《The Bet | Pietro x Reader》Chapter Nine

I woke up on Saturday morning feeling excited. I had another date with Pietro today, except it was going to be a bit different to all our other dates. Pietro and I had talked about it and we decided to go on a double date with Pepper and Tony.
I got out of bed and did my morning routine. I stood in my closet, wondering what to wear. I eventually decided on some denim shorts and a blue, off the shoulder top. I put on some sandals and styled my hair.
I re-read the text that Pietro had sent me.
I'm taking you on a picnic, so dress warm ;)
I smiled, going up and reading our conversations. Some of the things we spoke about were boring, like 'where are we meeting?' and 'did you get the notes from math?' but it still brought butterflies to my stomach.
When Pietro arrived, I was ready to go. I wasn't supposed to bring anything, but I snuck in a bag of his favourite potato chips. Pietro drove down the streets until we arrived at the park. He took a picnic basket out of the backseat and wouldn't let me carry anything, just like a true gentleman. We reached a nice big tree that provided some shade and lay down the picnic blanket. We opened the picnic basket and set everything up, and then waited for Tony and Pepper.
They arrived after a few minutes. They had also brought a picnic basket full of food. Pepper was wearing a gorgeous lavender sundress. It brought out her eyes. We all hugged each other and then sat down, beginning to talk. We joked around and ate food. Honestly, it was one of the best times of my life. Pepper and I began talking about our futures while the boys started talking about football.

"Hey, Tony, can I talk to you for a sec?" Pietro asked, glancing at Pepper and me.
"Yeah, sure," Tony replied, standing up and walking out of hearing range from Pepper and I.
I found it slightly suspicious. What did he need to talk about with Tony that was so private? I didn't want to sound like a possessive girlfriend, but the look he gave me before he left was... scared. Not in the way that a horror movie scares someone, but as if he was afraid of losing someone.
Pietro POV
"The bet's off."
I watched Tony to see his reaction. He didn't even look surprised.
"You care about her, huh?" Tony said with a small smile on his face.
I sighed deeply, thinking about y/n.
"Yeah, I do," I replied.
"I feel the same about Pepper," Tony said. "She's something different. I guess I've been going for the wrong girls. Or maybe, she's the only one for me."
I nodded, understanding what he met. Before I'd met y/n, I didn't really care about the girls I'd dated. When I'd first met y/n, I only thought about her for the bet. But soon enough, she became a part of my life that I couldn't let go. I hated it because it left me so vulnerable, but at the same time, I loved having these feelings. I loved caring for her.
Tony and I shook hands, ending the bet. We walked back to the girls and continued eating and conversing. I felt y/n look at me a few times, but she didn't say anything.
Eventually, I started thinking about what would happen if y/n found out about the bet. It was over now, a month after we'd started dating. It wouldn't matter to her, would it? I decided to think about what it would feel like for me if y/n had a bet going on with her friends. I'd be heartbroken and furious if she'd played me like that. Although, I wasn't playing her. I hadn't been for a long time. When she was talking to Steve and I got jealous, I knew that this relationship was different. This one was supposed to last.

When the picnic was over, I drove y/n home. She gave me a kiss goodbye, smiling and saying that she'd see me soon. I drove home and entered my house. Wanda was sitting on the couch, watching some rom com that y/n would probably love.
"The bet's over," I said to Wanda.
She immediately paused the movie.
"What? Why? Did you break up with y/n? Did Tony break up with Pepper?" she gasped.
"No, no. You need to calm down. Tony and I decided to end the bet. We care about our girlfriends and we don't want them to get hurt," I explained.
Wanda smiled. She jumped up and gave me a hug.
"I'm glad you're actually feeling things for someone," she said.
I smiled, thinking about how I felt for y/n.
"Besides, I hated lying to them," Wanda sighed.
"You can't tell them," I blurted.
Wanda paused, looking at me with a confused expression.
"We haven't told them yet," I confessed.
Wanda looked at me seriously.
"You can't just not tell them!" she exclaimed.
"I can't tell y/n! She'll be crushed!" I yelled.
Tears threatened to fall from my eyes. I turned around and wiped my eyes, hoping Wanda wouldn't see, but she sees everything about me. She wrapped her arms around me.
"You really care about her, don't you?" she asked quietly.
All I could do was nod.
"Okay. I'll tell everyone else and make sure they don't tell anyone," she assured me.
I nodded, wondering if the feeling of guilt for not telling y/n would go away, or if I'd have to tell her eventually.

Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source.
