rubbing her bare arms.
Natalie and Melanie are staring JC and I down hard, barely speaking above a whisper as they wipe the kitchen counters. JC soon follows my gaze and it lands on the girls. "I guess I should go and try to make friends."
Melanie and Natalie are twin sisters that have been swooning over me for the last five years. They've never acted on their attraction to me, but it's no secret that they've wanted to. I'm not sure how the twins will act with JC, but JC is their Luna now. The mating process completed that, but I'm not sure if JC is aware of that fact.

JC leans up and gives me a soft peck on my lips, "I'll see you later handsome." Then she walks to greet the twins and introduce herself.
I watch them for a moment, but soon walk toward the direction of the basement.
"Alpha." A warrior named Nick greets and guards the entry way door.
I greet him back, he opens to door for me to enter. I descend the stairs and different smelts invade my senses. Death, body odor, rogue, and then a couple pack members. We really should get this place cleaned up.
I can't believe JC had to stay in a place like this. Alpha James's did smell a lot better, I have to admit.
When I reach the bottom of the stairs I can hear Chase's voice questioning and shouting at the rogue. "What do you mean five hundred of you is coming? Answer me!"
I eventually come into view to find Chase in the cell block with the rogue bloody and pinned up against the wall.
"What's going on?" I question, and Chase drops the rogue hard on the floor. "My apologizes Alpha, but this rogue says there is over five-hundred of them coming. These last few attacks have been to make us weaker. Those were just fights, this is a war."
Of course, it all makes sense why only two-hundred would come at a time. Our pack has a total of five-hundred and seventy-two members. Two-hundred and twenty of those are women and children. That leaves us at three-hundred and fifty-two warriors.
Against five-hundred rogues, I'd say that's a little too much. Maybe it could be accomplished, but the causalities would be too great. JC isn't strong enough yet to handle of group that size.
"When is this supposed to happen? "I ask walking up to the rogue myself and bending down to him on the ground. He looks up, blood pouring from his mouth, a few teeth lay on the ground.
"They're not coming alone." He laughs, avoiding out question and lays his head against the wall. "They will get the hybrid. There's no where she can hide from us."
I pick the rogue up by his throat, "When are they coming?" I demand an immediate answer.
The rogue just looks as me as I squeeze his throat tighter and tighter. Then he spits in my face, blood drips down my cheek, but I keep my hold on him. "Disgusting." I say, pushing his face to the ground.
"What should we do?" Chase asks, and I clench my jaw. We can't take on this on alone, we need help. I need to do what I said I would do. I'm still unsure of the word for it, but I'm sure Kelsia will. I need to contact her, and assemble some more man power and maybe even some witches.
If this rogue is being truthful, the five-hundred rouges aren't the only thing coming for us. Something else is too.
"I'll call Kelsia. Chase you call our Crescent Night, Knight Moon, and Blue Sky pack. We need their help." I order and get out my phone to call Kelsia.
"Hello?" She answers right away.
"Kelsia, we need your help. We will be attacked soon, I need to start the transformation." I say urgently. Kelsia is silent on the other end.

