《Lost & Insecure》Four - Friday Night Fights

"You promise, Dana?" Ashley pleaded over the phone.

Dana sighed lightly – too lightly for Ashley to hear. "Ash, I promise you I'll be at the game tonight." Dana reassured her. Dana had shared her doubts with Ashley about going to the football game and meeting some of the members of the photo club at school. Ashley managed to cheer Dana up, however, and convinced her that going would be a good idea.

"See you tonight." Ashley's smile could nearly be heard through the phone before she hung up. Dana slowly slid her phone into her back pocket and made her way to her dresser where her camera sat. She grabbed her camera, inspecting it slowly and closely as if inspecting an injured animal. Dana made her way downstairs, scrolling through the pictures that were still on her SD card in the camera.

"Haven't used it in awhile, huh?" Eddie glided past her, heading straight for the fridge.

"Not since before-" Dana stopped herself in the doorway of the kitchen, her entire body freezing in place.

"My parents or yours?" Eddie asked lowly, closing the fridge door.

Dana turned the camera around to reveal a picture of Eddie's parents, "Yours." She responded shortly.

"Dana, you can talk about them." Eddie turned around to face her, "I swear it won't kill me." He paused. "Ironic since they're dead."

"Edric!" Dana scolded.

"You know that's another thing you've refused to do since they passed." Eddie began, taking a bite of cold pizza. "You haven't called me by my actual full name. Only new made up ones you keep thinking of." Dana shrugged innocently, not knowing what to say. Eddie dismissed it, telling her that he didn't mind the new names. In fact, they always made him smile.

"Well on another note," Dana tried to change the subject to get their minds off of Eddie's parents, "are you coming to the football game? Please say yes because I really do not want to go alone."

"You won't be alone. Ash is there." Eddie said mocking Dana's nickname for Ashley, having been teasing Dana for the last week about how quickly they've become friends. Dana, insistent that a friend is all she was with Ashley, ignored Eddie's incessant teasing.

"She's a cheerleader, I won't be able to talk to her," Dana explained. "Ed just this once, do something for me. Make sure I don't get into any trouble. Please..." Dana smiled at him, drawing out every letter of the word please.

"Just this once," he quipped. Dana sent him a victorious smile before turning and leading him out the door. Eddie glanced at the pictures on Dana's camera during their brief drive to the school. "I forgot how great you were." Eddie spoke softly, browsing through the last photos taken of his parents. Dana glanced at Eddie with saddened eyes, wishing there was more she could do for him. Dana attempted to keep his mind off of his parents, but Eddie mostly ignored her comments until they got to the school.

The two stood in line at the entrance gate, both cheering each other up by people watching those around them. They heard someone distantly call their names and turned to see Mason walking towards them from inside the stadium. "Hey, you guys showed up," he sent them a large grin, showing off his straight white teeth.

Dana paid for tickets as Eddie walked towards Mason, sarcastically waving his hands with excitement, "We came!"

"I forced him to come," Dana explained to Mason.

"Oh gotcha," Mason nodded. He looked around as if he'd lost something. Dana questioned him, and he explained himself in short fragments, "My brother... somewhere...Zach...he was just..." Mason paused, puzzled. A voice called out to Mason and he perked his head up like a meerkat, hoping to find his brother. A boy that looked like a mini Mason, with the same hair and eyes, only shorter in height and more baby faced, walked over to the three with a smile and a mouth full of hot dog.

"Sorry," he apologized to Mason with a mouthful of food, "I got hungry."

Mason slapped his large hand onto his younger brother's shoulder, startling Zach slightly. "Zach," Mason looked to his brother then to Dana and Eddie and introduced the three to one another. Zach swallowed hard, embarrassed to be meeting new people while in the middle of stuffing his face. "Zach is one of the members of the photo club," Mason looked towards Dana. "He'll be taking photos with you tonight.

