《Lost & Insecure》Thirty-One - Call It Fate

Katie Torres was in the passenger seat, smiling at her girlfriend. Katie grabbed the girl's tan hand and kissed the back of it. They were on their way to a Jensen Parker concert for their one-year anniversary. Katie couldn't help but smile at the girl sitting beside her.
"What are you geeking about, babe?"
Katie shook her head at her girlfriend's question. "I'm just happy is all. Am I not allowed to be happy?" She teased.
"As long as I'm the one making you happy, then of course you are." The girl teased back.
"Taylor, I promise you that you are the only thing in my life making me happy right now." Katie reassured Taylor of her feelings, squeezing her hand tighter. "I mean who else will buy me backstage passes to Jensen Parker?"
"Oh I see. You only love me for the gifts." Taylor teased Katie.
Katie paused, making a thinking face jokingly. "Well," she tapped her chin, "yeah you're right. I just like you because you're the only one who will spoil me."
Katie didn't realize what venue the concert was at until they pulled up to the parking garage beside it. She was surprised that Jensen would preform in a standing room only venue, because she was a bigger act. Taylor told Katie that tickets sold out within minutes, but luckily Taylor knew someone who helped them out.
Katie and Taylor were allowed to go backstage before anyone else was even allowed in the venue. They introduced themselves to Jensen Parker's opening acts and Taylor immediately started cracking jokes with the band. Katie suddenly had other things on her mind.
Katie excused herself, telling Taylor she was going to the bathroom. "Excuse me," Katie grabbed one of the people dressed in black with a headset running around. He was young, and very frantic. "This is a long shot, but do you happen to know if there's a stagehand here named Dana Thomas?"
"Sorry," the boy shook his head, "I've been here for half a year, and I don't know anyone by that name."
"Okay." Katie was clearly upset, but not surprised. "Thank you anyway."
"Dana Thomas isn't a stagehand." A voice behind Katie spoke. "She's a stage manager now." Katie turned around to see who was now walking towards her. Katie's jaw dropped at the sight of the girl.
"Y-y-you're-" Katie stuttered.
"Hi," the girl smiled, "I'm Jensen Parker." Jensen stuck a hand out for Katie to shake.
Katie suddenly couldn't breathe and her heart started to feel like it was pounding so hard it would jump out of her chest. Jensen Miller was absolutely gorgeous. She was only a couple inches taller than Katie, around 5'6", had her long dark hair down and styled into loose curls, and had a smile that lit up the entire room. She wasn't dressed in anything fancy, which didn't make her any less intimidating or impressive to Katie. Jensen was wearing a black low sleeve tank top and dark skinny jeans.
Katie lifted her right hand to shake Jensen's. "I'm Katie Torres. I love you. I'm sorry that's weird. I didn't mean that. I mean I do, but not like I'm in love with you. I mean I don't even know you." Katie's voice was shaky and she felt like even with barely speaking she had said all the wrong words. "You know Dana? Dana Thomas? Dana Lynn Thomas? Like personally?"

"Well," Jensen shrugged, smiling, "let's just say if you're the Katie Torres that I'm thinking of then you and I have a lot in common." Katie's head shifted. She didn't understand. "Are you the infamous ex-girlfriend Dana told me about?"
"Dana told you about me? You know Dana? Wait..." It finally clicked what Jensen was trying to tell Katie. "You dated Dana? You mean you're no longer dating Dana? How did you even meet her? How the hell did Dana date you and not beg you to marry her? I mean look at you!" Katie realized she was rambling after seeing the look on Jensen's face and shut herself up.
Jensen just laughed lightly at Katie, her eyes squinting shut as she smiled. Katie felt herself smile because Jensen's laugh was so inviting. "Dana and I met a couple of years ago when she was stage managing one of my friend's shows. We ended up hitting it off and became really good friends and then she came on tour with me last year and yes, we dated for a while. Currently we're just friends." Jensen explained to Katie. "You're lucky. Dana is usually travelling. You happened to come to the one show in this venue she's working."
"She's here?" Katie perked up.
Jensen nodded. "I begged her to come help me out tonight. This is the place we met. It felt wrong doing a concert here without her." Jensen saw the look on Katie's face. She could tell Katie was excited by the fact that Dana was there. "By some twist of fate, you happen to show up the one night Dana is back here. Maybe that's a sign." Jensen smiled at Katie.
Almost as if on cue, Dana Thomas herself walked up to Jensen. She walked past Katie, not seeing her face. "Hey Moose, we have to do your sound check."
Katie smiled at the nickname Dana had for Jensen. "What did you just call her?"
"Moose. It's-" Dana's face dropped when she turned to see who had spoken. Dana looked like she had seen a ghost. "Katie?"
Jensen leaned into Dana, whispering. "I'm gonna do my sound check now." Dana couldn't respond because she was too busy gawking at Katie.
"I can't believe you know Jensen Parker." Katie used Jensen as an excuse to speak. She didn't know what else to say to Dana. "I can't believe you know Jensen Parker well enough to have a nickname for her."
"Yeah, we-" Dana cut herself off then cleared her throat. "We're friends." She corrected herself. "You look amazing." Dana was still in awe that Katie was standing in front of her.
Katie's cheeks reddened. "You don't look half bad yourself." There was a silence between them after that.
"You know," Dana half-smiled, "you were always my one that got away." There was another brief moment of silence before Dana shook her head to apologize. "I'm sorry. I-I don't know why I-"
"You're mine too, you know." Katie interrupted.
Dana inhaled deeply, gaining the courage to speak. "This may be crazy, but do you maybe want to grab dinner sometime soon?" She asked quickly.
Katie realized Dana was asking her on a date. "Actually," Katie saddened as she pointed to the dirty blonde who was still with the band from earlier, and still making them laugh. "Her name's Taylor."