"You want to start the transformation?" She asks, as if I am unbelievable.
"JC and I have spoke about it. We are going up against five-hundred rouges, and possibly another supernatural being. I don't have time to waste. I have to protect her and I can't do that when we are constant attacked. I need to become what those rouges are trying to."
"You want to be a Spellbound Lycan?" She asks.
"If that's what it's called. Yes." I say, grateful I've learned the name for it finally. I'm surprised that Kelsia is acting like it's surprising for me to want to do this.
"Where are you?" She asks, I can hear her shuffling around in the background.
"I'll text you the address." I hang up the call, text the address, and turn back toward the rouge.
My father's sudden death has put a huge burden on me that no one even really knows about. My first few days as Alpha has been hell and I'm not even sure I everything I am doing is right.
My father taught me a lot in the time he lived about the duties and responsibilities and the Alpha. In this moment, the only word of advice I could remember was "Trust your instinicts".
I hope that I've been making the best choices. I don't have anyone protesting.
"You all will regret this." I look down at the rogue. He looks back up at me with slight smile and punch him hard in the face. His bones crack under the pressure of the hit and he groans in pain.
I wipe my bloody hand off on my pants, and walk up the stairs. Chase follows me, keeping up with me.
"We have to call a pack meeting." Chase mentions and I let out a agitated sigh.
"Already happening. We are going to it now, I mind-linked everyone." I say, getting more and more irritated. We arrive at the top of the stairs. "Don't say anything to JC." I say sternly.
Chase would have usually argued with me if he disagreed, but now that I'm his Alpha he doesn't test me. I wouldn't want to test me right now.
"Yes Sir." He says respectfully, turning toward the direction of the meeting room. I follow him and catch sight of JC trying to talk to Melanie and Natalie, but they are acting like she's not even there. Then they would laugh about something to themselves.
I can see the pain in JC's eyes as she places the sandwiches she has made down on the table and leaves the room. I go from following Chase to following my mate immediately.
I'll be there in ten. I mind-link Chase.
JC senses me coming from behind and I see her wipe her tears. She turns around and smiles at me. "Hey! Lunch is ready." She acted like nothing happened.
"I'm sure it's delicious." I say pulling her into my arms. She wraps her arms around my waist and avoids eye contact with me.
"You know you're their Luna right?" I ask, raising my eyebrow at her. We've never really discussed how she would be as a Luna. Some members have called JC Luna, but she just brushes it off and tells them to call her by her actual name.
JC looks up to me and shakes her head. "I'm not fit to be a Luna."
I step back, looking at her up and down. "You look like Luna material to me."
JC barely lets out a laugh, and that's how I know she's very conflicted about it. I wish that she wouldn't think so negatively about herself. It's not healthy, but I also understand it's years and years of build up that can't just go away.
"Listen to me." I say putting my hands on both sides of her face, brushing her hair away. "You don't let them treat you with that disrespect. If you continue to let them, I'll have to step in. You don't want that. "
JC looks conflicted, but nods. "They're just jealous Theo."
"How is that?" I ask, but then quickly realize why the twins are acting like it. JC knows and can sense the twins jealousy and lust for me.
"You know." She says and I nod. I do know.
"I've got a meeting." I grab JC's hand. "I'll be out as soon as I can. Until then, I don't want them disrespecting you. Jealousy or not."
I can't stand for anyone to be mean to my girl, JC doesn't deserve it. She's too hard on herself as it is, she needs to positive friends and family.
"I got it. Thank you." She says soulfully. I lean down pecking her plump red lips. Then i remind myself I needed to leave to talk with some neighboring packs and my own pack. I'll just keep it a secret from JC for today until I can get protection for all of us. I don't want her worrying.
I enter the large room where all of the male warriors are sitting around a U-Shaped table and a few IPADs are being used to communicate with our closest neighboring packs. All three Alpha's agreed to video chatting with us, behind them are their mates- the Luna's of their pack.
"Alpha Thomas, Alpha Jordan, and Alpha Bellamy, thank you for coming to this meeting." I say to the into each screen of the IPAD. It would be nice to have them here in person, however who knows when this war will start.
"We are here today, because the world is at stake. My mate, JC is a witch and a werewolf. Her blood can change werewolves into immortal and powerful supernatural beings. The rogues want her, so they can take over the supernatural ranks." I pause, looking at the Alpha's expressions on the screens.
But I don't give them room to speak, "We've lost fifteen people, including my father in these attacks to get to her. Those groups were more than maybe two-hundred. This time, we have threats of five-hundred and maybe more coming. We need your help to protect our land, and my mate. If they get to her, they will be unstoppable."
"If this is even true, why haven't you told the council. They could protect her." Alpha Jordan responds. I know the answer to that, I've known it for a long time. Saying it out loud makes it sound more terrifying than the rogues themselves.
"If the council knows, they will kill her."

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