Zach wiped his hands on his pants then intended to stick his hand out to Dana, but hesitantly stopped himself before she could reach back. She chuckled at his awkward nerves. "It's nice to meet you," she smiled at him. Zach's face flushed, clearly embarrassed.

"You too," he smiled sheepishly making Eddie rolls his eyes. That only made Zach cower more. He clearly didn't have the confidence or expert social skills that his older brother had.

"Well," Mason interrupted, feeling the awkward tension in the air, "the game is about to start. Eddie, we should go find a place to sit." Eddie stood firm, not at all enthused to be at the game. "Hey," Mason sent him a wide grin, attempting to get a smile out of him, "if I catch a shirt from the t-shirt canon tonight, I promise it's all yours."

Eddie was still frowning but his voice was inquisitive. "Odds of that happening?"

Mason's grin grew, shrugging jokingly, "I mean I'm not trying to show off, but I have gotten one almost every home game for the past two years."

"Done." Eddie spoke quickly. He didn't return Mason's grin, but his frown did manage to disappear. He followed Mason to the bleachers and flicked Dana on his way past, making her slap his stomach out of reflex.

Dana turned to Zach and asked him what the plan usually was at football games for the photo club. After Zach took a few minutes to explain what could've – and should've – only taken a few seconds to explain, he and Dana split up and began to take pictures. Zach would reconvene with Dana every few minutes to check up on her, and both of them were wildly impressed with one another's abilities and creative eye. Throughout the game, Dana kept looking at Eddie, feeling bad for making him come. Fortunately, after the first quarter and a half, Eddie's mood seemed to improve greatly. Dana was thankful to have Mason in the stands cheering her cousin up.

Towards the end of the game, Dana and Zach switched their posts so that she was now photographing the fans, marching band, and cheerleaders. Both the band and the cheerleaders impressed Dana. Her previous school had both, but no one took them seriously. In fact, Dana rarely went to any football games because they were always full of people being obnoxious just to get attention and she didn't like that. She liked that everyone at Ridgeway seemed to genuinely enjoy themselves and being around one another. She was also appreciative of the fact that the marching band and cheer team clearly put their all into everything they did. Dana wasn't used to this. She wasn't used to people caring.

Dana caught herself being captivated by her subjects she was photographing. She couldn't manage to hide the small grin that pulled at the corner of her lips as she photographed the cheer team. The grin only grew as she watched Katie through the lens. Dana lowered her camera, the small grin playing across her face. Katie's eyes connected with Dana and both girls held their gaze for a moment. Katie lowered her head, breaking the stare. She was clearly spaced out and needed to gather her thoughts. Dana smiled to herself, unable to deny that there was something about Katie that made Dana feel as though she were being pulled towards her. Dana shook all thoughts of Katie out of her head and continued her task for the rest of the game. As the game ended and Eddie and Dana were getting ready to leave, Zach ran up stopping them. "Hey guys, we're going to get something to eat if you want to come." Ashley and Mason joined the group in the parking lot and after a lot of convincing from both Zach and Ashley, Dana and Eddie reluctantly agreed to going out.

After debating where to go, the teenagers all settled on a spot and headed towards their cars. Dana turned quickly, not seeing Jesse walking behind her. He had his arm around Katie, and failed to look at anything besides her so he accidentally ran into Dana just as she was pulling her camera strap off of her neck. The camera slipped from Dana's grasp and a loud, collective gasp could be heard from the entire group. Dana bent down quickly, picking her camera up and inspecting it muttering, "Nonononononono." She sighed, relieved that all that was damaged seemed to be the UV protector which easily screwed off of the lens and wasn't too expensive to replace.

Before Dana could speak, though, Eddie had already stepped up to Jesse with his chest puffed out like a bird, "Watch where you're going!" Eddie snapped at Jesse, who was completely unaware of what had just occurred. "Are you going to apologize to her?" Eddie gestured towards Dana who was still crouched down.

