《The Dendrochronology of Lincoln & Daisy // a Staticquake fanfic》Lincoln Campbell: Age 26

It had been a couple years since Lincoln was brought to Afterlife. The first few months were spent getting himself sobered up and ready for Terrigenesis. Gordon helped him get settled but after a few days, Jacob came and took over as Lincoln's mentor. Jacob was older, a middle-aged dad from London. He would come for a couple weeks at a time before heading back to his family. Jacob was full of stories about his wife, his kids, and his life back home. To Lincoln he lived the perfect double life and he was everything Lincoln wanted to be. Successful, normal, and yet still something special. Lincoln would spend hours with Jacob just talking and learning about the origins of the Inhumans. Jacob had been an Inhuman for almost 10 years and he was full of helpful information and history. Lincoln learned all about Terrigenesis but nothing could have prepared him for his own transition through the mist.
Being stuck in that stone was one of the most painful experiences of Lincoln's life. His whole body felt like it was on fire while simultaneously weighing 1000 pounds. He couldn't move, he couldn't breathe. He felt trapped in a world of darkness. He honestly thought he was going to die. Then the light came cracking through the dark and the stone fell away. He remembered that first breath after breaking out of Terrigenesis. Lincoln felt like he was finally breathing, as if the past twenty something years had been breathing toxic air. He had never felt more alive. Electricity was coursing through his veins and pretty soon it started jumping out of his body. Gordon had him locked up in a safe shed for the first few weeks after his transformation just to be safe. It wasn't long until Lincoln learned that he gained the ability to manipulate electricity. In the early stages of learning to control his powers he almost burned down all of Afterlife.
Lincoln was angry and struggling to come to terms with who he was. He hadn't seen his family in months, he had these new powers he couldn't control, and he felt he wasn't human anymore. That anger transferred over to his powers. Whenever Lincoln thought about how angry he was, lightning would just appear out of him. His vision would turn blinding white and he could feel the heat and static shake within him. Lincoln was starting to lose himself before Jacob finally got through to him. It was one day a few months after Lincoln's transformation. Jacob had just got in from London.
"My daughter just had her first ballet recital." Jacob swiped through the pictures and videos of the girl on his phone. The last was a selfie of the two of them, wide grins on both of their faces. "You know, I would not have been able to have the life I have if I did not learn to let go. This life, these abilities can be hard to carry when you are already lifting too much. You need to decide if these powers will weigh you down or allow you to finally be free of the weight."

It was then that Lincoln knew he had to put the past behind him. He finally understood that the reason he had felt so out of place all his life was because he was an Inhuman. He was created to be more than human. He had a purpose much larger than being angry at the world. This world brought him his powers, Afterlife, and the chance to be more. Lincoln took that chance and held on to it as tight as he could.
Once Lincoln had become more settled with himself and his powers, he started to thrive in Afterlife. He continued to work on his powers and learn more about the Inhumans. Lincoln would spend hours in Jiaying's study, reading through her books and asking her questions about the origins of their people. Sometimes Gordon would come by just stir the pot and start debates among the three fo them. It was everything Lincoln had dreamed of: he had found a family here in Afterlife, an education, the chance to gain knowledge.
He started training to become a transitioner. He felt it was one of the closest things to a doctor he could become in Afterlife. He could help others. That was all he wanted to do. That was the one thing that stayed the same after his transition- his heart for helping others. The training was long. Most of his days were spent with other transitioners, learning how to talk to new Inhumans, prepare them for the Terrigenesis that awaited them.
"Remember," one transition had told him, "the simplest way to tell them about Terrigenesis is to tell them about your own."
Lincoln was already a compassionate person and his caring heart pushed him further into the culture of Afterlife. He was always the first person they called to calm someone new to Afterlife or someone who had just transitioned. More and more people began to know him. Even Jiaying was starting to take a special interest in him, asking him to go on trips with Gordon to check up on those with the Inhuman gene. While he felt more at peace with himself, a part of him still felt unsettled. Like he had only found half of his purpose.
Lincoln was spending time at his favorite spot in Afterlife, a part of the cliffs looking out at the mountains that kept them hidden from the outside world. He would sit there for hours just reading or thinking. It made him think of all the times spent under the oak tree back in Ohio. He used to spend hours doing that same thing. Remembering the tree made him remember Skye, the brown-eyed girl who had stumbled into his life back in high school. They spent almost every day together at that tree, just talking and studying. She was the brightest thing he had ever seen. He always felt like he fit with her, like he wasn't on the outside anymore. Like he was home. Coming to Afterlife and becoming an Inhuman was the closest he had come to that feeling since he last saw Skye.

