Y/n was packing their bag, tears streaming down their face as they did so. They were alone in their cabin.

Stupid gods, they thought. Always have to mess around in other peoples' business. Zeus couldn't just let me live with my father in peace, could he? He HAD to be so jealous, he murdered my only family on the mortal side!

They looked up for a moment as thunder rumbled, taking in the too-bright, golden cabin, and king-size bed.

"Zeus," their voice broke for a moment. "Just let me insult you in peace. Y-you've caused me enough pain." Y/n internally winced at their stutter. Then they heard a knock on the door.

Who in the Hades is up at 2:00 a.m. other than me? They wondered.

"Come in," Y/n said half-heartedly, hoping whoever it was wouldn't hear them and would just go away. Of course, they didn't. Instead, Y/n's closest friend, Nico di Angelo, walked in.

"I know what you're doing," he said quietly while closing the door. He stepped closer to Y/n.

"Well," Y/n hiccuped, "can you really blame me? The -hic- so-called awesome, powerful king of the gods just killed my mother!"

"No," Nico said, now right beside Y/n. "I can't blame you. I'm not here to stop you. I know how you feel."

"Oh, do you?" Y/n directed all her anger at him. "Do you really know how I feel?"

"You feel like the gods have betrayed you, because they have. You feel like you have no one left to care for or about you, which is incorrect. I'm here. I care about you. I'm here to say I want to join you." Y/n stared at him for a moment.

"You- you want to join me?" Nico gestured to the backpack on his back, which Y/n hadn't noticed earlier.

"I'm already packed. Just say the word and I'll go with you, Y/n/n."

"I- I don't know what to say. I just want to escape all things non-mortal..." Y/n looked at Nico hesitantly, taking in his sincere, brown eyes. Nico took their hand.

"Then let's pretend we're just two normal friends, living together. Would that be okay?" He looked at them.

"Perfect," they murmured. Then they burst into tears. Nico didn't hesitate to wrap them in a hug.

"I-I'm sorry. It's just- he was my only mortal family left! M-my auntie died in that car accident, and my grandparents before I was born, and I j-just don't know how to cope!" Y/n buried their head in his chest.

"Don't apologize," Nico said, wrapping his arms around them tightly. After a few minutes of Y/n crying, they pulled away and put on a brave face.

"I j-just have one thing left to pack, and then we can leave."

"Take all the time you need." Nico kissed their forehead, then released them from his grip. Y/n nodded, then got up, grabbed a diadem given to them as a birthday present last year from their father, and packed it.

"Let's go."
