《Dusk & Dawn》Chapter 9

I manage to reach my destination with 10 minutes to spare. I come to a modern looking building with a sign made out of neon lights that read 'Next'.

A club? Definitely not what I was expecting but I'll keep an open mind. I do need the experience.

I push on the silver glass door and go inside. The floor is covered with a dark linoleum with flecks of silvery sparkles that remind me of stars. My jaw falls open as I look up and see glass chandeliers hanging with the light reflecting through the crystals making rainbows dance around the walls an floor of the room. This was just the foyer.

I wonder what the actual stage looks like!

"Miss Eden?" I hear from behind me. My shoulders rise in shock and I turn around to see a young looking man with a shaved head dressed in black slacks with red suspenders and white button down.

"Yes, that's me." Switching my resume from my right hand to my left I shake his hand.

"I believe I spoke to you over the phone. You're even more gorgeous than you sound." He smiled with one side of his lips upturned. I pressed my mouth into a tight smile, not knowing how to take compliments in general. He couldn't have been a day over 25.

"Please, through here. Get yourself set up on stage. You'll find everything you need is up there." He held the door open for me and ushered me through. It was the most exquisite venue I've ever set foot in. There were LED lights lining the edge of the bar with wine glasses hanging overhead. There were plush sitting areas wrapped with sheer curtains that draped from the ceiling all the way to the floor. The tiles were embossed with gold filigree and sparkles were scattered throughout. My eyes eventually found the stage which was lit with a spotlight.

I walked carefully making sure I didn't trip on anything. It was a unique talent of mine, tripping on flat floor, UP steps, thin air basically. Once on stage I took a seat at the piano and gave a few keys a light tap testing them out.

"Okay love, you can proceed whenever you're ready." Chris said with elbows leaning back on the bar. I squinted and noted 3 other figures sitting with him.

Deep breath. What song should I do keeping what I know about the venue and the boss in mind?

Once I made a decision on the song, I began playing the chords with my eyes shut, thinking about my family and started playing, my memories of home swimming in my mind.

I sung picturing my mum and dad welcoming me back home with open arms. Singing with everything I had in my being. With all the desire I could muster. When I played the last chord a silent tear ran down my cheek. At least if I didn't get the job I knew I gave my best. I wiped the tear with a quick sweep of my hand hoping not to draw too much attention. I didn't want to come across emotionally unstable.

"That was very moving sweetheart." Chris called. His voice echoing in the empty venue.

"Now we know you can do ballads, can we hear a cover of a more upbeat song that you know? Anything at all within the last 10 years will suffice. We just need to know that you voice is malleable." He explained. Murmuring began at the tables beside Chris. I shifted in my seat trying not to let the nerves get the best of me.

I gave a short nod and returned my fingers to the piano. I pressed a few keys trying to find the right note before starting.

I sung the lyrics spot on and didn't make one mistake. I just imagined I was back in my bedroom playing because I loved it, not just for a job. Once the song was finished I heard deep clapping sounds come from Chris' direction. There had to be at least 4 sets of hands clapping for me and even a wolf whistle. My cheeks flushed.

"That was astounding Miss Eden. You're truly talented." He spoke as he held out his hand to guide me off stage.

"I think it goes without saying that you're hired." He placed his hand on the middle of my back. This guy was really touchy and it made me a little uncomfortable. I tried to lean forward a little to give his hand and my back some distance.

"The boys and I were discussing using the second song in the live performance this Friday night. We'd love to rehearse with you if you're willing to spend a little more time with us this afternoon." His dark eyes seemed to be almost black as he stared into me. He gave me an uneasy feeling but a job is a job.

We spent the next few hours practising and getting the sound just right. Frankie was the smallest of the guys in the group and he worked the speakers and anything related to the technical side of things. Jackson was responsible for the electric drum kit and played as if he had many years of experience under his belt. I later on discovered that Chris was the leader and worked the sound desk and mixed all the songs.

The boys all explained that their sound had always had male vocals and they were missing something so they decided to put an ad out. I soon felt a part of the family with the exception of my instincts telling me to be careful.

I've never been around this many males in a private setting, that's all. My parents would never have allowed it. It's just years of conditioning and habit that I need to unlearn.

I chose to rule with my head over my gut and give them the benefit of the doubt, after all, I needed the money and I wasn't about to ask my parents.