Lincoln had just started a new chapter in his book when a group of voices interrupted his thoughts. It was a group of younger Inhumans, ones he had been assigned to help transition.
"Lincoln! Hey!" One of the voices called out to him.
Lincoln closed his book with an amused sigh, packing up his things as he turned to answer the voice. "Hey, guys what's up?" He shot the three of them a small smile as they made their way closer to him.
"We were wondering if you had any extra time to train with us..." Tyler, one of the boys in the group, asked nervously as he ran a hand through his hair.
Lincoln gave them a small smirk. "You know, guys. It's technically my day off."
"Just for a little bit!" Holly, a short redhead whose hair matched her fiery personality, interjected.
Lincoln looked to Matthew, the only one in the group who seemed less than thrilled to be here. He hadn't been chosen to go through the mist yet. Lincoln knew that Jiaying was keeping a close eye on the boy, wanting to make sure he was a good candidate. Lincoln feared that Matthew had too much anger in him, too much hate. Lincoln could understand that. He had been the same way when he came to Afterlife. It only took one look at Matthew for Lincoln to make up his mind.
"Alright, alright. Let's do some training." Tyler and Holly let out whispered cheers and Lincoln could see a small smile form on Matthew's face. "But first," he said sitting back down in the grass, "let me tell you a story."
Holly sat down excitedly, but Tyler just groaned. "Cmon man! We came to train, not have story time."
Lincoln only shook his head. "You can't be the best Inhuman you can be without knowing the history of the Inhumans." Lincoln saw Matthew out of the corner of his eye give a small nod and take a seat next to Holly. Tyler sighed, but took a seat next to Matthew.
"Do you know why we are all given different powers after going through the mist?" Lincoln asked them.
The young people shook their heads, looks of confusion crossing over their faces. Lincoln watched Matthew closely as he leaned forward with interest.
Lincoln took in a breath before continuing. "We are given our powers based on the evolutionary needs of the time. Our ancestors were given powers that this world needed when they came here. As the world changes, we are gifted new powers."
"Take Gordon for instance," Lincoln gestured vaguely towards the little village. "He has the ability to teleport because the world knew that we needed to stay safe and stay hidden from he outside world. At least for a little while. Gordon's gift allows us to come and go freely and safely. Make sense?"
His students nodded as they began to chat quietly to each other, wondering about different ideas and questioning what powers they would receive. Even Matthew had joined their conversation with a smile on his face. Clearly whatever Lincoln had said had interested him. Lincoln was about to start answering their questions when Jiaying herself came running up to their spot on the cliffs.
"Lincoln! Lincoln! Come quick I need you," Jiaying was breathing hard as she waved ferociously for Lincoln to follow her. He quickly gathered his things, said a rushed apology and goodbye to his students, and ran with Jiaying.
"What's happening?" Lincoln asked their paced slowed once they had reached the village.
"Gordon is bringing in a new Inhuman. She's already transitioned. She went through the mist." Jiaying looked shocked as she explained this to Lincoln.
"What do you mean?" Lincoln was confused. Had Jiaying not given her permission?
"This girl. She went through the mist the ancient way. With a Diviner and a temple. I didn't even know there were any left..." Jiaying looked panicked as the two of them stopped outside the door to one of the empty rooms used for new Inhumans.
"Are we going in?" Lincoln asked, feeling rushed and unprepared. He usually had more time to prepare.
"You are. The girl, she's unconscious right now, but you should be there when she wakes up. Her powers are... destructive. But they could be used for something beautiful. I'm sorry this is so rushed," Jiaying places a hand on Lincoln's shoulder and smiles, "but you are one of the best transitioners we have. I couldn't think of anyone else to help on such short notice."
Lincoln smiled too and felt himself straighten up a bit at her words. He nodded to her once before turning the door handle to let himself inside. He left his hand on the doorknob as he called after Jiaying, who had already started back down the hall.
"What's her name?"
Jiaying turned back to him with a gentle smile. "Skye."

The Dog with a Chair
As of now, this story is dropped. It was an excellent learning experience, but the quality suffered too much from me trying new things for me to continue in good concience. Thanks to anyone that read it. I'm leaving this story up as a record of my first ever attempt at publishing something I've wrote. To any new writers out there, remember that even if the stuff you write is trash, you can still learn a lot from writing it. - November 17th 2020 Guy gets involved in advocacy for civil engineering projects, then gets pulled into an interdimensional war. Third person with a focus on one main character (Stanley) with the occasional point of view from another character important to story progression. Writing style tends to shift early on as I figure out how to write (this is my first book). Still learning, hoping to improve. Current style choice is to have a focus on character dialogue/actions with interspersed internal monologue in italics. No current end is set for the story, with the primary goal of this project being to learn to express myself in a written format. Storyline is kept as consistent as practical while covering things I find interesting. Governmental systems are mentioned, but not explained in extreme detail. Sci fi elements are used to reinforce and guide plot progression as I'm able. Personal goals belonging to each character are in the process of being developed, with the hope that they will support or oppose each other in interesting ways later on. Hope you enjoy :)
