《The Bet | Pietro x Reader》Chapter Ten

The sound of the crowd in the shopping centre was loud, but it was easily blocked out. I listened to Natasha talk about a new crime tv show that she was watching. It sounded really interesting. Wanda and Pepper were looking at jewellery and sighing over how pretty and shiny the gems were.
"Anyway, enough about the show. How are you and Pietro doing?" Natasha asked.
"We're doing great," I replied. "He's so sweet. And he cares about me. A lot."
Natasha smiled.
"I'm happy for you both," she said.
"What about you?" I asked. "Do you have anyone you're interested in?"
Natasha just sighed.
"Well, I was into Steve, but he's gay. I mean, Bucky and Steve are my number one ship, so I don't really mind anymore. I'm happy by myself," she said.
I could tell it was the truth. Besides, she didn't need a boyfriend.
Natasha and I got bored of watching the other two sigh over jewels so we herded them out of the store and to a clothing store.
I ran my fingers over some of the fabrics, not really interested in anything. I waited for the other girls to finish browsing before we went to the food court. As soon as I smelled the food my stomach grumbled. A moment after, Wanda's stomach rumbled as well.
"What should we get?" Wanda asked.
"I'm craving fast food," Natasha said.
We all agreed that fast food was the way to go. I looked around the food court and noticed that a new food place had opened up.
"Have any of you guys had... Shawarma before?" I asked, squinting to see the writing.
"No, what's that?" Pepper asked.
I looked it up on my phone.
"Apparently it's kind of like Greek souvlaki," I replied.

"Let's try that," Natasha said.
We all ordered some and sat down to try it. I took a bite. It was the best thing I had ever tasted.
"Oh my god, the group needs to try this," Natasha said.
She pulled out her phone and took a photo of us all eating. I got a notification from our group chat a moment later. Natasha had sent the photo to the chat, telling everyone that they had to try it.
"I bet that Carol and Val will come today," Wanda said, taking another bite.
"Thor and Sam won't let this opportunity pass, so they'll come too, and Sam will probably bring Steve and Bucky," Natasha said. "And of course, Clint would never pass up the opportunity for good food."
"I bet Pietro and Tony would love this," Pepper said.
I got a text from Pietro. I opened up our message thread.
Are you seriously trying something yummy without me?
There were a whole bunch of angry and sad emojis after the message. I giggled aloud and showed the girls.
"Just invite him out already. We can get the gang to come," Natasha said shrugging.
I texted Pietro.
Why don't you come and try some then?
Maybe I will
I showed the girls the messages.
"He's coming, alright," Wanda said. "He just needed an excuse to come. Your invitation provided one."
After about fifteen minutes, we found that Wanda was correct. Natasha saw Clint walking through the food court with Steve, Bucky, and Sam. I was so focused on them that I didn't notice someone was behind me until they plucked my shawarma out of my hands.
"Hey!" I squawked, turning around to see Pietro holding my food.
My jaw dropped when he stuffed the last of it in his mouth.

"Don't worry, I got you another one!" Pietro said quickly, pulling one from behind his back.
"You're lucky you're cute," I said, before munching on my new shawarma.
Pietro sat next to me while the other boys sat around the table. We continued eating shawarma and more of our friends arrived. Thor brought his younger brother, Loki, who I had never met before. He just sat down and read his book, occasionally taking a bite out of his shawarma.
Everyone was talking and having a great time.
"Who found this gem?" Clint asked, holding up the rest of his food.
"That would be y/n," Natasha said.
Everyone began congratulating and thanking me. I giggled, especially when Scott told me he would have died if I had never found this place.
What made me laugh harder, though, was when Scott made his statement, Hope sighed, looked to the ceiling, and muttered, "God dammit, y/n."

Sexy Sect Babes
“One in a billion.” Jack kept repeating the mantra in his head. “One in a billion.” That was the number the Omni-Corps liked to cite whenever someone stepped onto one trans-mat pad and then simply… never stepped off the other. “Safer than a car,” he repeated as he slogged through the snow, his mining overalls doing at least a passable job of keeping out the cold as he brushed aside a tree branch. “Safer than a plane. Or a starship. Safest form of transport in the Star League.” He slammed his fist into a nearby tree, exo-empowered strength shattering it into little more than scattered bark and kindling. “Yeah, well I never heard of a car ride stranding some prick in another dimension!” He roared, his voice echoing through the seemingly endless forest around him. Then he kept marching. He’d seen the fire off in the distance. And given all the snow around, he sincerely doubted it was natural. Which left the unnatural. Which meant people. He hoped. Because even if the trans-mat had screwed up, he doubted it had dumped him too far off the central finite curve. The fact that the air was breathable and that he could recognize the trees around him as oak told him that much. And if the dimension he was in had trees native to Earth, chances are it would have animals too. Of which humans would hopefully be no exception. “Because I’ll be damned if I spend the rest of my days talking to goddamn squirrels.” No, if there were humans on this mudball, he was going to find them. One way or another.

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