"For what?" Jesse peeled his arm off of Katie and stepped up to Eddie, "She's the one that ran into me." Jesse's tone was calm, but the anger in his eyes matched Eddie's perfectly.

"You could've broken her camera!"

"Oh please," Jesse rolled his eyes, "you're just looking for an excuse to stand up to me and show off. I've seen the way you've been looking at my girlfriend and I-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Dana stepped in between the two, "How old are you two? Can you just relax and move on?"

Jesse looked at Eddie, ignoring Dana's remarks, "Oh, you need someone to fight your fights for you?"

Dana snapped at Jesse again, "Actually he doesn't. But if I let him go, you might need to go to the emergency room and that's not fun for anyone. So why don't you go back to your little perfect friends and your perfect girlfriend and your life that's so freaking perfect."

"Okay, you don't know me so just stop talking."

"I don't? Let me take a wild guess then. You're the most popular guy in school. Right?" Jesse remained silent as Dana spoke, only serving to prove her points further. "Girls are drooling over you when you pass them in the hall. Correct? You're dating Katie because she's hot, and it makes everyone jealous and because she's just so freaking perfect. Just. Like. You." Dana took small steps forward as she spoke, but Jesse stood firmly in his spot, only clenching his jaw in response to her words. "Oh," she continued, "and your friends think you're like the messiah and everything you do is amazing and the end all be all. Seeing as how everyone groveled at your feet during the game, I'd assume you probably only put enough effort in most, if not all, of your classes so you're good enough to get by and play football. In fact, you probably think that you're going go to college because of football or some other sport I'm sure you're the star athlete at as well in this tiny shoebox of a town and you're going to grow up and have a perfect life with a bunch of money and a trophy wife and everything is going to work out for you and because of how this sick, twisted world works, that's probably what's going to happen! Oh and on another note, you don't need to bathe in cologne in order for it to work. Or is it that you just don't know how to correctly use the spray nozzle?"

Everyone was silent with their jaws nearly dropped in awe of Dana. Jesse ignored her and glared at Eddie, "You better watch your girlfriend or you're both going to regret it one day."

Eddie rolled his eyes, "First of all, she's my cousin. Second of all, you're just being an ass because you know everything she just said is true."

"What did you just say to me?" Jesse began to charge after Eddie.

Dana stopped him, "Hey back off! This is no longer his fight. It's mine."

"Sorry," Jesse scoffed, "I don't hit girls."

"Neither do I. But for you, I'll make an exception." Dana punched Jesse across his square jaw.

Jesse raised the back of his hand to retaliate, but was stopped by Eddie tackling him onto the pavement. The boys began to fight until a teacher spotted them and broke them up. "You two!" He pointed to Eddie and Jesse. "Stay here. Everyone else, GO!" Everyone left except for Dana, Jesse, Eddie, and Katie. Dana insisted that the fight was her fault, and wouldn't leave. The teacher demanded their names. After they spoke up, the teacher took a calming breath before raising his voice to ask, "What the hell is going on here?"

"They started it!" Jesse whined.

Katie interrupted and turned to the teacher, "Nothing is going on. It was just a misunderstanding."

Jesse's voice squeaked, "Misunderstanding? I'm trying to nicely take my girlfriend out to eat after a victory and these two attacked us!"

The teacher looked at Katie, "is that what happened?"

"Uh..." Katie looked at Dana and Eddie, then at Jesse, "yes..." She swallowed hard, her eye connecting with the ground.

"What?" Eddie yelled, "She's lying!"

The teacher rolled his eyes in annoyance. "I will deal with you all on Monday, just go home and stay away from each other. Goodnight!" He walked away without another word.

Eddie shook his head disappointedly at Katie then walked away with Dana. "I guess you're right. She is one of those girls." Eddie mumbled to his cousin. Katie sighed, overhearing Eddie's statement.

"Come on babe, don't letthem bother you." Jesse put his arm around Katie and led her to the car. "Justforget they even exist. It's not like they'll matter to us after todayanyways."
