《The Demon King (The Demon King, #1) - Completed》Chapter 44 - Cruel Fate

I woke up this morning feeling so happy. It honestly was the first morning I've woken up here in a truly good mood. I turned to my right, and frowned a little when I didn't see Dimitri there. He probably got up early before me.

I sat up and stretched my arms before deciding to jump out of bed. I went to the bathroom and changed out of my night clothes. I then checked the time and noticed that breakfast was going to be served in a few minutes, so I decided to get Thomas and go downstairs.

"Izzie I'm tired." Thomas complained rubbing his eyes as I woke him up.

"Breakfast is served in a few minutes, Thomas. You can go back to sleep afterwards if you want." I said, helping him up. He obliged nodding his head.

We walked downstairs to find everyone already eating. I helped Thomas to his seat before sitting down in mine. Dimitri wasn't here yet which I was surprised about since he was usually always here on time for breakfast.

I talked to Pam and Thomas throughout breakfast, but my mind kept wandering to why Dimitri still wasn't here. Did he eat breakfast early? Was he busy with his Kingly duties? He probably was busy, I concluded.

I took Thomas back to his room after breakfast, because he really wanted to go back to sleep. Once he was asleep, I decided to go and look for Dimitri.

"Stark, have you seen Dimitri anywhere?" I asked Stark, hoping he'd know something about Dimitri's whereabouts.

"He's probably in his office." He replied monotonously before walking off.

"Thanks." I said before I made my way over to Dimitri's office. I felt kinda stupid for not checking here first. I mean obviously he'd be here if he was busy doing work or whatever it is that he has to do. I mean, I don't imagine being a King easy, there has to be quite a lot for him to do.

Once I reached his office, I found his door open and I looked inside to see him sitting at his desk, frowning down at the papers in front of him. He looked kind of angry as he sat there reading something. "Dimitri." I said softly, causing him to look up. He stared at me for two seconds before glaring down at his papers again.

"Leave." He demanded sounding harsh. I was very surprised at his tone.

"Dimitri, are you okay?" I asked concerned, as I took a few steps inside his office.

"Isabella, just fucking leave!" He growled out in anger, crushing the paper he was holding in his hand. I was really taken aback by how angry he seemed to be.

I simply raised my hands up in surrender before turning around around to leave. I wasn't leaving because he told me to. Instead, I left to go get him some breakfast because an empty stomach tends to make a person even more annoyed and angry then they'd usually be. At least I know that's the case with me. If I'm hungry, I turn into a monster basically. So I'm assuming that he didn't have any breakfast.

I went down to the kitchen, put some waffles onto a plate. I then grabbed a bottle of maple syrup. I put everything on a tray, with a glass of milk and started carrying the tray upstairs. As I walked upstairs, I wondered where demons got their food from. Did they just take it from earth? Or could they actually grow all the same types of plants in Rovana?

Once I reached Dimitri's office again, I walked inside and set the tray down in front of him. He looked up at me with the most murderous glare I've ever seen him give anyone.

"Did you not fucking hear what I said?" He spoke in a low, dangerous voice.

"Yeah, you told me to leave and I did. But now I'm back." I said smiling down at him. Before he could say something, I spoke up again. "I brought you waffles. Eat them if you're hungry and we can discuss what's wrong. Okay?" I asked as I pushed some of the books on his desk aside, creating space for me to sit. Once I was comfortable, I turned to look at him expectantly. He still looked pissed, but not as much as before.

I reached down and grabbed one of his hands in mine before looking down at him. I noticed how tired he looked, which surprised me a lot since Demons didn't get tired easily. He looked so exhausted it was very concerning. No wonder he was so cranky.

"Dimitri, are you okay?" I asked softly causing him to jerk his hand out of my grasp.

"I'm fucking great!" He sarcastically spoke, throwing a bunch of documents to the ground in anger. The papers went flying everywhere, creating a huge mess on the ground.

"Dimitri! You're creating more of a mess for yourself!" I exclaimed as I got off the table and went to pick up all the papers for him. He sighed as he got up off his chair to pick the papers up as well, but I stopped him.

