The first thing I'd like to mention is that when you go through the tags on this book, one of them says 'asperges'. What the actual fuck. All I know is that that means 'asparagus' in my native language and I haven't seen that word anywhere in the book. What are asperges in this context? What even? The only logical explanation I can come up with is that it was supposed to be aspergers.
Anyway, that gave me a good laugh, so I thought that might as well be my intro for this review. Now that we've had the chance to laugh at asparagus, I can finally introduce the book: The Wolf of the Wilds.
The story is about Helena, a rogue werewolf with a dark past who doesn't quite get along with the packs around her own territory. One day, the Montis pack from the North arrives. Her mate is one of the Montis wolves and Helena decides to travel north with him, to start a new life. However, her new existence with the Montis is threatened by enemies both new and old.
The story's plot is original and well-executed. I can see a lot of effort was put into the (fantasy) worldbuilding. I like how we gather new information about the world and societies in it throughout the story. Well done!
The characters and their interactions feel refreshing; the story does a good job avoiding clichés. For example, Helena and her mate Adrian dont immediately dive in some kind of hot relationship, but they start off small and us readers can see them slowly falling in love and growing towards each other, which is how it works. Helena also befriends Iona, 'the pack slut', which also doesn't happen frequently.
Apart from some minor typos here and there, the GPS is fine. Fix them for an even better experience, but I wouldn't call it an absolute necessity.
Lastly, kudos to the map and character designs in the extra content chapter! It's a very nice addition and it shows the effort put in the story.
But hey, author? Do hit me up about that tag, I'm highkey curious.
