《Dusk & Dawn》Chapter 4

The bell rang signalling to move onto the next class.

"I'll catch up with you later." I tell Lex and give a sly smile knowing she would hang back and talk to prince charming. The rest of the classes up until lunch were long and boring, especially since I was the loner in the back row watching everyone settle into their little cliques.

At lunch I see Lexi waving me down from a long table in the cafeteria. It still felt weird actually getting invited to sit at a table instead of sitting in the bathroom stall eating alone and reading the latest book I had borrowed from the library.

I walk past the first few tables which are full up already and set my tray down across from Lexi. To her left was Zach and to her right was a red headed guy using his knife and fork as drumsticks on his plate which brought back memories of that day at church.

"Quinn this is Zach from English class." She explained, opening her chocolate yoghurt and licking the lid.

"He's the lead guitarist in a band and invited both of us to go see him play tonight. Isn't that awesome?" Smiling from ear to ear with her arm wrapped around his.

It didn't surprise me that Lexi had already found something for us to do on our first night as college students. She was always the one who had a calendar full of parties and clubs to attend. I, on the other hand, didn't even know what a club was until I was eighteen. The only club I knew of looked like a wooden bat. Thank you sheltered upbringing.

"Hey, Zach, nice to meet you." I stretch out my hand to offer a handshake and he takes it with a firm grip in his callused hands.

"What's with the gloves?" he asks with a small laugh in his voice nodding down to my hand as we shook.

"Ah, she's just got bad circulation. Really bad. She's always cold." Lexi comes to my defence. I shrug and sit down trying to nonchalantly shake off Zach's remark like it didn't mean anything to me.

"Anyway, this here is Skeeter our drummer." The red head gives a little wave of his fork and continues his paradiddles.

"This is Tommy. He shreds it up on the bass, don't you Tommy?" The guy next to me pulled his earphone out from his ear with a confused look on his face.

"Wha?"

"Never mind idiot." Zach waved him away in annoyance.

"So how long has your band been together Zach?" Lexi asks looking at him with stars in her eyes, clearly already smitten.

"Uh, about 4 years now. Mason, our lead singer had the idea. We'd all met at Jim's tavern playing pool one night. Mase knocked my cue and made me sink the 8 ball. I called him a twat and he called me an ass hat. We've been friends ever since" He said laughing at the fond memory.

Guys are so weird.

"Where is this 'twat' Mason of yours?" Lexi tried hard to keep her face straight whilst saying 'twat'.

"Uhhh... Ah! Over there." He points over to the lunch line at a guy who's large muscular arms were covered in tattoos. His dark hair was shorter at the sides and a little longer on top. He was the picture perfect male model with the ego to match I'm sure.

Zach waved for him to come to our table. Mason's eyes noticed Zach and he nodded taking his tray from the line. The way he walked exuded confidence. He oozed sex appeal and I wasn't even entirely sure he was trying. He took the spare seat next to me so I shuffled over a little bit further away not really sure what to think of him just yet.

I try not to judge people at first glance since I've had it done to me many times, but the vibes I got from Mason were dangerous, stay away!

Zach introduced Lexi and explained how they met while he picked food off her tray and she did the same to his.

I couldn't understand how Lexi became so comfortable with guys straight off the bat. If I had to chalk it down to something it would definitely be the fact she grew up with a close family who scheduled out family night every Friday.

My version of 'family night' was being locked in my room being made to re-write bible versus over and over until I fell asleep. I became quite fond of my drool patch in psalms. It was my way of rebelling back then. Class A rebel eat your heart out.

I looked up from nudging my food around my tray to see Lexi and Zach staring at me. I frowned not knowing what was going on.

"Mason asked you a question." Lexi said through her teeth, smiling stiffly.

"Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about... homework." I paused then turned to look at him.

His eyes were a mesmerising sort of blue that made me think of the turquoise colour of shallow water in the tropics. I tried to ignore the knot in my stomach forming. I'm sure being in a band with those looks made him a panty dropper, guaranteed. There was no way he could ever be interested in the weird girl who wore gloves 365 days of the year and was a closed off as a nun.

