《Book reviews *Requests Closed*》'My little El' by Mini_Peppermint'

'My little El' is the story of Eleanor, a rich girl struggling to survive, and Lucas; her neighbour, her bully, and a badboy.

That's all I can say about it, really. The moment I see the word 'badboy', I start squinting in suspicion. Call it prejudiced, but Wattpad and badboys… simply is a risky combination. And boy (pun intended), this story is risky.

First of all, while the events unfolding in the story seem to be decently-crafted, I have no idea where this story is going. What is it supposed to be? A love story? Crime drama? Social commentary? I have no clue. While it's great to combine aspects of and mix certain genres together, I do believe a story should have an idea of what it's trying to be. With this story, I mostly feel like we're walking around aimlessly. So, well-crafted or not, I'd like to urge the author to give some thought to this question: 'what is my goal as I write this and how can I convince my readers I know what I'm doing?'

Mind you, you don't actually need to know what you're doing. The readers just need to think you do. That's a secret of the trade, y'all.

Moving on to the characters. They're interesting enough; I like how Lukas has more depth than originally thought, and the plot twist with René was interesting. However, when it comes to character relationships, I do need to say this:

Look. I get it. Wattpad loves badboys, and it especially loves getting them wrong. A badboy, in Wattpad's vocabulary, seems to be 'toxic creepy psycho with a hidden soft side'. That… is not necessarily what a badboy is. Wattpad likes to romanticize these toxic creepy psychos it loves so much, and Lukas, so far, meets the criteria of being one. Author, unless you're deliberately trying to portray what will culminate in a unhealthy relationship, I'll ask you to read over what you wrote and examine it carefully. Because the two characters I'm seeing in this story have a long, long fucking way to go before they can even have something resembling a normal relationship, and even then, the bad start they had seems so immense I have trouble believing anything good can ever come out of it.

On to the GPS. While choice of words and spelling are very good, the sentences and their structures are wobbly as hell and the interpunction isn't to write home about either. A shame, because the narrative voice sounds very interesting, and I really liked some metaphors I saw. It's a shame those are weakened by the wonky sentences, which makes the story harder to read and more difficult to understand. I'd recommend some editing.

I think this has potential if the flaws are straightened out. For now, I'm going to stick with this rating: 6.5