"No, Dimitri. I can pick these up. You need to go and lay down on the couch and just relax for a bit." I said as I grabbed the papers from his hands and set them down.

"I don't fucking have time to relax. I have all these priorities that I need to keep up with." He growled out causing me to glare at him.

"Well guess what Dimitri? I don't care if you have time or not. I don't care if you have all these priorities to take care of, because you're more important than all these things you need to do. So take care of yourself first, before taking care of anything else." I sternly said causing him to growl in frustration.

"You don't fucking get it Isabella! I have so much shit to do that I can't just stop and rest. You don't understand how hard and how much work it is to run a whole freaking kingdom. There's no time for rest. Especially now that I'm such a big risk to Rovana." He exclaimed, lightly pushing past me to pick up the papers off the ground.

"Dimitri listen. You go back to your desk and continue with what you were doing and I'll pick up these papers for you. Okay?" I said causing him to sigh and finally agree when I sent him another glare.

He walked back to his desk and sat down while I bent down and picked up the rest of the papers. A few minutes later, I had picked every single paper up off the ground and I turned around to go and place the stack back on Dimitri's desk. As soon as I turned, I noticed Dimitri's gaze fixed straight on me. He then looked down at the stuff in front of him and began writing something down.

I placed the stack down and walked behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist, hugging him from behind as I rested my head on his shoulder. I stood like that for a few quiet minutes, just watching him write. I then pulled away and brought the tray full of food closer to me. I grabbed the fork, cut off a piece of the waffle and brought it towards Dimitri's mouth. He looked at me and I smiled at him before he finally opened his mouth and accepted the fork.

For the next ten to fifteen minutes, I fed him waffles as he worked hard on writing whatever it was that he was writing. There was something really peaceful about watching him work. I actually didn't get bored at all, sitting there in silence. It was quite nice and satisfying.

Once he was done eating breakfast, I decided to give his shoulders a nice massage since he seemed so tense. I heard him sigh in satisfaction as I worked all the knots out of his shoulders. Not only was he enjoying this, but I was too. I mean I got to feel his muscles and it was pretty great.

Suddenly Dimitri grabbed my hand stopping me. He then brought me around towards him to the front and pulled me down onto his lap. He had his left arm holding me around my waist while his other arm rested on my thigh sending wonderful warmth throughout my body. I smiled up at him as he stared down at me with the most serious look on his face.

"What's up with the serious look?" I asked, wrapping both my arms around his neck and smiling up at him.

"Just wondering why I bothered falling for someone so annoying." He said causing me to gasp and glare at him.

"You know what? Fine! I'll leave and then you and your sad little ass can come crying back to me." I said as I got up off his lap and started walking away in anger when suddenly he grabbed my hand stopping me.

"What do you want now?" I grumbled in annoyance, causing him to smile up at me.

"You." He said, his beautiful red eyes trained on me, glowing. "Come on baby, you should know I want you. I've been wanting you since the first day I laid eyes on you." He said, grinning causing me to gape at him. Did he just use the exact same line I used on him before?

"You're such an asshole sometimes." I stated before he jerked me towards him, causing me to land in his lap again. This time I was completely facing him, my legs straddling his waist and my hands resting against his shoulders.

"Yes, but I'm your asshole, so it's okay." He said grinning, causing me to shake my head at him.

"You're so cheesy sometimes." I said trying to hide the fact that I found that absolutely adorable.

"Let's be real, you love it." He said causing me to shake my head in denial.

"Sure Dimitri, I totally do." I said mildly sarcastic as I leaned down and placed my head onto his shoulder, looking up at him.

"Don't lie to me." He said causing me to smile at him.

"I'm not lying." I lied, grinning now as he pouted. I don't think he noticed he was doing it, which made it a billion times cuter.

"You're such a liar." He said before leaning down and pressing his lips down against mine. I immediately closed my eyes and kissed him back, savouring the wonderful feel of his lips against mine. He pulled away too soon causing me to whimper and reach up to kiss him again but he just smiled and pulled away.

"You're so annoying." I said, with my arms crossed across my chest.