"I just wanted to know your name." He grinned, revealing a tempting set of dimples. He's a man-whore for sure. Any girl with a pulse would be begging to take her to bed after seeing those.

"Quinn." I flash my teeth quickly for a fake smile and return my gaze back to my tray. I wasn't here for guys this year, I was here to work. So that's what I was going to do. No amount of sexy dimples were going to distract me, even if they were 30 cm away.

I picked up my tray and told Lexi I'm off to study for my free period and she acknowledges me with a little nod and wave with her gaze stuck to Zach.

Sitting in the library is a welcome change to all the noises and smells assaulting my senses in the bustling cafeteria.

At least here I can think.

I flip open my textbooks and start taking copious notes for what seems like forever.

"Mmmm".

What the hell was that?

I stand up and do a 180 to inspect but there was no one. Resting my hands back on the paper I hear the sound again.

"Mmmm." Along with a giggle.

Does no one respect the sanctity of the library anymore? What have these poor books done to you? Anyway, you're in the wrong section... sexual education is aisle 2. Am I a pervert for knowing that?

Trying to settle back down I take a deep breath and continue writing...

and there it is again! That's it, I have to get up and tell these horny people to shut it.

Turning the corner of the study nook I make my way to the next aisle into fiction.

"Can you guys shut the hell up? If I wanted to listen to two people making out I..." Standing with my arms crossed I finally look up and theres Mason with a girl virtually devouring his ear.

"You're disgusting." I frown and stomp back to the study nook to gather my things and leave. I didn't know whether I was angry or embarrassed... probably both to be perfectly honest.

"So you're saying you've never been with her?" I overhear the girl whine as I'm sorting my pens into their designated pockets of my pencil case.

"I've never been with her, but even if I have, why does it matter?" Mason answers smugly.

"Because, I want you all to myself." She nags.

Such a whiny voice for such a pretty girl.

"Babe, I just wanna have fun, no strings attached. Gotta live fast and die young. It was fun and all but I'm gonna have to let you go. You're getting too clingy"

Is he serious?

It sounded like he just fired her from a working position. I try not to gag while powerwalking out of the place.

It's men, no, boys like him who makes women like me have trust issues. I just hope Lexi got the decent one of the group.

On the way home Lexi gushes about Zach and how he already owns a house at 22.

"Seriously Quinnie, he's perfect in every way. He's so smart. He's taking Calculus for extra credit and even volunteers at the homeless shelter once a month. He's just, uuuuuuugh." She sighs slinking back into the seat as if she was melting.

"Woah Lex, you're driving remember?" I laugh breathlessly, a little nervous.

"I'm really happy for you girl. He sounds like your perfect match. I hope he treats you like a queen." I tell her, pleased. Suddenly my smile drops as I think of HIM.

"But that Mason though, he's something else." My teeth grind as I remember back to the library incedent.

"You like him? Oh my god Quinn he's so into you. You should totally..."

"NO!" I shout unexpectedly, startling poor Lex.

"I mean... no. He's a real piece of work Lexi. He's THAT guy I should stay away from. He's the type of guy that calls every girl 'Babe' because he can't even remember their name he's been through so many. He thinks he's incredibly hot. That he's God's gift to women and can get anyone he wants." Lexi peers out from underneath her sunglasses to see me wringing my hands together in anger.

"You should give him a chance. Zach says he's not what everyone thinks he is. He has a few issues, sure, but I've heard some good things about him. They room together so they're basically like brothers." Smiling she keeps her eyes on the road.

"You and Zach talk about everything huh? Tomorrow you'll be married and next week you'll be pregnant with twins celebrating." I laugh trying to get off the subject of Mason.

He's even invading my conversation time.

"Oh, Quinn, he's so different from all the other guys I've dated. I can't even explain it."

"Please, don't, before I hurl." I reply, pretending an impending throw up session is about to take place. Lexi punches me playfully and giggles to herself like a lovesick teenager.

I wring my fingers in my lap thinking about attending their performance tonight.

Obviously Zach will be there but that also meant Mason would be to.