"Wow, she's gorgeous." Dana shouldn't have been surprised that Katie had a girlfriend. She should've known that a girl as amazing as Katie would be in a relationship. Dana looked at Katie. "Well I'd still love to grab something to eat and catch up soon before I leave town again. It's been awhile."
Katie smiled, "I would love to."
☼ ☼ ☼
Dana was sitting in a coffee shop staring out the window. Her leg wouldn't stop bouncing under the table. She was nervous, and had no idea why. When Katie walked through the door, Dana shot out of her seat ready to greet her. The two got in line and ordered their drinks. They sat at a table by the window. There was a painful silence between them. Both of them were uncomfortable. They felt like they were putting on an act for each other.
Dana spoke up through the silence. "Do you want to go somewhere?"
"Where?"
Dana smirked. "Anywhere."
Dana drove to the spot on the side of the mountain that she and Katie used to spend their time together. The two felt more natural there. The conversation suddenly didn't feel forced. It was like they were in high school again. They talked about random subjects that came to their mind, but it made them happy that they were still comfortable with each other after all this time.
They had tried to stay in contact after going away to college, but as school and life went on, it got harder and harder. Even when holidays and breaks rolled around, it was hard to make time to see each other. They had lived across the street, but they were worlds apart.
They had both tried to move on from one another, but both had failed. Dana had dated quite a few girls over the years, but no one made her feel the way she felt with Katie. The closest thing she had was Jensen, but being with Jensen was too hard. And Jensen didn't want a relationship because of her past. Both Jensen and Dana agreed that being friends – with occasional benefits – was better for them. It didn't put any stress on them.
Katie didn't have much luck either. She had dated a couple people over the years, but it never worked out. No one seemed to be able to make her happy. Taylor was the first one Katie could see a future with since Dana. Taylor was gorgeous, and made Katie laugh like she never had before. Taylor was thoughtful and kind and really tried with their relationship. Katie couldn't have imagined a better girlfriend. But Taylor wasn't Dana.
"Well I hope you haven't brought any other girls up here." Katie teased Dana.
"Well don't hate me," Dana teased her back, "but I did bring Jensen here."
Katie placed her hand on her chest and gasped dramatically. "Honestly, if Jensen Parker wasn't so perfect, I think I'd be offended."
Dana laughed at Katie. "It was when we first met. She thought that she'd be able to walk down the street without being bombarded with fans and paparazzi, but she was wrong. So I took her here."
"It is a pretty nice escape. I miss it."
"Maybe you should take Taylor up here." Dana suggested.
"I would," Katie kicked her foot on the ground, moving dirt around, "but we broke up."
Dana perked up and her eyebrow rose. She couldn't even pretend to be sympathetic. She was too excited. "What happened?"
Katie shrugged and looked sincerely into Dana's eyes. "You."
☼ ☼ ☼
Katie walked Dana up to her hotel room. Dana was staying in a hotel near the venue that Jensen played at. She didn't want to have to drive from her mom's house to the venue so she planned to stay at the hotel for a few days before flying back to New York where she was now living.
Dana invited Katie inside. Katie shortly spoke up and announced she should leave since Dana had to catch a flight in the morning. "You know," Dana started, "I'm thinking I may need to come back into town soon."
Katie blushed. "I'd like that." Katie saddened when she thought about Dana leaving. She had just found her. She didn't want to lose her again. "Is tonight really your last night in town?"
Dana glanced at the floor. "Yeah. At least for awhile."
"Well," Katie took a step closer to Dana, "why not make the most of it?"
Dana swallowed. She was amazed at how straightforward Katie had gotten. "Katie," Dana was gawking at Katie's pink lips. "Are you...sure you want to do that? I mean you just broke up with your girlfriend." Dana knew what Katie was insinuating.
"Dana," Katie's eyebrow rose, "I've waited five years for you. I've never been more sure of anything in my life." Katie took another step closer to Dana. "I want this." Katie's eyes shifted between Dana's eyes and lips. Dana's breaths started to get shorter, and Katie smirked. She noticed how anxious Dana was getting.
Katie slowly leaned in closer to Dana, leaving a small gap between them. She was still smirking, seeing the trouble in Dana's eyes. Dana wasn't used to Katie being so forward. Katie slowly closed the gap between them, gently pressing her lips against Dana's.
Dana pressed into the kiss more, and Katie placed her hand on Dana's neck. Dana pulled Katie's waist closer to her. Katie ran her fingers through Dana's hair and deepened the kiss. Dana started walking forward, moving Katie towards the bed.
Katie turned them around and continued walking, not breaking the kiss until Dana's legs hit the edge of the bed. Katie's hand moved to the hemline of Dana's shirt. She slipped her hand under the shirt. Katie broke the kiss to remove the piece of fabric. She then lightly pushed Dana to lie down on the bed. Katie removed her own top, and Dana pulled her by the belt loops on top of her.
The two lost themselves in each other. They had been apart for so long, but in that moment in felt like they had been together forever. Every move that they made was in sync with one another. Dana was gentle and loving, until Katie started to get more aggressive, wanting all of Dana.
The world around them stopped. Time froze, and nothing else mattered. Dana and Katie only had one night to spend together before Dana had to leave, and they weren't going to waste it. Katie suddenly remembered why it had been so hard for her to move on from Dana.
Dana and Katie weren't perfect, but they were perfect together.
And both of them in that moment thought that just maybe, they could start again.