"Well if you want me to kiss you then admit that you were lying and then tell me everything you love about me." He said causing me to glare at him.

"You conceited asshole." I grumbled, annoyed at how I wanted him to kiss me. "I was lying. Happy?" I stated causing him to lean down and press a kiss on my lips before pulling away again.

"I love you." I said to which he smiled and leaned down to press a kiss on the side of my neck. "I really love the way you kiss me as well." I said causing him to drag his lips a

down my neck a little before kissing me there. He then stopped again waiting for me to say something else. "I love the way your eyes glow with love for me." I whispered and he then, moved his lips down again and kissed me.

Each time I said something that I loved about him, he moved down just a little bit and kissed me in that spot. "I love how you let me bitch at you." I said causing him to chuckle, sending vibrations through me as he pressed another kiss at my collarbone.

"I love the way you smile. It's so cute." I said causing him to pull away and look up at me.

"Cute? Really?" He asked causing me to nod my head at him. "Don't call me cute. Ever." He exclaimed, causing me to giggle.

"Why not? You are really cute though." I said smiling as he scrunched his nose up in disapproval.

"No I'm not." He said before he went even further down and kissed me. His lips were starting to get dangerously low, but I didn't seem to care. It did make me feel really nervous but I wanted him to go lower and kiss me. I felt comfortable with him doing that. Everything about Dimitri felt right. Now I could finally say I understand what everyone means when they say they found someone who makes everything feel so right.

"I love how adorable you are." I said causing him to glare at me. I grinned in return before reaching up to peck his lips.

He then reached behind me, clearing the table before setting me down on it. He took ahold of the hem of my shirt but stopped there, looking up at me as if to ask for my approval. I smiled a nervous smile. I was scared he was going to compare me to all those other demon girls he's seen naked or half-naked.

Demons were perfect in every way. Their fast healing abilities kept them perfect looking, no marks, no scars, perfect hair and skin and perfect bodies.

He softly smiled back at me, taking my hand in his and squeezing it in assurance, as if he knew I was feeling nervous. It probably showed on my face. "I won't take your shirt off if you don't want me to, Isabella. I don't want you to feel pressurized into doing anything you don't want to. I don't want you to feel like you have to do something just because I want it." He spoke softly but firmly, making sure to look me straight in my eyes to send the point across. "If you ever think I'm taking it too far, I want you to tell me. Don't ever let me do anything you don't want. I want you to tell me everything. I want you to feel comfortable telling me to stop and to not do something if you don't want me to. Don't ever be afraid to tell me, Isabella."

I nodded my head, smiling at how sweet he was. "I want you to continue. It's just.. I was a little scared of...." I trailed off looking away.

"Scared of what?" He asked softly, encouraging me to talk as he grabbed my chin, making me look up at him.

"Scared that I'm not good enough and that you'd compare me to all the other girls-"

"You're insane Isabella. It's impossible for anyone to be better than you. You're perfect in every way, Izzie. Why are you scared when you're so perfect?" He asked causing me to blush and look down at my hands in my lap. Dimitri was too nice to me sometimes. He was the one who was perfect. Too perfect to be real sometimes. But he was real. He had his flaws just like everyone does. The only difference was that his flaws are perfection.

I grabbed his hands and brought them down to the hem of shirt, causing him to smile. He slowly lifted my shirt up and threw it off, causing the nervous feeling to fill me up again. I was wearing a bra and he had seen me like this numerous times before but those were for a couple quick seconds. This time it'd be for longer.

He gently pushed me down, causing me to lay down on the table. He then leaned over whispering the word beautiful, before reaching down and placing a lingering kiss in the dip of my chest causing me to sigh. His fingers gently stroked the sides of my waist as he did so. He had his eyes trained up on me the whole time as he had kissed me in such an area, watching my reaction.

"You're so innocent." He whispered against my skin, smiling up at me. "I like it."

"Shut up." I mumbled out causing him to laugh, his lips lightly touching my skin as he did so, sending shivers through me.

