《Dusk & Dawn》Chapter 49

As soon as I got the call from Quinn I'd been speeding from the flower shop I'd been at just to get to her. Chris, that motherfucker was going to pay, especially if he set even just one finger on her.

I kept the phone on loudspeaker so I could hear what was going on as I weaved in and out of traffic.

Don't worry Quinn, I'm almost there baby.

I didn't even bother to turn the car off, I just jumped straight out, left the door wide open and sprinted for my life to her. She was my life now.

My shoes squeaked along the linoleum floor as I barrelled around the corner and into her room.

"Hey, get the fuck away from her ass hole!" I yelled, storming up to him.

Don't touch him Mase, don't give him any evidence to use against you.

Luckily I had called one of my colleagues from the police force on my way from the car phone.

I just need to keep him talking, keep him here until the cops arrive.

Quinn's face showed a mixture of fear and relief. I quickly scanned her for any signs of harm when I noticed blood was trickling from a point in her arm where the catheter once was. That's when I saw she was holding it in her hand like a weapon poised towards Chris. A smile tugged at my lips.

Good girl.

"How nice of you to show Mr Ambrose. Did you need more work? Or are you here to fight for the girl?" Chris' weasel looking face mocked me. No doubt he was jacked, his pupils were the size of saucers.

"I'm here to tell you to back the fuck off man. I don't want her involved. If you ever touch her..." I felt my muscles clench in my jaw. The roar of my blood was thick through my ears I could barely hear what Chris said next.

"Or what? Please, I would love to hear a threat I could use for evidence." He said tapping his jacket pocket. I knew from previous experience that he recorded every conversation just in case he could use bits and pieces to incarcerate people who just simply piss him off. I was at the very top of his list.

"Freeze!" An authoritative booming voice yelled from the doorway. Thank God it was Steve, he managed to get here relatively quickly even though he was over the other side of town when I called.

As Steve held his gun pointed towards Chris, the room went silent and the only thing that could be heard was Chris' slow chuckle.

"Relax mate, as far as I know, visiting a patient isn't illegal now is it?" As he was talking I made it to Quinn and gently pressed some gauze against her bleeding vein.

"No, it's not illegal but I do believe she doesn't want you here, so although I can't arrest you, I can escort you out." I could hear Steve's resolve wane. He was just as sick of Chris' bullshit as I was. We'd been working together to try and pin him for something for many years but the prick covered his tracks ten times over. No doubt he was taught by the best.

Luckily he didn't have to be told twice. He left without dispute, but I knew that it wouldn't be the last I saw of him... especially because Quinn was on his radar now.
