《if only we were in love | [hky!!]》kenma kozume

today, the clouds were kind enough to unite and prevent sun from shining in all its blazing glory.

now, when that happened, there were two people in this world: those whose mood dampened, and those whose mood lifted. you happened to be one of the people whose mood had darkened. it's a psychological thing, don't worry.

you sighed— an empty, emotionless sigh— as you leaned against the cold window of the car, the light rain beginning to pitter patter, making the window even colder. but you didn't mind, you were nearly numb to it. what bothered you was the sudden worry of the rain: you despised getting your socks wet. you were sure that sneaky puddles would be waiting to be stepped on in the school campus, leaving you no choice but to be extremely cautious— which, frankly speaking, took a great amount of effort, especially for someone like you. this put a light scowl on your face.

“it's surprisingly rainy, for the happiest day of the year,” your father quipped, and you subconsciously removed the ugly expression from your face.

my funeral? you remarked in return, but only in your head. goodness, all hell would break loose if your parents discovered that you made jokes like that.

“what day is it today?” you said tiredly, despite your thoughts. and although the most energy-consuming task you had done so far was waking up early (yes, even that was harder to do than dress up for school), you already felt lethargic. could it have been the hours of homework or the hours of gaming? you couldn't tell, and that was most certainly irrelevant right now.

you saw your father intertwine his fingers with your mother, making you smile slightly, your heart easing and your shoulders relaxing.

“it's valentine's day.”

and your body tensed again. truth be told you had nothing against the holiday, but it was rather because all the people you disliked would be happy and hopeful. and you hardly get any students confessing their 'unending' love to you. but that's okay, because rejecting innocent, lovestruck people was quite a challenge.

but you tensed for a different reason: this time, you found someone to capture your heart. you took a romantic interest in someone!

“oh.” was all you could say, trying to play it cool. “yeah, uh, thanks for dropping me off. see you later!”

some time later nekoma high was shining unabashedly in front of you; it was your cue to head to school. you grabbed the umbrella your mother offered to you then opened it, before stepping out of the vehicle, waving a farewell to your parents.

i pray they won't disturb the neighbours today.

as you touched the ground, your gaze trailed to an oncoming student, looking up to his golden eyes. you waved kindly, a sweet smile gracing your features.

“good morning, kenma.”

he seemed to stop in his tracks, his eyes slightly wider than usual as he looked up from his video game.

“oh, hello. did you just get here?”

you nodded, then turning to the taller boy standing next to the blonde.

“good morning, kuroo. you don't have practice?”

the male shook his head, “coach nekomata's a romanticist, apparently, so he gave us the opportunity to confess to our babes.”

you paused, smiling wider. come on, that was funny. “i see.”

while waiting for class you decided to sit with them in the cafeteria.

“hey, do you have someone to confess to today?” kuroo chirped, wiggling his eyebrows.

“me?” kenma replied, focused on the game.

“both of you, duh.”

“kuroo, i'm not good enough to be a boyfriend to anyone.” kenma shot back, almost defensively. he was flat and blunt with his response, clearly not as interested as you were.

your cheeks heated up; you covered your rosy cheeks with your hand, while answering a muffled “yes.” this left the two boys shocked, to the point that kenma paused his game just to get into the conversation.

“ohooo? who is it, tell us!” kuroo nudged, but you refused to say another word.

the day went by with some pop quizzes, regular lectures, and excited gossip of who confessed to who. time came when the last schoolbell rang, dismissing all the students after cleanup.

just as you stepped out of class, you were greeted with the enticing scent of your favourite food, you impulsively followed the smell, until eventually you found yourself in the garden.

that's a very strong scent of food.

your heart stopped at the sight of kuroo.

“greek gods, you scared me!” you exclaimed, but then your eyes trailed down to the box of food held preciously in his bony hands.

“uh... uhm, i—i'm... i... i like you.”

your ears twitched and your heart skipped approximately five beats. a dark red blush made its way unto your cheeks, the shade darkening with every passing second.

how on earth does he have the balls to say those words?!

"come again?" you choked, wanting to be assured you heard that right. you even slapped your face repeatedly just to prove to yourself that you weren't going insane.

kuroo sighed exaggeratedly, but a rare, shy smile was blessing his features.

“i said...” he cleared his throat. “... i like you, and i would like to be your boyfriend.”

silence. awkward silence.

then, a dorky, but beautifully big smile.

not from kuroo, oh no—

“YES!”

you jumped, wrapping your arms around his sturdy waist, embracing him completely. the black-haired male nearly dropped the food at the sudden attack as he fell to the grassy ground, dragging you along with him.

“oops,” you laughed, making him laugh.

“happy valentine's day, love.” kuroo pinched your cheek.

that's supposed to be my line.

kenma glanced from the window in the hallway, a deep look of regret and hurt in his eyes.

no, it was never meant to be my line. he thought, tears falling down from his dull eyes.

he hated how he watched the one he loved love someone else.

he hated how he didn't do anything about it.

no... i couldn't do anything about it.

it's true, i'm not good enough.
