《Dusk & Dawn》Chapter 33

"What's he doing here?" Mason asked taking my hand and began leading me in the opposite direction where my father was.

"I dunno, he's being a creep." Mason threw his head back in laughter. Even though I wanted to stay and watch him laugh all night, I just wanted to get the hell out of there.

"Can we leave? Please? I don't want to see him." I watched the ground as I walked.

"Yeah, sure." A concerned tone tainted his voice slightly.

"I'll just text Lexi to let her know." I took my hand out of his and started tapping a message to Lex. She replied back almost immediately.

"She said her parents don't mind driving them back home. They want to spend more time with her and Zach." I smiled, happy for Lexi and put my phone in the back pocket of my jeans. I nervously clutched my dog tag in my hand as we walked to the car. In moments like these I felt like it gave me a little more courage.

Mason clicked the remote to unlock the car and the indicators blinked once. With the sudden burst of light I saw a shadow trailing behind us. I knew exactly who it was.

"Dad, come out. I know you're following me." I turned around and crossed my arms, unimpressed and a little scared. I saw his head peek out from behind some shrubs.

"State your name!" He called.

"What? Dad, c'mon, it's me."

"State your name!" He called again, more aggressively.

"Uhh, Quinn. Dad, just come out. What are you doing here?"

"I've come to save my daughter. State your name demon or I'll have no choice but to call on divine help." He yelled holding his bible up in the air towards me as if he was using it for protection.

"Dad, I'm not possessed." I rolled my eyes. Mason let out a small laugh because he knew it was ridiculous. My dad came walking slowly out from the bushes holding his cross and bible out in front of him, pointing them at me as if they were a weapon.

"He's serious?" Mason whispered with a shocked look on his face. I clenched my jaw and nodded, embarrassed.

"My daughter would never go and live a life of sin the way I raised her. When she came of age you took her from me!" Anger swallowed his whole face showing every deep wrinkle in between his brows and around his dark eyes.

"Dad, when I 'came of age' I wanted to experience life. I wanted to experience life especially after..."

"Stop! Stop talking demon!" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small plastic bottle. I put my hands up in surrender as he unscrewed the lid. My stomach wrung itself into a tight knot hoping it was acid or another type of dangerous chemical. Mason put his arm protectively in front of me but my father threw the liquid at my face over Mason's shoulder. It was cold and ran down my neck and soaked through to my bra and trickled down my stomach.

Water? Yes, thank God it's just water.

"Holy water? Really dad?" I wiped my face with my hand and spat out the rest.

"But... if you're not possessed... then... you chose to do those things? You CHOSE?!" He dropped the bottle and covered his mouth with both hands, more upset than if I had really been possessed.

"Yes, that's what I've been trying to tell you. I wanted to finally start living life like a normal person. Dancing isn't a sin dad, neither is singing or drawing or wearing makeup." I tried to go easy on him, watching him wipe a few tears away.

"Yes, yes they are Quinn! Even the way you were touching that boy was wrong! Remember? No touching until you're married! You're tainted now! The worst part is you've defiled your body with markings! It says in the bible not to mark your body and you've deliberately gone against God. You're Satan's bride now!" He fell to his knees clutching his crucifix to his chest muttering in tongues.

Mason's head shot in my direction.

"Defiled your body? What does he mean?" Mason's eyebrows drew closer together.

"It's not important. Don't listen to him." I shook my head trying to play it off. My heart wringing ever so tight from the stress.

"Dad, I'm sorry if I hurt you and mum but I cant keep living my life locked away." Tears started to well up in my eyes.

"After you and mum cut me off I realised that I was never going to be what you want, no matter how hard I try. I spent all of my life trying to gain your approval but I'm tired of making myself sick worrying about what you and mum think of me. I can't anymore. You used to make me feel ashamed for what I did, but it's who I am. I can't be ashamed of who I am anymore." A tear fell down my check and I wiped it away before anyone could see. Mason put his hand on the middle of my back which helped to sooth the recent hurt I felt because of my parents which was still so raw.

My father slowly got up from his knees and walked towards me with his head dropped low. He grabbed my wrist and squeezed so tight I could feel my fingers tingling from lack of circulation. His head raised and I looked him in the eye. I have never seen so much hatred in one person.

"You're not ashamed of what you've done? Look at what you've done to your body! If you're not ashamed anymore then why do you hide it? Why don't you show the rest of the world what Satan's whore looks like!" He yelled a few centimetres from my face and began pulling on the sleeve of my shirt trying to rip my shirt off. Mason jumped in between us as I tried to push my dad off me.

"Dad, please, let me go! I'm not 10 anymore!" I started to yell back at him. I didn't want to punch or kick him because he was still my father, but he scared the shit out of me even to this day.

Mason managed to get his arms locked around my fathers hips and pull him away from me. There was a loud 'riiiiiiip' sound as we were dragged apart. Mason let go of my dad's waist but still kept a hold on his shirt. My dad started cackling and fell back on the gravel just laughing like a mental patient, staring at me.

The right sleeve of my blouse was ripped clean off where the stitches joined the fabric and my arm was bare and out in the open for Mason and my dad to see. I had black and grey tattoos spanning from my hand all the way up to my collarbone which I had gotten when I chose to leave home and 'live life'. I rubbed my arm and swallowed hard. I couldn't change the past and I didn't want to. This is who I really was and I had no choice but to face it now.

"You disgust me!" My father spat onto the ground next to him in pure hatred. I was sick of being spoken to like that, after all those years of horrible words from him and mum, I finally snapped.

"Well it's not like anything's changed! You've always been disgusted with me no matter how hard I try. I'm fucking done dad. Done!" I push both my hands out in front of me and start walking to the car. I heard Mason's low voice threaten something to my father and then his footsteps crunched close behind me.

"You're gonna burn in hell girl. You're Satan's now. Down the track when you have your funeral your mother and I wont be there." He said with a sick smile in his voice. I stopped at the car door with my hand on the door handle.

"Well good news for you dad, you wont have to fucking wait that long!" I opened the car door and slammed it shut. Mason started the car and backed up a little before putting it into drive. I looked one last time at my dad and he threw his bible at the car before we drove off away from him and my past.
