I turned the phone off and set it down on the table, deciding to focus on the drink and studying for the test. Taking a sip of the warm drink, I set it back down and grabbed the flashcards and started to quiz myself.
"Excuse me, sorry to bother you..." A deep voice interrupted my though process, making me look up at him.
"If you were wondering about the empty seat across from me, it's empty." I quickly replied to what he was about to ask me and shot him a genuine smile. "I'm Y/N, by the way."
"Kerby. It's nice to meet you, Y/N." He smiled back at me and sat down in the empty seat across from me. "Thank you very much for offering the empty spot. This place is very packed..."
"It's my pleasure, Kerby," I giggled quietly and shook my head, "it's exam season in Uni and everybody's coming here to have some study time. Which is also the reason why I'm here. That, and to get some alone time from my ex-boyfriend."
"Oh," his face dropped into a frown and shook his head, "I'm so sorry about that. He didn't cheat on you or anything, did he?"
A forced smile appeared on my face and I nodded my head, "that's what he did and which is why we've broken up now."
"I-I didn't mean to bring back any negative feelings, I truly apologize for that, Y/N." He took a sip of his drink before setting the cup back on the table. "Would you like for me to help you out with your studying?"
A chuckle came out of mouth, thinking about what he said, before nodding my head. "Sure, I'd love to have a study partner."

"Oh, crap...I have to get to practice in 10 minutes." Kerby groaned and got up from his seat before quickly grabbing a white napkin and borrowed a pen that was lying on the counter. "But, is it okay if I got your number?"
"Of course it is," I shook my head playfully and gently snatched the pen from his hand. He handed the napkin over to me for my number. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Rychel." I winked at him and he looked at me in a surprised way.
"So, you do know me, after all?"
"Of course I do. I'm a Maple Leafs fan after all. Good luck with your season and I'll text you later."
"And I'm looking forward to it, Y/N."

To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author.