He then started kissing a trail down my stomach, causing me to close my eyes and let out sighs. I loved how the light dusting of stubble on his jaw and around his mouth felt as it lightly rubbed against my skin. Once he reached the hem of my pants, he started kissing back upwards toward my chest. He kissed past my chest and up towards my neck again. Once he reached the base of my neck, he started sucking and nipping at the skin there, causing me to gasp out. He was going to leave so many hickeys, I could already tell. I grabbed onto his head, holding his mouth against my neck as he kissed and bit me. I ran my fingers through his soft strands, moaning in pleasure.

Suddenly Dimitri pulled back to look at me and his eyes were glowing so brightly. "I love you so much, you have no fucking idea." He spoke in a low husky voice.

"How romantic." I heard another male voice speak up in amusement, causing Dimitri to immediately pull me up in a seating position and pull me against him so I was covered from the front.

"What the fuck do you want Devon!" Dimitri snapped, sounding really pissed.

"Woah there Dimitri! I'm sorry for interrupting the little love fest you had going on there but we have some important business to take care of right now. I'm sure Isabella can wait for another time." Devon said, trying so hard to hide the smile creeping up on his face.

"Stop fucking staring at her!" Dimitri growled out sounding like he was going to murder someone.

"Dimitri, chill. I'm not staring at her, gosh. Here, I'll turn around." He said chuckling before turning around.

Dimitri swore at him before turning to me. He set me down on the ground, picking my shirt up and putting it on me. "We'll continue this later because Devon's a fucking annoying ass, dickhead who likes to ruin everything!" Dimitri said, glaring at Devon's back. Devon simply burst out laughing.

"Isabella, what are you doing to Dimitri? Dimitri never yells at others for interrupting us when I'm with him. You're the only one who seems to get those luxuries." Devon said causing me to laugh.

"Fucking Bastard." Dimitri said causing Devon and I both to laugh.

"Be nice Dimitri." I said, leaning up to kiss his cheeks. "And have fun discussing whatever you two have to discuss. I'll be with Pam and Thomas if anyone needs me." I said before leaving.

*****

The next day, Dimitri, Devon and I spent so much time researching and trying to find a way to help get rid of the shadow. But we couldn't find anything. There was literally nothing. I decided to go take a lunch break while Dimitri and Devon decided to continue searching, hopefully finding something useful.

Once I was done, I came back only to hear them both arguing. "Have you gone insane Dimitri?" Devon exclaimed in anger.

"Yes I fucking have!" Dimitri yelled back.

"What about Isabella? Do you not realize what this'll do to her? She fucking loves you! She'll be absolutely devastated when you leave. She'll become depressed like your dad, do you fucking want that? And what about Rovana? We need a King! You can't just give up and surrender yourselves to the Shadows!" Devon exclaimed in so much anger. I was shocked too at what I heard. Dimitri was planning on surrendering to them? He couldn't. I'd make sure he wouldn't.

"I'm a danger to Isabella and Rovana! I'll ruin them both. I'll never be able to live with myself if I did that. And let's be real, there's no cure for me." Dimitri said causing Devon to sigh in frustration.

"What about me? I don't want to lose my best friend!" He exclaimed.

"You can suck it up. You know this is for the best. And besides, you've never needed me. It's always been me relying on you. You'll be fine without me. And for Rovana, I was planning on passing down the throne to you. You know everything about running Rovana and you've done a lot of work for me as well. You're the best person to take my place, Devon. As for Isabella, I'll erase her good memories of me and replace them with bad ones. She'll remember me as the monster she always expected me to be. She'll remember me as someone so horrid that she'll be happy I'm dead. She won't feel any loss, I'll make sure of it." Dimitri said causing me to gape at him with my mouth wide open.

He couldn't do this. He couldn't. I won't let him. I will not let him make me think he's some horrible person. He's the one person I've truly ever loved. I don't want to forget him. I want to help him. I want to save him from that Shadow. But how am I supposed to do that, when he's completely given up on himself?

Why was this all so complicated? Why couldn't we all just be happy for once? Why is fate so cruel? Dimitri's suffered enough. He deserves happiness. But life is cruel. And things never work out right.
